Sidelight screws (pop-up)

Hello,

Is it possible to remove these without damaging the side light?

I think the heads on mine have completely corroded and I cannot seem to remove them - or even see a slot for a JIS cross-headed screwdriver.

Any tips (a source of very long, cool-running drill bits!) would be very much appreciated.

You can get to the back of the sidelight by removing the headlamp.

Pop the lights up, there are three bolts accessed from the top and another behind the liner in the wheel arch. Undo these and the whole headlamp unit lifts out. Marking the bolt positions can be handy when it comes to re-aligning the headlamp.

You might be able to twist the screw or cut it from the back.

The combined unit clips behind the bumper moulding at the outboard edge, with a spring steel strip retaining that edge; hence the floaty feel. Once the retained screw is released; push the outer edge in against the spring and the inneredge of the unit should rotate forward.
If you round the head off on the screw [or a previous owner has done so] and you need to change one of the two bulbs, the easiest way forward is to;-
Have a practice on the other unit to see how it should be done and then:-
1] raise headlight,
2] remove 2 blanking plugs [outer face only] then remove 4 philips/JIS screws holding headlamp cover/garnish.
3] rotate headlamp cover forward, its lower lip will retain it.
4] unbolt headlamp from its cradle [4 bolts], release garnish and rest headlamp as far backwards as possible
5] the spring steel clip retaining the outer lip can then be seen, and then removed, 1 bolt
6] the covers for the 2 bulb holder can be accessed and the bulbs changed
7] reassembly as Mr Haynes would say is in the reverse order.
If the other side lamp unit has been sucessfully removed, you will see the mechanical fixing is a single spire nut which has been slide onto an offstand bracket moulded into the bumper. Suitable brute force, and wiggling the lamp about should allow the lamp, screw and spire nut to be removed in one go: BUT dont blame me if something breaks.
At this stage it may be worth hunting for the 3 or 4 drill bits that broke whilst trying to drill the head of the nut off.
Which leaves the 3 option as drill the head of the nut off, personally I'd recommend starting with a goodly collection of drill bits, they will all be needed.

Before I start writing potentially long post, could you clarify the reason for removing the sidelight assy?

Are you replacing the light bulb inside the assy, the assy got damaged so replacing it or something else???

Depending on the answer, there are several suggestions.

If just replacing the light bulb, you can do so from the top by removing the head light cover and if you need extra space, best removing the head light unit as well. Just 4 bolts holding it.

At this stage, I don’t know the purpose (hence, my question above) but I don’t recommend drilling out the screw head.
You need to remove the screw body from the spring washer at the other end in order to remove the assy without cracking the ‘tab’ on the sidelight body.

Before I start writing the long post, I must update my blog for other owners so I’ll just post the photo first.

Thanks for the replies, everyone.

Kaz is on the money - I have a side light (it's an LED unit) which goes 'flickery after a few minutes. That suggests a high resistance somewhere.

Removing the headlight seems to be the best solution - it wasn't entirely clear trying to look round it with a torch, wherther access from the wrong side was possible.

The photos have answered my question.

It's one of those cars - if you start off in the wrong place, disassembly can be very time-consuming. Or if you start in the right place, pretty straightforward.
