I realise that there are a lot of people on the forum who don't post very often, but here is one we can all good involved in.
There is a lot of talk about the prices going up, but how much of that is asking price and how much is sale price.
Fortunately on the NSX there isn't much to influence price. Age and mileage basically. So how about we see where prices are really going. Nothing to be shy about, you all bought one, so join in!!

Purchase date Year Model Mileage Price paid comments
May 2014 2000 NA2 35000 £40k 2 year Kaz history, bodywork being restored (swirls and paint chips). Red, black leather

Condition, then originality, then age and finally mileage. Lots to be shy about, when I sell mine sometime I'll be looking to prove I bought at the bottom and made a few bob! Yours looks on the money, saw it on its maiden voyage to Lorton.

Hello, you must be Mark and Liz's neighbour. It might make it up there again in a few weeks time. I was hoping to see yours but we didn't bump in to each other. Not sure why people are so shy. It is so hard to judge the market with the little information we have.

So refreshing to see this thread as I'm looking to buy once the right one (Targa NA1 or NA2 with pop-ups) comes along. There always seems to be a handful for sale, yet the prices vary so much and some don't make sense at all (£40K for a 96 Targa on 70K miles). To get an indication of what people have paid over the last few years would be priceless for someone like me, as my purchase will be my first NSX. Wonder how many of the forum members can still recall when they bought their 1st one :-)

It would be even more refreshing if anybody else joined in. Just out out of interest, for those who don't want to, why not? Anybody can find out what you paid for your house, why are you precious about car prices? In such a slow market this could be a valuable guide to buyers/sellers. Feel the community spirit...

2006 1991 NA1 Manual 53000 £20k
Now a completely different car....Supercharged, all need to change stuff done, complete exhaust upgrade, complete interior upgrade, Rear lights overhaul, Aftermarket wheels and suspension, carbon fibre bits etc.

Wouldn't sell for even £40,000...

Hi MC,

It is quite possible that the low response levels are not down to shyness but more to do with the simple fact that the majority of owners at some point have stated that their NSX is a long term ownership prospect. For this reason alone price paid or potential market value is of little or no interest until the time does arrive to let these special cars move on to a new keeper.

There is also the other factor that is a natural instinct that regardless of the article, people want to undervalue when buying and then inflate when selling.

Guide prices have been posted previously, and will again, but in the end will be down to the obvious basics ...

History, Condition, and buyers appetite. When I bought mine over 8 years ago I had spent several months deciding what I wanted. A dark coloured NA2 Targa, pre facelift. The car I bought met these requirements and I paid what I was happy to pay. At the time it was probably higher than some would pay, but it was what I wanted. What's it worth, today I don't know, maybe £10k more than I paid in stock presentation, maybe not, but as I'm not selling its not really relevant.

regards, Paul

I tend to agree with Paul. Like him I wanted a pre-facelift low mileage, unmodified, NA2 targa and finally got it after a 3 year wait. I count 5 others on this forum and I doubt there are many more in the country so very rare. I paid the price I wanted to pay from an extremely nice previous owner and the car has been carefully Kazzified ever since at some expense to get it in perfect condition. Would I get my money back - easily and with a profit based on current rising prices. Do I care? No, since I have no intention of selling. When I see how inferior cars like the Ferrari 308 are soaring in price I take it as indicative of the speculative nature of the market and not a reflection of a car's real intrinsic value as a joy to own and drive. If someone wants to buy an NSX since it appears undervalued in today's increasingly frenetic market to sell on at a profit, fine. This car deserves to appreciate but I would suggest that most of the members of this forum who are current owners don't care.

Sorry. I did look for a similar one on historic values but couldn't find one. I didn't want to repeat a thread, post a link to the most complete list on confirmed historic values and I'll add my details there.

Bought in 2011, 17.5K miles on the clock, paid £44K. I did toy with selling earlier this year due to lack of use, and would have been looking for £60K+. But I'm soooo glad I saw the light and decided to keep it. I've had an incredible summer with it - new clutch totally transformed the driving experience.

I still can't believe the LBBP on PH hasn't sold. If I didn't already have mine, I would have jumped at it a long time ago. In 10-20 years time, surely its current 61K miles will be totally irrelevant?

what is actually wrong with it?
has anyone even gone to view that is interested in NSX ownership?

I think some of you are missing the intended point of the thread.
It isn't a debate about anything.
There isn't any speculation.
No thoughts on what you would or wouldn't sell/buy at.
No thoughts on whether originality is best.

Just a list of actual confirmed prices with details to help prospective owners get an indication of what has been going on in the market.

Yep, and the sole reason of my disclosure.

(It amazes me when someone finds a thread boring and/or it makes them yawn, that they take the time and effort to post their thoughts and feelings. You're not being forced to read it, or post on it. If it's not for you, just move on.)

Bought as a new car so not necessarily following the purpose of OP but as a datum point, reference of JDM and interest on how much it costed if bought new (it would be nice to know the same for UK spec NSX), followings are my info;

Ordered in Apr/94, delivered Jul/94, 1994 JDM, minimum mileage on the odometer for the test driving session before leaving the factory, about JPY8800,000 including the Custom Order Plan of factory fitted 16/17 wheel and all sorts of tax.

It's a 2004.

FWIW, it had a FHSH and the remains of a 3-year Honda warranty. But quite frankly, I would have preferred it if the previous owner had had it serviced by Kaz. (Of course, I've rectified this.)

I'll let MC sort out the order / formatting, but here's mine and Bernev's. Haven't made a profit on mine due to the refurb work lavished on her and the new clutch, but I'm quite happy with the (net) running costs.

As with many other owners, mine's not for sale...well, not unless I got a very good offer. If anyone with an NA2 pre-facelift targa decides to sell, I could be tempted, but otherwise I'm sticking with what I've got, despite the mileage (now on 110k...20k over 5 years isn't too bad).

.....
Price - £12.5k

....Which is one reason why I won’t be posting my data on this thread. Condition is very important. Additionally I’m concerned about the data being biased towards low prices because of self selection – people could be more likely to post their data if they are proud about getting their car for a good price. It could be like dinner party house price conversations.

Some posters on this thread have said they are happy to share their data, because the value of their car is theoretical since they don’t plan to sell. I don't plan to sell my car either, but the value of your car could nevertheless become important if your car is written off, which doesn’t require much of a bump in our NSXs. I wonder if insurance companies will be looking at this thread.

Also if the data are biased in the way I mentioned above, it’s bad news for any forum member who is planning to sell. The low biased numbers could be used against them by a potential purchaser.

JMHO, and sorry if I sound like a grouch, but my view is that at best these data are flawed and at worst could cause forum members some problems.

I don’t like to say negative things on the forum, but in this case I thought it important to air this view.

Some fair comments there but I think it can work both ways. I've listened to Challenge Stradale owners talk up the value of their cars for the last 4 years or so. They all say they aren't selling and they are all quick to tell a story of the latest example going for a new high price. Maybe that's what we should be doing in this thread ;)

The insurance issue is easily resolved with an agreed value policy. I've done that as I think mine is at the higher end of the spectrum due to originality and milage and I don't want them taking the average of whatever is on the market at the time.

With regards to my car I have been transparent from the beginning with the issues it has and the fact it will take a shed load of money to get right. If I ever was to sell it (which will not be happening) I couldn't hide what I know about the car. I wouldn't want to hide the issues even if they have been resolved.

I am just lucky that this car came along when it did as the reality is I was being priced out of being able to afford an NSX. As for the insurance, I have an agreed value which is way, way off what a 1999 NSX would be available for today but I am happy with that.

It was the same story with the Porsche 911. I had been after a 964/993 Turbo for years but each time I got priced out and most of the time by owners talking up the value of their cars as T1LTU has mentioned above. In the end I did get a Porsche 996 C4 but its no classic turbo!!!

The thing is that to a lot of people the car is an investment and they get all wrapped up about it. To me the NSX was always about performance, and where it lacked it I gave it to it via SC, Cars are different things to different people. Just enjoy the car and dont worry if it goes up or down in value! Just look at bitcoin LOL!

I will update the table when I get to the computer. If anybody is concerned that their car is not represented, put in your details. This isn't about resale or aspirations, just what you paid at the ttime.I like to think I am not biased. I love the NSX, but I love my other 6 as well.

Hi, I purchased my 1992 UK spec Formula red NA1 NSX manual coupe in 1998 for the princely sum of £21,000, mileage then was 46000 now it's on 136000
I was the 7th owner of this beautiful car and I appear to be the only owner to fall in love with it as it seemed to have changed hands every year until I fell for its charms and I have no plans ever to sell it. :)

Thank you very much to everybody who has replied to this, it looks like it is starting to get somewhere. I know there is some resistance as it is thought that this is self-selecting and biased. The best way to remove any bias and make this even more useful is to make sure that any purchases or sales you have made are included. Remember, it doesn't matter whether you were buying or selling, the price is still the same so it is still equally valid. If you are on your third NSX you would have 5 valid reference points (unless you neglect to sell the first two cars :) ).

Hi Mistercorn, very interesting to see how long people have owned these great cars but wouldn't it be even more interesting to know what mileage they are on to date.

You obviously have all the contact details for the owners and I'm sure if you asked to print the current mileage for each car the owners wouldn't mind.

By adding that column it would be even more interesting to see who uses them on either a regular or occasional basis and unlike other "supercar" mileages it would show how irrelevant mileage really is when considering to purchase one.

As you already know mine is now on 136,000 over 16 years, so that averages just over 5,500 miles a year, during my keep, where as in its first 6 years from new it averaged nearly 7,700 a year.

Otherwise very interesting and well done.

Mistercorn
17-12-2014, 09:57 AM
This doesn't tell you anything about how long people have owned the cars. Just how much it was either bought or sold for. Many cars appear in there twice when they have been bought and then sold on, so the person who gave me that information would not know the current mileage. As such we don't even know that these cars are still owned by people on the forum. It is purely a record of transactions.
No reason not to start a new thread on mileage though...

Of use if you're trying to agree the value of your car with your insurer?
I've just renewed with Tesco Car Insurance (£202!!), no limit on the value of my car but no agreed value either.
I could see this coming in handy if I had to claim on my insurance.

Holy cow! These values for higher milage cars are low! Buyers seem to DO care about milage from what the table says. Or those high milage cars needed much repairs. I'm over at 100k miles now but the car drives way better than when I bought it for some serious money (continental Europe, so it doesn't count here) and is 'younger' than even a car of the last year of production due to extensive maintainance and revisions. Of course, I won't sell it for a price offered in the Region of a used 2005 (but won't find anyone who would buy it too).

Rob_Fenn
14-01-2015, 06:16 PM
It would be nice to have NA1 or NA2 as this would be useful for a quick glance.

Just think, i looked at a black 3.0 with just over 100k miles on about 5 years ago and i ended up walking away as the guy refused to go below £10k - which i was quite put out by at the time!

Looks like the same car would be worth double that today, if not more.

Mistercorn
14-01-2015, 07:00 PM
Then you would want pre/post facelift as well, and by the time we are done there would be 1 car in each category :)

The circuit blue NA2 2001 car sold at Silverstone auctions today at just under £71k inc buyers premium. I hope we hear from the new owner on the forum soon.

Interestingly a few cars did not make their reserve including two Porsche GT3 Gen 1s and a F355 GTB.

That is a very strong price for a car with non-original suspension, wheels, and exhaust. It makes mine look like a bargain at £65k.

There’s a RHD 92 manual 95,000km on collecting cars currently bidding at A$120,000 + fees (approx £70,000!)

That’s pretty strong

I was looking at the JDM market recently and the door is well and truly shut. Unless you have a lot of money!
In truth this probably happened a couple of years back. This market is now exclusively for the most affluent parts of Asia.
Apparently, the UK is the cheapest place to buy RHD versions.

NZNick

Further to the above, the price in Japan of non-garage-queen mileage 1991-94 MT NSX is now more that the price I paid for my 63,000km 1999 Type S in August 2014...
Anything with mileage < 30,000kms is POA, presumably the seller expects well in excess of 10 million JPY!!!

I sold my NSX a few years ago, sort of regretting this, and lots of life things happened since, so I'm out of touch. Until recently I deliberately avoided Car sites as they are catnip to me. Just wondered where prices were now. Maybe for a decent early model average plus miles, manual?

Well, some people are being asked to pay £500,000. For (allegedly) Senna's NSX, now on Autotrader:

I think typically the owner is trying to raise the profile - the advert states that Senna owned the car, this doesn't even agree with his blog page where he states the car was owned by Honda and available to Senna when he was in Portugal (this is backed up by the fax included in the blog) I suspect though that anyone who contemplates laying out this amount of money will do due diligence before buying. Rob has never been backward in coming forward. I do think this kind of behaviour casts a shadow over the OC for supporting this at Silverstone.

it'll only be at silverstone if they are giving him special treatment :)

I think typically the owner is trying to raise the profile

if he was serious it wouldn't be listed on autotrader, it'll be at Bonhams.... or RM Sotherbys...... or shipped the Barret Jackson..... not autotrader......

I’ve just taken a look at the photos of the car in question and I guess the owner has decided to leave it unrestored. The odd rusted bolt, missing grommets and the thin layer of dirt is no big deal. I wonder whether this is the way potentially historic cars should be viewed? Personally I like everything to be clean and to be in it’s right place, so when I look at it/drive it, it somehow feels complete. But then I’m mental and it’s all in my fragile little mind. So there is undoubtably a healthier middle ground. However, and it’s not always easy to see from the photos; why spend time on the bodywork and ignore the rest?
I’d just like to say that I’m not trying to be judgy. It’s just a question. I’ve never seen the car and I’m only going on the photos.

goldtop

I suppose knowing that in the dirt somewhere is some Senna DNA might make it extra collectible? Which is ironic since the most famous picture of him with the car is him cleaning it.

I guess 20% of the value is the physical car. And as-is-patina or squeaky-clean probably only accounts for 10% of that bit. So we're talking about 2% of the value being affected by the condition.

Senninha
28-04-2024, 11:38 AM
Detailed and valeted to as-new condition theres no reason why, with this mileage it wouldn't break into 6 figures like the Black NA1 recently acheived. Add in the known usage (not ownership as I understand it to be) by Ayrton and maybe someone would go 150k ...

I seem to recall when this was first discovered and spoken about in any detail some years ago, along with another Black NA1, there was an asking price around ten percent of the £500k .....

If I had a red NA1 and was going to shows this year, Id make up a set of those plates for display purposes just for the fun of it ...

If it’s only a number plate issue, try this with a one digit difference, the link has been taken from a similar thread on Prime.
