Hi guys
Got a 91 NSX auto with following issues:
EPS not functioning properly. Turns left and right Ok, very stiff, you turn it one way and must manually bring it back to middle otherwise stays in that position.
Car was sitting around for a long time and hasn't been driven hard for a while. Used the manual transmission mode and when I took to 7k revs, the water pipe cracked! So will need to replace this, any idea why it would randomly go?
Power in auto seems to be lagging, but on manual mode is a lot quicker. Any kickback issue symptoms I can look out for?
The car needs some TLC, taking it back to basics for a restoration. Any advice on maintenance to do? Have done a service recently.
Any specialists near Cambridge at all?

Cars do not like sitting around, not being used...
Looks like a little read of Kaz's blog would be in order for you, lots of info there.
Are there any error codes for the steering or other issues - will be worth checking any stored codes out. I see you've had issues since 2011, were these fixed or has the car been off the road all this time?
Would go for a total coolant hose refresh by the sounds of it, all fluids, filters (fuel too), throttle body clean, etc...
How are the tyres, guessing they will be past their best too? Your steering issue sounds like the tyres need some air, check the basics first....

None that I know of (and I've been looking for someone local to trust for a year!) :(

These aren't in Cambridge but are only 1 hours drive away. Just off Jcn 30/31 of the M25. IIRC they look after "batmans" NSX

Here is the story:
The car has been sitting around for many years and in 2011 made an initial contact on this forum, but to be honest, didn't progress any further.
3 years on, the car is up and running (but not running well), currently going through the above issues mentioned.
On D auto mode, don't really feel much kickback and as the gears switch at fairly low revs, doesn't really kick in much. On manual mode, there is a lot more umph to give, and i thought i will really test it as i wanted to check its capability and was pleased the response was a lot better. Unfortunately on 3rd gear when i took it up as much as 7k revs, the water pipe sitting under the header tank cracked open and cooland spilled everywhere.
We are now replacing that one pipe to get it running again, but i appreciate it needs more than just a quick fix.
PARTS - Where is the best priced place to get decent parts either OEM or decent aftermarket for this car?
MAINTENANCE - I have come across Plans Motorsport in Surrey, any comments on them?
To be honest, the car has had a service etc. but it needs more than just a service to rectify the issues we are experiencing.
Have come back to this forum after a while now, so will start spending more time researching and looking through Kaz' blogs which look really helpful. If anyone local would like to meet up, happy to meet and discuss and have a chat about these cars!
Cheers guys!

Tyres looked like they have air in, but will check out again today. How is best to check for these 'codes'?? Car was off road since 2011 but even back then it wasn't running on road. Where would you recommend to go for parts?

Would be very happy to, but you'll have to wait. I'm off to Japan for a couple of weeks on Monday and am currently running around in a last-minute rush to do the necessary stuff. :)
I'll PM you when I'm back.

Kaz's blog has info regarding the error codes, unfortunately they will have been deleted if the battery has been disconnected (unless you have had it on a trickle charger?) & you will need to drive the car to re-create the codes...
Do you know anyone going to the USA in the near future? That's about the best place to get spares at a decent price. Failing that Science of Speed in the USA will ship parts to the UK (most Acura dealers wont).

Hi, Shipz.
Since you seem to have been away from this site for a while, may I suggest you to spend some time reading the common technical items on our NSX through the following links?
These are located in the 'sticky' section of the 'Technical' forum.
http://www.nsxcb.co.uk/showthread.php?8732-NSX-Technical-and-Service-Information-Index
http://www.nsxcb.co.uk/showthread.php?9724-NSX-Technical-and-Service-Information-Index-02
The 1st link includes how to read the error code but again, you can find the specific topic in the same 'sticky' section above.

Looks like at least some sort of basic services were done in the past but from what you wrote, you really need fair amount of services before driving it on the road.
For example, the coolant hoses will burst eventually including the radiator and header tank and it’s not a matter of if but when.
They are made from EPDM so heat, UV ray and ageing are the biggest factors for the failure.
Most of the time, it will burst at the two short hoses at the oil cooler, the big one under the header tank (the one that failed on your NSX) and the crank shaped big one under the centre floor.
For the parts, if they are not huge item like body panels or not in urgent, then regularly, I’m placing orders to Japan so I can include yours as well.
As I don’t run parts business, you just pay what I paid and we can share the delivery charge and fee to UK Customs and ParcelForce with other owners.
You can also contact Vtecdirect, AS Motorsport (both are in the vendor section of this site), SoS, etc for the OEM parts.
I don’t have any experiences using the company called Dali in US but there has been mixed feedback on here as well as on NSX Prime.
It seems that the ownership has changed but kept the same company name so the previous feedback may not be the same under the new management.
As for any internet based deals, please do your home work to protect yourself.
For aftermarket parts, there are lots of options.
For high quality carbon parts, you can contact our member Sudesh and the vendor Procar Specials.
For the service, I can take a look at your NSX if it can be driven but you will be in the long queue and I’m not in Cambridge but in Bucks so may not meet your requirements.
For the detail, please visit the 'Blog' section of this site.

We think we have resolved the power steering issue. When the steering rack was changed, one of the bolts was tightened too much, this bolt controls the stiffness of the steering, any idea what the ideal torque is supposed to be set at?

Your best bet is to download or browse the online manual which is available on NSX Prime, Dali Racing, etc. Bear in mind it will be for LHD car but should answer any of your questions on settings, specs and capacaties...

Not sure we are talking about the same thing because while replacing the steering rack, there is no need to touch this specific bolt but there is one that will adjust the pre-load.
As NSXGB mentioned, you can find how to adjust it through the Workshop manual.
Again, you can find the link to it through my NSX Technical and Service Information Index 02 that I mentioned in the above post #11.
Please note that the adjustment is different between manual and EPS rack.
Also, the spec in the Workshop manual is based on the new rack.
With the old grease inside the gbox and wear on the rack, I'm afraid you need to find the best setting with your feeling on the used rack.
Ideally, you want to open up the gbox, clean and use fresh grease although you need special assistance for EPS one as there is no written manual for it.
Best to send your EPS rack to Japan or US for this.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-pzFT1dG6igw/U3nrJllVDkI/AAAAAAAAQrI/wfQESU52RYQ/s800/EPSrust.jpg
However, if you felt excessive friction on EPS rack, please check the state of the rubber boot that is covering the rack end immediately.
Most of the time, the rotor, ball shaft, etc were heavily corroded and if it gets worse, you could end up with dangerous situation where the rack can get locked/seized and unable to steer the car. This one in the photo was close to that state as it had too much water through the damaged rubber boot.
(Photo by Mr Toyoizumi at KSP Engineering, Japan)
Lift up the front of the car and turn the IG key into ACC to prevent the steering from locking.
Without starting the engine and keeping the IG key in ACC (no lights on the dash), steer the wheel several times left and right.
If your EPS rack is fine, you should hear only the faint, smooth, steady hamming like sound with consistent smooth feeling through the steering wheel.
If you hear inconsistent noise or changes in steer feeling, you have problem.
Also, it is quite popular to have small rattle on EPS rack when you grab on the left side tierod (on the RHD model) and applying up/down/left/right force.
This is caused by the metal bush wear inside the EPS rack and I’m afraid it can only be repaired by sending the rack to Japan or US.
This rattle at the metal bush is not related to your issue though.
