Door mirror

I decided on one final trip in the car before bedding it down for the winter since it was a glorious day - the salt and grit on the roads around Aberdeen discourages any form of winter driving. I parked in a car park, folded in the mirrors as usual and came back to find that the idiot who had parked beside me had dislodged the driver side mirror by carelessly pushing past it.

It is still attached but is loose and will not lock into position either parked (folded) or driving. I drove home with it sitting there safe enough but obviously it is not secure. Is there a simple fix? Any suggestions most welcome.

You will need to remove the mirror glass first to see if there is any breakage in there or spring mount is dislodged in some way, the glass is removed by screwing out a small Philips screw that's recessed in the mirror housing, visible from under the mirror, this can be a bugger to get out and fragile.

Unfortunately if the spring mount is broke, there is no separate singe item part that you can buy from the dealer, it comes as part of the mirror housing and the base that bots to the door. If the housing had to be replaced, you will need to remove the door card to access the bolts.

But first try to remove the glass, if the screw is ceased up and your afraid to damage something, try adjusting your mirror glass as far out as it goes and shining a light in behind to see if UK can see anything damaged/cracked etc.

Yip! Ths would be the next option or eBay if in fact the mirror spring mount is damaged, and a DIY fix doesn't work.

Thanks Sudesh. I'll have a look when I am next back which will be a couple of weeks. Until then I will remain optimistic that it has just come dislodged!

Spring is here - almost anyway for northern Scotland - so I have finally got round to working on this mirror. So far, not good. I cannot get the small Phillips screw underneath the mirror housing to budge and I am scared of stripping it. I pushed the mirror glass back as far as possible and had a good look inside (to the extent that was possible). The spring is clearly visible and there appears (?) to be no sign of obvious damage. On the other hand the whole housing freely moves through almost 360 deg so something is obviously not right.

Any suggestions??

Although Sudesh has already posted the link to some of the photos on Prime and also following photos were taken several years ago and don’t show the exact parts but hope these will assist you in understanding the structure.

The screw holding the mirror may have the red thread locking applied from the factory so you may need extra force to loosen it.

Before removing the mirror, I normally tilt it as much as possible to get extra room behind it and then apply penetrating oil around the area.

I don’t know how the other side of the spring sits but I just hope it’s something simple and not ending up replacing the whole unit.

The spring washer at the top of the spring may have been knocked off by the force allowing the mirror housing to rotate freely???


Any way, you need to remove the mirror to investigate it further.
