We've just bought this from salvage auction for a basis for a race car to run in the Honda Vtec Challenge.

Just wondering if it was owned by a forum member.

Was also on a private plate a few years ago - P4NDE

Will start a build thread soon.

Was a member on here who owned a couple, a '91 and a 99. Member Pande: http://www.nsxcb.co.uk/member.php?111-Pande
Which one do you have, the '91 or '99?

Welcome to the forum. Will look forward to your thread.

Welcome.

I presume that's the '99. IIRC, Pande used to look after it very well.

Still, it doesn't look three bad, presuming it can be tugged straight at the front.

Good luck with the challenge - EK4/9s & DC2s are a tad cheaper to run, so it will be!

Thanks guys, useful to know. Yes its a 99 NA2

I'm actually minded to replace all the panels with a widebody kit - and sale of the good panels would at least go towards the kit cost. I dont really want to be shelling out for OEM panels if it gets pranged on the track.

I know its going to be expensive - everything is essentially 5-10x the price of DC2 stuff!!! but it will be a demo/show car as well as a race car for R-Motion. We also actually run the Vtec Challenge so hoping this might generate some more interest in the series.

Was going to suggest that. I think that would be a good move. Maybe get in touch with Rob Fenn, they've been there & done that and should be able to give you some sound advice.

Yes I'll get in touch with Rob. He was planning on racing in the Nippon Challenge when I raced my EK there a few years back but I think he rightly had higher aspirations than the NC!

Well the build has started in ernest this week. First stage was to strip the car pretty much bare. First phase of this is done - all the interior electrics & loom, interior and most of the underbonnet gubbins.

Its been fascinating job as you get to see how they put it together. What is surprising though is all the effort they went into building a lightweight chassis and body only to then fill it with very heavy stuff! But then I suppose thats what the NSX-R was about.

For example, we weighed a few items that seemed a bit excessive.

Interior/front harness inlcuding all control boxes, ECU etc 25kgs
Steering column 11kgs
Twin aircon rads with cowling and fans 8kgs
Front bumper inc lights 12kgs

Anyway some pics:

Engine out next week then the rest of the wiring, pipework etc.

This should be interesting to watch as this progresses.

Can I ask a boring question and ask what jack stands you are using?

Replace the front lights for O2 plus and you'll save lots more.

Will be replacing front lights for fixed but probably JGTC as 02 conversions are a tad on the expensive side!

Engine out, pretty straightforward really.

I know I said I wouldnt, but I've just ordered an FXMD widebody kit from the states

I bought some parts off this guy and he was great, honest, fast and parts as described, highly recommended.

Thanks for the pics and write up - this will be interesting to follow.

It would also be good if you could list parts used and links to sources or prices if you are thinking about re-distribution (might need vendor status for that though). There will be a lot of parts going in to this car which peoplle would be interested in I think.

A couple fo questions:
- Is that a 3.2 engine? Think the red sides mean it is
- What was the base car?
- What are your thoughts for brakes?

Thanks,

Luke

Yes I'll keep you all updated as to which parts are used. So far my only purchase has been an FXMD TA-1 widebody kit and some suspension components from Science of Speed. here is a pic of the kit installed:

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d180/drmikey/Race%20NSX/IMG_5376.jpg

Yes its a 3.2 Engine - car was an NA2 prefacelift (hence the 3.2).
Brakes, I have some AP4 pots that I'll be using or I may pinch the Alcons on my EG race car.

Some progress on the build at last!

Drawings for the steering rack finally completed and signed off.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d180/drmikey/Race NSX/C9961082501.jpg

Sound deadening finally removed:

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d180/drmikey/Race NSX/DSC00095.jpg

And started removing the underseal from the inner arches.

What sort of weight was in the sound deadening, Mike?

drmikey
14-12-2011, 07:07 PM
Probably about 10-12kgs and possibly the most stuborn sound deadening I've ever experienced. Had to get the dry ice out!

That's a nice choice of bodykit. The best looking wide body.

What are you doing with the steering rack exactly? Would be nice to know.

Just having a new quick rack made. Plus the EPS isnt the best system for racing (in terms of feel and reliability).

Its a manual rack (2.5 turns lock to lock) but I'm fitting a powered column.

drmikey
15-12-2011, 04:17 AM
Only removing underseal from the arches (leaving the floor pan underside). Mainly doing it for neatness and looks and easier to clean.

As its a race car (with occasional road) it will never see any salt!

drmikey
11-01-2012, 06:41 PM
Steering rack appeared from Titan this week. 2.5 turns lock to lock and only 4kgs compared to 14.5kgs of the original EPS rack! Custom steering rack from Titan appeared last week. 2.5 turns lock to lock and 4kgs compared to 3.2 turns and 14.5kgs of the original EPS rack!

Nice!

What ratio is the new rack and do you get the same "throw"? I'm wondering if it would work in a road car or if the turning circle would be too compromised

New rack is 2.5 L2L and the OEM is 3.2 so its a much quicker rack but the travel is identical so same turning circle. But obviously the steering will be heavier - Im fitting a powered column for assistance.

I've been very slack updating this build thread (for more up to date info check out our facebook page -

http://www.facebook.com/pages/R-Motion/129954317045809

But there has been some progress.

- The chassis has been completely stripped and most of the underside soda blasted (more gentle than sand/grit/oxide blasting)
- Bodykit has arrived from Ken at FXMD
- Big box of parts arrived from Chris at SOS
- Lister air jacks arrived

Will get some pics up for parts ASAP but a couple of the soda blasting process:

Is it possible to offset the 'weight' by adding more assistance in the column unit? ...

Bonnet looks well made, nice job.
What made you go that route instead of buying a ready made lighter weight CF bonnet?

drmikey
17-06-2012, 05:20 PM
Yes the amount of assistance on the column can be adjusted from min to max. You could be fancy and make a controller whereby amount of assistance if proportional to speed.

drmikey
17-06-2012, 05:22 PM
To be honest I'm not sure a CF bonnet would be lighter anyway. The OEM bonnet is very light as it is and most CF bonnets are just a superficial skin of carbon on top of much hearvier GRP

Check the issue of Octane (2 months ago?) where Harry Metcalf had electrical assistance added to his Countach. He took it to the suppliers factory in Holland but they have agents over here.

It'd be nothing like as sophisticated as the standard NSX one but it would solve the unfashionably slow steering of all NSX's.

I know it's been ages since you have disassembled the car but you wouldn't still have your headlight washer nozzles and their clips and the fitting attached to them under the front bumper?
I was going to install my washer kit and seems i've lost/misplaced my nozzles and ...

If so, would you be willing to part with them and I can send you my new ones when I find them or pay for yours and the cost of posting them to me.

They've certainly been a long time coming and a pain in the ars# but worth the trouble over here, I hope. Most over here don't know what "those black things" are.

I've seen the ones on e-bay but more importantly I need the retainer clips and the little adapter hose/fitting they're not offering.

I have the bits, I thought they were in the box with the reservoir. I must have left them in my big box of NSX bits in my storage locker up in Atlanta, Georgia and not worth the 9 hr drive each way to retrieve them right now.

Thanks for the interest and reminding me what an idiot I am for dealing with them. LOL

I'll be making an offer straight away as i've bought other bits for my Prelude 4WS from them and they're good lads to deal with.
Maybe they'll have the l/s laying about by now.

No worries Paul.

Some tactical masking and then 2 hours in the aluminium oxide blast cabinet and then an hour in the glass bead cabinet!

Some more progress, along with a slight change in direction (due to various reasons).

No longer a race car, but a Road/Track spec based on a "GT3 RS" philosophy (although it will still be pretty hardcore)

Cage is (obviously) staying but retaining the glass, fans, and possibly replacing some comfort parts like carpet and sound deadening.

I've also swapped out my custom race steering rack for an OEM manual one (still with power assisted column). Engine is still to be decided.

Air jacks will stay (so handy).

Anyway some pics of latest work.

A little more progress. Whilst there hasnt been any developments on the bodykit (bodyshops eh!) I have started reinstalling the loom and fitting the custom steering setup.

Since its more road/track orientated build now, I decided to reuse the existing loom with some stripping of unwanted wiring and a good tidy. This will just run the cars ancillaries. I will have a standlone loom and system for the engine.

Been a lot of trial and error to fit the EPAS system to the car using a manual NSX rack I had with the EPAS system. But in the end using a combination of the GM unit, NSX and EP3 parts it fits perfectly and the UJ movement is perfect. I have even managed to get the existing steering wheel surround to fit

The EPAS unit with modified UJ and column

Alignment of the column is perfect. I hope you like my (ahem) Type R pedals

Road, and nearly OEM - Ive given up trying to make NSXs faster and handle better, they were just great out of the factory!

Its a complicated one. I have a clean black 93 shell and a 93 manual coupe with 25k on the clock which had some damage. So Im going to make a good one out of the two!
