Changes to the MoT

May 20th sees the introduction of revised requirements for MoT, whilst the headline commentary is on the dropping of testing requirements for “historic” vehicles their are other changes.
Included in the proposal is that the retrofitting of HID lamps will be banned, but LED replacements are to be allowed - go figure.
Aftermarket steering wheels without airbags (where the OEMs had an airbag) are now to be banned.

this impending legislation has been causing ripples, waves and tsunami in the classic car world depending on the individuals interpretation.... it will have major repercussions for modified classics! i am hoping for the best and preparing for the worst!

as for dropping the requirement for pre-1960 cars to have an annual MOT despite the majority of those that responded to the consultation document saying it would be a bad idea.......

Looks like time to find friendly test stations with testers who like our classic but don’t know the full spec :) good luck everyone ... thankfully I’m not into modding ..

at least they decided that pre 2010 cars can have ABS deleted...... after Jan 1st 2010 cars, it's now 'not permissible to disable or remove ABS' they were trying to have that for ALL ABS equipped cars

As my ABS has never worked, what would I need to remove?

From the link I posted, (which defines what and how the MoT testers must conduct the test and a document that may or may not have been amended) - anyway, this is what the guy should be doing/ looking for:

1.6 Anti-lock braking system (ABS)
You must inspect any ABS systems fitted.
When testing ABS equipped vehicles, the road wheels that are lifted off the ground shouldn’t be allowed to rotate when the ignition is on. This can cause the ABS system to indicate a fault which may require specialist equipment to rectify.
If the ABS has been intentionally rendered inoperative, the whole system must be removed. This doesn’t apply to sensor rings or other ABS components which are an integral part of another component, such as a brake disc or drive shaft.
It's not permissible to remove or disable the ABS from a vehicle first used on or after 1 January 2010.

As my (unqualified) commentary- a ‘simple’ answer could be, if the ABS pump, reservoir and hard lines have been removed, and sufficient removal of wiring, electrical plugs and electronics so as not to
i) throw any warning lights and perhaps more importantly
ii) to cause distress to the Tester
then all may be well. At this stage and until a body of knowledge exists, all is speculation and conjecture.
