Oil filter!

Well chaps.

Planned to do my yearly (1000 mile!) oil change on Sunday only to find that I've run out of oil filters!

What's the story with the oil filter numbers?

Is the longer 15400-PL2-004 filter still available or has it been superseded and replaced by the short ass filter long ago?

Only short ass ones available now, although a chap on Prime is selling a tall boy for $35 if you are interested...

I was doing a pallet order from Mahle filters and decided to get a few OC256 filters, which are a direct cross reference to the 15400-PL2-004 filter:

not being funny, but why not just buy the revised (smaller) honda part?!

i have been using them with ZERO issues and i presume I put my car to more use (and extreme) than you mate! ;),

surely if you change your oil regularly then why go through the hassle of finding alternative parts or what is the problem with this filter?

if good enuff for father honda ... good enuff for me and personally would not user any other filter bar what honda provides for the NSX anyway.

im sure someone will state there is a better filter out there and give some reason as to why but if u change your filter regularly (which i do) i dont see what the issue is

No harm in asking the question.

The 004 is the filter that was designed to be used on the NSX and provides better flow due to it's size and better filtration due to the larger surface area of the internal filter cartridge material.

The shorter filter obviously meets certain criteria and I'd be surprised to see any short term problems with using them.

You would have to be very naive to think they shortened the design and superseded the part number with only the performance of the filter in mind however.

A filter that is cheaper to manufacture and just about meets certain specs will keep the accountants happy but it's ultimately a compromise.

The blue Honda filters are made in the US by a company called Filtech.

Not a bad brand by any means but not a brand as synonymous with engineering brilliance like Mahle, which is why I posted.

Fair point mate and you know more than me most likely re this stuff ... But say something did happen to car that was deemed failure on an OEM part at least you have a 'genuine' part so at least HUK would have to acknowledge it - all documentation states the use/guarantee of genuine parts.

If it was non Honda they would simply tell you to slide on regardless if its a superior part. Likely chances they would do whatever to get out of it anyways but only parts I would use are OEM on engine type stuff unless it was known to be better buying bits from other suppliers such as SOS or Dali or something.
