Hi,

My late '99 Type S (model code GH-NA2)

http://i.imgur.com/DMeNbbe.jpg

has just started to show a CEL error - on investigation with an OBD II scanner the error reads:

P0135 O2 Sensor Heater Circuit Bank 1 Sensor 1

Could someone tell me if this can be fixed by simply cleaning the sensor, or does it need to be replaced?

Also, having read the threads on both here and Prime, I'm not clear as to which O2 sensor this is.

The Honda part number could be 36531-PBY-003 or possibly 36541-PR7-J51 (but I'm thinking the former).

www.sparkplugs.com (http://www.sparkplugs.com) list both Bosch & NKT/NGK O2 sensors:

# BOS15478
# NTK24586

Are these the correct products?

I have read the various pros and cons with Denso, NKT/NGK etc. and particularly want to avoid buying the product with the wrong cable length, as being over here in NZ postage isn't insignificant....

Any assistance gratefully received.

Nick

Hi, Nick.

As mentioned many times on here, you need to be very careful when ordering the parts around the exhaust area from US as the introduction of OBD2 and the spec of the CAT are different from other country spec/year model.

Presuming that your JDM VIN starts as NA2-110***** and you got DTC P0135 (you can also short the SCS blue 2pin connector at the passenger footwell. You should get CEL #42), then the correct parts no. is 36532-PBY-003.
It’s the Bank 1 (Rear bank for NSX), Sensor 1/Primary/Upper stream/pre-CAT/before-CAT O2 sensor.

If you want to be sure, please email me your full VIN using the 'Send email' feature by clicking on my user ID.

Both parts no. in your post above are for the front bank so not correct.

For the O2 sensor heater circuit failure, unless your sensor connector is not locked properly or the cable is being damaged, I’m afraid you have to replace the sensor.
Please check the lock of the connector first before placing the order as from time to time, I have seen loose connector especially at the rear bank one.

If you have the multi meter, you can check the heater circuit fairly easily. Just check the resistance of the two wires with the same colour (normally, both black or grey) at the sensor side of the connector.
Most of the time, you will see open circuit when the heater circuit failed.
For the rear primary O2 sensor, in order to get the connector closer to you, you will need to pop out the cable grommet from the cable holder mounted on the vertical rear panel inside the eng bay.

The ECU controls the heater current duty cycle to keep the sensor at optimum temperature especially during the eng warm up stage. The heat from the exhaust gas will then take over the majority of the condition but for environment reason during the cold start condition, CEL stays until you fix the heater circuit issue.

Presuming that my assumption of your VIN is correct and you are still using the OEM header, then you can use NTK #24679.
I installed it for another owner so it will fit.
The cable length is just a bit too long compared to the OEM one but no problem. Better than too short.....

Rock Auto is cheaper than Sparkplugs.com but not sure of their batch control.
Should be fine for DIY usage.
Please make sure to select the correct parts no. if ordering from Rock Auto as they normally display the O2 sensor list based on the year model for US Acura NSX and obviously, the OEM parts no. is different from yours when you select the 1999 Acura NSX.

Amazon US won’t deliver the sensor to UK but if they do for NZ, then that’s a good option as well.
Haven’t checked other shops on Amazon so not sure about the delivery.

OEM sensor is from Denso.
I never tried it so can't confirm from my own experience but they list #234-4730 as the replacement for your NSX spec.
I know NTK measures the sensor cable length from the face of the connector to just before the HEX body starts (end of the metal tube where it meets the HEX body and opposite side of the threaded flange) and NTK #24679 measured at 899mm.
Denso states that #234-4730 measures at 879mm but again, I never seen one so I don't know how it was measured.

By the way, you may have trouble removing the existing sensor at the Rear bank.
Heat is your friend but with the heatshield surrounding it, not easy to apply the heat especially with the engine kept inside the bay.

Good luck.

Thanks Kaz for the ultra-comprehensive reply! I'll let you know how I get on.
My mistake for thinking that Bank 1 would be front, not rear.
Yes, original JDM VIN starts NA2-110#####.

Just purchased from Amazon.com - I have an NZ Post US address that I use for work that then ships on to NZ.

Part has arrived and will be fitted by the local Honda dealer this week - they are going to check the car for fluids, filters, lubrication etc. while they have it.

Oxygen sensor successfully fitted by Southern Honda - it took them a bit of effort getting the failed one out aparently. They couldn't believe how good condition the car was in ( from what they could see - they haven't opened the engine ) for an almost 16 year old car. Lots of compliments from the staff, some of whom hadn't seen one in the metal before - several of whom now have a strong desire to get one. Should be a nice day ( for winter ), so a trip out is in order tomorrow. I'll try to get some photos, if anyone is interested.

Car has generated another CEL code, this time P0141 O2 sensor heater circuit bank 1 sensor 2.

So this time it is the downstream sensor of the rear bank. Can anyone confirm the Honda part number, and the NTK/NGK part please?

Thanks,

Nick

OEM: 36542-PR7-J51
This is not used on US Acura model as they use –A51.

NTK #24584: The cable length is bit shorter than the OEM and you will need to modify the cable routing but not too bad.
Depending on the Lot No., you may receive different shape sensor (diameter of sensor body) and different origin.
Mine was made in Japan but I know other NTK sensors are assembled in the US using the materials/components from US and other countries.

Just remember, for the downstream one, the connector/terminal is different between the Front (Bank 2) and Rear (Bank 1) bank sensor so make sure to select the correct spec.

For your reference......
Denso 234-4621: As you have US address, looking at Amazon US, this one is much cheaper than the #24584 so you may want Denso one this time.
I never used this specific Denso one but I believe the cable length is longer than the NTK #24584.

Once again, thanks so much Kaz, I was getting confused by the various different methods of describing the sensor position.
Thanks for the Denso part number - this might be the way to go this time.
I'll let you know how I get on.

Denso part ordered from sparkplugs.com - much cheaper than the NTK part as you said.

All sorted - O2 sensor changed successfully, and Warrant of Fitness (equivalent of MOT) passed.

Thanks Kaz for your assistance once again.

Car cover from SpecialisedCovers put on for the first time - fits like a glove.
