Oil pan baffle

Just wondering if anyone has one as I'll soon be replacing the oil pan gasket and would be daft not to weld in a baffle if I had one!

The question is, do you really need it?

It all depends on the shape of the circuit, chassis setup especially the tyre being used, etc.
If you are attacking the long mid-high G corner, I can see the benefit.
For example, while I was working in US, I saw many circuits had such corners.

Please note that the oil pump will push out 68L at 6,000rpm and you only have 5.0L of oil capacity so you can easily imagine how quickly you can empty the oil pan at that flow rate.
The most important thing is to quickly get the oil back at the meshed strainer at the oil pan.

Without careful design and simulation, it would be hard to develop ideal baffle plate.
Some of the aftermarket design out there may have negative effect depending on the shape of the circuit.
Because of this, it would be better to design different shape/capacity oil pan or change the sump method.

In Japan, due to lots of mountains, most of the circuit is twisty narrow shape so most of the corners are short distance even at high G.
Therefore, it is recommended not to use the baffle plate but add extra oil with oil catch tank if you have black valve cover design.

In fact, there were several reports of engine damage because of aftermarket baffle plate installed on OEM oil pan in Japan so some of the NSX specialists will replace the oil pan back to OEM one if there is an aftermarket baffle plate already welded to the existing one.
The common cause of issue was that the aftermarket baffle plate didn't allow the oil to drop down to the base of oil pan quickly enough.


I have very limited experience on the UK local circuits but I would be surprised if you can generate enough G for extended period that may require some sort of design change in the oil pan area even using the track day tyres.

Recently, there was a rare ARC oil pan for sale on prime. Not sure if it really solves all problems. Too bad it's out of production.

RFY products look very nice... but i don't know if this oil pan would worth it or not...
