I Love this Video as it shows your typical 2017 Civic Type R Owner!

Remember this is a car some would describe it's looks as "going through Halfords backwards".

Well, I had to smile too. He might be a little bit older than the average Type R owner but not by a high amount. In Germany, quite a lot of the owners are around 45-50. The price of the car and the high insurance costs deter people below 30 someone argued.

I had a test drive of the 2017 Civic Type-R on Saturday while my NSX was getting its MoT equivalent - this wasn't planned, the dealer just said take it for a spin, so I did.
To be honest, it felt like any recent car that you would hire at an airport - over-assisted in the steering department, easy to drive but not at all involving. The clutch pedal was feather-light, as if it wasn't connected to anything mechanical. I tried the 3 driving modes - I couldn't detect much difference between them apart from noise. When the opportunity to press the loud pedal presented itself, there was noticeable lag before acceleration occurred, followed by a dose of torque steer - not something I have encountered before. This coupled with the very, very light steering was a bit unsettling. The noise from the engine / exhaust wasn't inspiring. The interior was ok, but the plastics felt a bit thin and hollow. It did feel as though you were sitting on rather than in the car, despite the high-waistline doors/windows. The B-pillar was right by my right eye - quite distracting but not uncommon on 4/5 door cars.
Overall it was ok, but just not anything special. All in my humble opinion of course.

None of which, to my eyes at least, stops the car from looking like it has been dragged backwards through Halfords!

Thanks for sharing your test drive experience. I didn't have a chance to do so as the dealer was in the fear of getting miles on his car. Ok, I'm not a customer of them yet. But they were not eager to gain one though.
Interesting that you point out facettes of the car that all the test driving videos so far didn't reveal. The torque steer, the very light steering the turbo lag, nothing of these have been mentioned. Maybe all is relative to them and stresses the need to get an impression on your own. Or maybe they just copy/paste the Honda marketing statements. Esp. while the stress that the seat position is -5 cm compared to the FK2R.
For a car wearing the Type R badge and being quite expensive (for a Honda) the driving experience really should be special enough. What really turns me off is that it's not made in Japan like no model in their line up right now (no Accord anymore here). So, I'd better stay with my DD for now and praise my independacy an old car gives you.

Once inside the car, you can't tell what it looks like on the outside* i was a bit taken aback when I got back to the dealership and got out - there really is too much going on on the outside!
* the back spoiler does cut interior mirror viewing rearwards, but not too much. The small slot of a rear window reduces that view more.

Less is more as the old saying goes! Looking at one from the outside it didn’t do anything for me. I’d personally feel a bit of a prat driving that down the road.

i like it ... I appreciate that its not to everyone's tastes but ITS DIFFERENT
motoring public have got to used to being sold the same old thing repackaged numerous times
Honda has at least done something different
my brother has the fk2 and there is no torque steer on his. I also find the car a hoot to drive.

As this particular model is such a marmite car Honda/Acura should, in my opinion offer the consumer an optional switchable extreme but totally legal and compliant exterior/interior lighting kit as the body and dash design has so many great places they can be placed.

Hideous looking thing ... there's not a single line that flows ... it may be good on a track but hardly something you could make rapid progress on her majesty's highway without attracting lots of the wrong attention.
Ive not driven one but did play with one on the 507 recently, it didn't stay on my tail for long so perhaps it was being driven by one of the video stars above ... think I'll stick to weasel Q-car, more comfort, space, economy and thanx to a remap, more useable performance day to day ...

I'll feel like one of the two guys in about two weeks as I've pulled the trigger on a blue one as my new DD. I testdrove one and was very impressed as the car offers a wide range from comfort to racing. It's like having two cars in one. The car is very refined as Honda did an excellent job on that one. It's the hottest hatch I've bought new in the last 20 years. Modern cars feel a little bit far away from the road BUT NOT this one. I have a pretty indulgent neighborhood and life is too short to drive boring cars. I also drove with the FK2R as a passenger with a driver showing my the full potential of it and I don't dare to say but it's faster in every dimension than a stock NSX NA1. For the (reasonable) price you pay you get a hell of a car and a boatload of fun. As it will be my DD driving comfort and usabilty are very important. Attraction: I'll beware from any boyracers and I hope that the police will be tolerant too. :)
Well done, Honda!

Agreed. Think it offers a cracking drive, room for family and can add on 5yr warranty and servicing for not much extra. Mrs will only accept black as it disguises the "challenging" styling somewhat!

What would be the result of the acceleration from 50 test if both cars started in second gear rather than third?
In the brake test - were both cars on the same brand / model of tyres?
Interesting, none-the-less.

I think the Civic Type R comes with Continental SportContact 6 tyers and I would guess the NSX is on Bridgestone RE050's
Both cars are Honda UK's own press cars, and are looked after to a very high standard!

The videos show that it needs a NA2 to keep up with it. As soon as it's rolling it's faster...well but not against a CTSC NSX.
One thing it can't match (like all modern cars) is the driving experience of a NSX Gen1. That's a pure NSX NA1/2 and unreached territory and the graph in the marketing brochure where the NSX points to an F1 car is still valid. That experience has also been realised by some of the journalists like here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XcD1To6vsAo&t=490s "to get anywhere near this thing" is no exaggeration.

I think it you'd have to take one round the 'ring and reassess!
