View Full Version : Gaydon - British Motor Museum - a visit ?

Is there any interest in running a club meeting at the British Motor Museum on JUNE 30th 2018?
If there are over 4 members here who would commit I will approach the organisation to see what is possible - we could also consider holding the AGM here (thoughts?)
Check out the venue here https://www.britishmotormuseum.co.uk/
for those that have been here more than 2 years ago you will be surprised to see the new building that holds a collection of Jaguars - from the old SS to the Le Mans racers and various prototypes.
This is also the home of the JLR restoration centre where from a gallery you can see the cars undergoing a full restoration - cars of all ages
An event for June ??????

That sounds like a great venue to visit, lots to do, see and plenty of room for sectioned off parking which they can arrange for club bookings I believe.
So pease put me down on the list.

It's not a bad place. Completely focused on British metal (unsurprisingly), which makes it a little narrow for me (and too full of odd BL stuff), but it's a good place to spend a few hours.
The kicker might be the entrance fee...have to see if we can run a meet there without getting stung for £14 each.

I'd be up for that. I work next door but hardly ever venture in to the museum.

And yes it's stuffed with BL stuff, but then it is the "British Motor Museum"
If you can't afford the £14 I am sure we can run a fund for you .....

Sounds like a cracking idea Gromit!
The only date in June I would recommend to avoid would be the weekend of the 16th and 17th June, (24 hours of Le Mans weekend).

Just need to put the date (tbd) into my already busy calendar…..

I would be up for this,
I would suggest either Saturday 23rd or Saturday 30th, that gets Le Mans out of the way and the weather might even be half decent.
How about making a weekend of it and Hotel / meal on Saturday night and then a drive on Sunday?

If the club approached them officially, perhaps they would bring the rather-NSXish MG EXE out of the (quite crowded) floor display.
Would be a unique opportunity to get a few shots of it side-by-side with the NSX.

I was up there a few weeks ago for the Jaguar breakfast meeting and the EXE is back up on it elevated plinth so might be more involved than just rolling it outside for a few piccies ... nice idea though ...

After weeks of trying to contact someone there - SUCCESS ! Well in part at least. They are waiting for confirmation from another event before they can say for sure. We also have the opportunity to hold the AGM at Gaydon, there is of course a cost - however if we can agree on the entrance fee and get enough people there I am sure we can do a deal !
So put a marker in your Diary ! 30th June

If this is not available may I suggest the Haynes motor museum in Sparkford Somerset? I went there once with the Lancia Integrale owners club, excellent museum I thought plus they have a test track which we were allowed to drive our cars on.

Having been there as well a few years ago I too can confirm it as a great venue if problems with Gaydon, the track is a bit too narrow for two cars to safely pass but as a time trial circuit it would be suburb and great fun. I remember getting my NSX sideways at speed around some of the corners.
From memory I believe they can also section off the cafe area for club meetings as well.
Probably the most welcoming and intimate museums in the U.K. anyone could visit.
Just be aware of the A303 forward facing speed cameras on route.😎

I just received confirmation that we have the date (30th June) at Gaydon - now all I need are people to sign up so I can get back to them with numbers - likely cost is £10 per person - this includes the Museum and the Collections Centre
Numbers people please .....
Note £10 is a discount of £4 over the normal public entry -

I went to Gaydon on Saturday for a Jaguar Breakfast Club meet. Very pleasent morning looking at Jags, then looking at the Jaguar Heritage Trust building. We could of spent more than the 3 hours we did spend.
For anybody taking kids, there is a really nice play area on site so they won't get bored, plus I can recommend the egg and bacon sandwich in the cafe. ;)

Arrive at Gaydon from 9:30
I will collect wrist bands for entry to the Museum and hand out to people (this will not be until after 10 am when the museum opens) - I will exchange each wrist band for the sum of £10. So far we have 14 cars and potentially 18 people - please let me know if I have this wrong, or you are bringing someone and they are not on the list. Not a problem to add people/cars.

If using M40, won't be a problem but if anyone driving through A5 around Milton Keynes, please note that there will be major roadwork with full/part closure at Old Stratford roundabout at Milton Keynes north from Friday evening till early Monday morning.
Also, both directions on part of A422 leading to this roundabout will be fully closed.
Similar to what happened at the time of Supercar Display at Silverstone recently but extra closure so please plan ahead.
