View Full Version : Air con low pressure valve

Guys,

Trying to recharge my aircon gas as there seems to be a leak somewhere as it needs recharging annually.
The gas has been converted to the R134a stuff 2 years ago.
The aircon gas re-charge cannister is available from Halfords with an adapter pipe with a gauge attached.

http://washford.scene7.com/is/image/Washford/344686?$PDP_MAIN$

The screw-on adapter size doesn't fit my 1991 and 1993 NSX but seems to fit the 1999 NSX.

Can anybody give me the size of an adapter that will screw onto the 1991-1993 NSX low pressure aircon valve and fit onto the Halfords adapter.

If it is available to buy on ebay/amazon etc...please post a link.

Thanks

There a place near me that they can order the adaptor for you.

The R134a connector is not a screw type, it's a quick release style. If your system was upgraded to the new gas it should have the quick release adaptor....or have I misunderstood you? I would think most automotive A/C companies can help with the connector but make sure the system does not have R12 still in it as the gasses are not compatible.
Surely it's a good time to get the leak fixed to save your compressor exploding one day?

I agree with NSXGB.
Have to recharge every year is too excessive.
If you know where it is leaking from and if it is from the evaporator itself or if your compressor is getting close to the end of its life, you need to balance whether it is better to carry on re-charging it every year or fix the issue once for all.

DIY re-charge is only good if you need to do it once in many-many years otherwise, it will hide the issue for a short period and cause further issues.
You could be letting the moisture entering the system causing the internal pipe wall to corrode and you may see brownish debris through the check window of the drier/receiver unit.

For your reference, if the A/C is used regularly and no conversion/retro fitting was carried out in the past, then the O-rings, compressor and other parts are designed for the R134a gas and thus, it should last for many years.
For example, over the last 19 years, I only re-gassed my A/C system just once.

You are very likely loosing the compressor oil slowly but steadily as well and eventually, it will fail.
Complete failure of compressor or A/C pipes on any cars would result in huge cost.

On our NSX, if you are loosing the gas from the fitting at the condenser, then you are very likely to be forced to replace the condenser unit itself because the leakage is normally caused by the corrosion at the fitting and just replacing the o-ring won’t stop the leakage.

Best to have it looked at by the A/C specialist.
Should not cost too much even you decide to go just for the re-gas.

Thanks Kaz,

I have taken the car to the local Air-con auto shop.

They have diagnosed a leakage using UV dye, to be dripping from under the passenger side from below the dash-level and flowing following the drainage pipe.

I believe this is where the heater/evaporator resides.....is this the condenser??..or is the condenser the 2 radiator-like thingy at the corner of the front.
The air-con guys suspect there is a leak where the ?evaporator core radiator is located.

Any advice on the next step.

Kaz can you help?..Please PM me or call me.

yup, sounds like it's the evaporator that is hidden in the heater box! unfortunately it's pretty much the first thing that is bolted into the car when the interior is fitted.

see http://www.nsxcb.co.uk/showthread.php?9681-my-aircon-evaporator-overhaul&highlight= for the basic lowdown!

oh, a quick mention that the LHD and RHD units are different, so no buying replacement aftermarket reasonably priced stuff from USA ebay!

Another member posted that they had an evaporator core made up to match at a fraction of HUK prices if you have a quick search. It was possibly Duncan but not sure.

Hi, Silver Surfer.
I’m on the same boat as you.

Mine started to leak last year but so far, it seems to be really slow leakage as I don’t even see a tiny bubble through the check window at the receiver.

It’s a dashboard off job and you need to drain the coolant low enough so while it’s not that difficult, it’s time consuming task.

I also started to experience the hair line crack at my defrost panel earlier this year so I’ll replace it at the same time.

If your SRS unit is not checked for the capacitor leakage, then it's a good time to do so as well.

Hope you can get the copy of NSX evaporator.
If the leakage is towards the outer frame, you could try welding it but there is no guarantee that new leakage won’t start from another place.

If you ran out of all other options, please let me know.
I can get new one from Japan although at the moment, many NSX owners in Japan are doing the A/C refresh for similar reasons and may not in stock.
Please make sure to replace the receiver at the same time as you are going to break the sealed system.
New OEM evaporator comes with the new expansion valve which is another part that can fail on any A/C system but mainly caused by other reasons.

Thanks Kaz

Can you PM or email me the cost of a new evaporator and receiver for you to bring back from Japan for me.
