Hi all.
Is this normal? It does seem to be quite noticeable idling when warm. Also I can hear it with the window down when passing solid walls, through tunnels etc

Not heard of an injector tick.
I think it's more likely to be in need of an LMA adjustment.

This is how mine is sounding pretty much, so should I be worried? I'm about to do an oil change.

I wouldn't be worried, why?
You can have:
- valve ticking (better than silent because loud valves are happy valves unless it's far too wide)
- LMA sicking a little bit (no damage to be feared)
- injector ticking (I don't see a problem)

The car has no hydraulic valve adjustment, so a little bit of noise is normal. I've reduced my engine's ticking by going from a 0W/40 to a 5W/40 oil but that was not the reason for the change. I'd wait until the next TB job and extend it by doing the LMA also. The valve adj. is done with it anyway.

Hi, Dave.

You can hear the INJ ticking at idle rpm but if you are saying that you can hear it while driving, then it's not the INJ.

If it's the valve clearance or the LMA, just leave it until the next TB/WP service as goldnsx mentioned.

I too would be more worried if I couldn't hear anything, it just seemed unusually loud to me. I'm still getting to know my car and it's characteristics. The TB is due this year in terms of age so I will get it all checked at the time.

That's a good opportunity (not to check them but) to replace them. :) All LMAs are going to be noisy sooner or later. For replacing them I highly recommend to take the engine off the car even though it's not obligatory. But you (or your garage) can work a lot easier and you avoid horror stories like VTEC parts falling in the oil pan resulting in oil pressure of zero in VTEC.

BTW even with new LMAs and correct valve adjustment my engine has some slight ticking but it sounds very healthy. I never worried about it in the last 16 years.

Thanks for the advice goldnsx. It sounds like like then that even after replacement it's normal to have some ticking. I will be taking it to a specialist for the work so will see what they think.

Dave, I'm sure if you asked Kaz nicely he wouldn't mind casting a quick ear over it to let you know how serious it is.

It could do with an experienced ear to see if it needs attention. Im only getting the ticking when upto to temp, it's quiet on startup. I've done some LAM research and understand that they were revised in 1999 to remedy this problem? My car is 2000.

On Kaz' most recent blog, he did replace LMAs on a vehicle that had the spring re-engineered type. They should be more durable, but they are not invincible. So it could very well be your problem.
But think of other possibilities, sometimes a small exhaust leak somewhere can cause a "ticking" noise etc...

What weight of motor oil are you using?
Does the tick increase in frequency with acceleration?

I'm just about to do a change with 5w/40 so will see if that makes a difference. It certainly sounds like LMA's and it will be looked at. I wouldn't say it increases with acceleration but I can hear it sometimes whilst driving, not particularly pleasant! I guess I'm just a bit paranoid being new to the car, I've never experienced this with my previous vtec's atleast not to this degree. Although I'm hearing other NSX engines and they have that tick too so it appears to be normal.

Year model is always bit confusing as the definition changes from one market to the other.

Quite often, I had to ask the VIN to the owners when they ask me several questions because the year model they think is not necessarily the same from the Honda system point of view.

Please do not publish your VIN on here.

For your reference, if your NSX is UK spec NA2, then your VIN would be in the form of JHMNA2xxxxx*** where xxxxx is either 140YT or 170YT for 2000 model.
*** is a certain number of digits for the rest of VIN.
With 2000 model, the latest spec LMA was already installed from the factory and it has shorter height than the pre-00 model LMA.

If your NA2 VIN is 140XT or 170XT, it's 99 model and left the factory with the classic design LMA.

My vin has the YT which is good news. Whilst on the subject, the last digits are the build number?

Update. Oil and filter change done, driven 100 miles or so. Noticably quieter but still has that ticking but not so tinny.
