Hi all
Does anyone know the max speeds in 1st,2nd,3rd on UK gearing and Japanese gearing?
Hi Sammy,
You mentioned in a recent post hitting almost 90 in 2nd...I am wondering if you have standard UK gearing and if my (UK) car has been modified to Japanese gearing, as mine gets nowhere near 90 in 2nd.
Not sure if I am on the right track with this, but any help appreciated...
Cheers

standard gearing (5 speed) sees the following speeds at 8,000rpm in each gear:
1st = 45
2nd = 81
3rd = 114
4th = 144
5th = 186
JDM gearing (5 speed) sees the following speeds at 8,000rpm in each gear:
1st = 45
2nd = 73
3rd = 101
4th = 139
5th = 186
the difference is subtle and what the JDM gears give you at the lower speeds, they take away from you at the higher speeds, as the engine revs as you drop into the next gear are higher with JDM gears as you change into 2nd and 3rd (keeping you in VTEC) but dropping into 4th and 5th the revs are higher with STD gears.
also, speeds are variable according to the ratio of the final drive, oprions are:
standard = 4.062:1
Type-R = 4.235:1
OS Giken = 4.4:1
Comptech = 4.55:1
see the attached excel spreadsheet for the lowdown on all of these (file is zipped)

Darren,
What a golden star you are! Is there anything you dont know? 8)
That answers it. Mine is modified to be the Japanese gearing so..

Chaps.
Martin, you're not going mad.
I have a 1996 Targa and have to agree that the gearing is not as tall as HUK would lead us to believe. Either that, or they produced a batch of green cars in 1996 with Japanese gearing.
I had a test run at the weekend and at 8,000 in second....
81mph - no chance my friends. Speedo reading low seventies, so allowing for slightly inaccurate speedo, reckon 73 is correct.
I'm 99.9% certain the Gearbox is original. No record of any work and it's documented back to six months old, unless it was warranty work (that is usually retained by dealer and no paperwork given to the owner).
I knew i was much quicker accelerating than anyone else - that explains it :wink:
Anyone else ?

I can go over 80 in second no problem. So it would seem maybe your gearbox is not 'normal' in some way. Lucky you (or your clutch is slipping :) ).
I wonder if the gearbox serial number designates the intended country of use?

HI guys,
yeah I have to agree (give or take speedo accuracy) that I was hitting just over 80 mph in second.....that's before my clutch went tits-up that is!!
One wee question 186 ?? I thought top speed was 176?

standard gearing is capable of 186, but in standard form the NSX lacks the power to beat the wind resistance to acheive this figure.
with a little more power/nice tailwind/downhill run, and enough balls you will be able to get there ;)

there is an nsxcb member who has taken a 186mph photo themselves - I have seen the pic on his phone!
maybe if he wants to email the pic to me I'll post it up here (anonymously) to rival that Acura picture from Prime with one of our own?

Its gotta be supercharged surely?

Its not supercharged. I know who Darren is referring to. Stock NSX at the time of photo.

I had 182mph on the tach 2 weeks ago on the Austrian Autobahn. The TCS yellow light came on like in the pic too. I asked at prime what accurs that problem: http://www.nsxprime.com/forums/showthread.php?t=69298
I have Taitec headers, Taitec light weight exhaust, procar cabron air box, removed tools from trunck and spare tire with bracket. light weight rims Volk ce28n 16/17 inch combo with Yoko A022

spotted a set of Type-R (NA1) short gears and LSD plus R&P going cheap on NSXPrime here (http://www.nsxprime.com/forums/showthread.php?t=69929) at $1600
if anyone is looking to alter their gearing for more oomph then this looks like a good deal
the final drive ratio from an NA1 Type-R is 4.235:1 rather than 4.062:1 - see the comparison in the file on page 1 of this thread for the differences this would bring.

Martin, Jeremy I'm with you, [some] UK have JDM gearing; your's and mine [UK supplied 1995 coupe, 16/17" wheels].
Checked against the speedo and GPS [Road Angel], the speeds in the gears are:
2nd=71 @ 8k;
3rd=102, well 51 @ 4k; and
4th=138, well 69 @ 4k.
So JDM = UK for my car, see Darrens spread sheet;
Transmission number SR8M 6100579.
HOWEVER,
my handbook quotes the following in gear maxima;
1st=72kph,45mph;
2nd=114kph,71mph; so far so good;
3rd=159kph,113mph;
4th=216kph,134mph; and 5th as "top speed".
Darren, others, any ideas?

Mine does over 80 in second, and tops out at the 186 (verified by friends GT3 with GPS). Was almost stock except for 17, 18 wheels which might affect gearing, and was not long after an engine rebuild with skimmed higher compression heads! Had a few more mods since then so hope to have another go!
Never had the TCS light on though.
