View Full Version : Rather unusual photo request: titanium key!

Good afternoon folks, I have a rather random enquiry! A magazine I work with are looking for a shot (or shots) of a titanium NSX key - sadly my car didn't come with that key (they were Type R, weren't they?), but if any of you folks have one and are local to me I'd be extremely grateful if I could come and photograph it! Alternatively, they might very well accept a picture you take, I would just be the party to hook you up. Please feel free to email me steve@stevehallphotography.net if you can help or advise.

cheers,
Steve

Not specific to Type-R AFAIK.

I'm guessing you need a high res photo? None of these do? https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=google+image+nsx+titanium+key&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjohbvu6pXNAhXrLcAKHRUTBz8Q_AUIBygB&biw=1680&bih=904

Yeah needs to be hi res, and as it's for use in a high quality publication, lifting from google not a solution. Luckily one of the good folks from here has contacted me and I'm most likely shooting his key tonight so the mag will have their images first thing tomorrow!

Not sure for the market outside Japan but Monel (not titanium) NSX key was the standard Main key for all NSX models until the coded key was introduced.

I still use the original Monel key every day that came with my NSX 22 years ago so the colour has changed (more like shiny gold these days) and I have a blank Monel one but the parts bag is not even opened so glad someone else has offered the support.
As a side note, depending on the country spec of the key, please photoshop the key code or even the actual key cut for security reasons.

For security reason, please do not post the image of one's IG key.
Above photo has been edited although it's too late as it's been cached.
There is a way to create copy of the key even without showing the registration document or even the existing key so please be careful.

Great G5 Clifford alarm sytstem though Graham, all it needs now is the engine start option on the star button and timed headlamp opreration on the AUX button installed and that would give the owner the most fun with his big boy toy, the NSX.:)

Sorry Kaz but I'm still not sure how showing an image of the keys will breach security on the vehicle as no registration number or car ID is shown and there's a Cat 1 alarm fob intalled on the car to boot.🤔

I'd suggest Kaz is right but I think it would be highly unlikely for someone to reproduce a key. If you can make one from a plasticine mould then you could make a "replica" key from copying the key ridges to make a mould. Then using a key blank produce a key. Especially easy to get accurate with a high quality picture. Of course you still need to know which car the key is for lol.. All sounds extreme and far-fetched I suppose but I'm sure there are professional car thieves that could use this info to help in their "work"

Bit off topic of this thread but I will just say I had my OEM spare blank key cut for both Honda and Mazda even without showing the registration doc or sending back my original keys to Japan.
Especially, the Mazda UK blank key is not compatible with the JDM Eunos (Mazda) one so the spare key had to be created using specific method and it’s from the OEM blank key.
You don't even need the high res. photo or don't need to create mold.
I don’t even need the Reg. No. because from the original photo, I can easily narrow it down to what NSX to look for.

I showed a few UK NSX owners (and ex-owners) on how I can disarm the security system of their NSX in front of them even without the proper remote fob and for someone like me, not that difficult to start the engine without the IG key.

If I want to, I can even bypass the later spec immobiliser on our NSX.

If I can do it, there will be someone else who can do the same.

No further comment and period.

Last page of this months EVO, must be difficult to be photographically (is that a word!) creative with just a key - the one used looks suitably worn (and no serial number visible) after 20 years of use. Well done NSXCB for advising and engaging with Steve for this shoot.

I think the unique NSX suspension components deserve to be in their Art of Speed feature.....

I saw your post exiges1 and then quickly opened the dark grey plastic envelope which pops through my door each month and what a great write up, especially when you consider it's only about a car key.

I've had my Monel key blank for some time now and have still yet to find a key cutting specialised (and that includes Honda dealers) who cannot give me a guarantee it won't get damaged on their machines while being cut and when costing well in excess of £100 I'm now caught between a rock and a hard place to find someone.

Any suggestions please?

i had both my MONEL (NSX) and titanium (300zx) key cut by a standard lock smith near me. They just used the key number and said it was fine. They said it cut just like a regular key.

I had the debur it a bit more when i got home (they did but not enough as both materials are tougher than the alloy they are used to) but it was perfect otherwise.

Are the Monel keys blanks still available from Honda?

No longer possible to place order in Japan but was available in US at least last year.
I ordered several at that time.
Probably still available in UK as well but the price is…..

SOS still list them and Acurapartswarehouse, cheaper from the latter.

Thanks Pride - I now have a crick in my neck. Hopefully it will be sorted by the time my copy of Evo reaches NZ.

As an aside, my '99 Type S has one of these keys, which must mean that it doesn't have the same security system that US & UK cars of the same age have.
