Choosing new rims

OK! I'm fed up looking for sodding tyres to fit my OEM 15" / 16" rims! I've decided to replace with 16/17 as the range of performance tyres available is much wider (including the very popular Eagle F1's). Assuming I do not get Honda ones; how does one go about choosing new rims? What size / offset do I go for? Cast or forged? What else is important? I am dazed and confused :shock: after looking at a couple of websites selling the things!

step one... find what wheels are available in the correct bolt pattern!! that drastically reduces the options available... when i was looking, every style i liked the look of weren't available!!!

I would not go above 17" front and 18" rear. If I was buying wheels I would go with 17,17 to broaden the choice of tyres and keep iy OEM.

As AR say's I would also look at going 17/17 if I were to change wheels again.

The choice for the 16 fronts seems VERY limited at the moment.

I have Volks racing GTU wheels from Japan. They are high quality and quite expensive!

It's worth having a good look on Prime first for ideas, this will give you the added advantage of knowing which wheels are likely to fit.

My wheels came from Whifbitz, who were very quick getting them, about three weeks, whereas some of the guys from Prime have been waiting over 6 months for the same style.
The only thing I'd be wary of is going too big. I went for 17's allround (17 x 8 and 17 x 9)and the car still feels balanced.
The only thing I'd do differently is increase the profile on the front from 215/40 to 225/40.

I deliberated for some time over new rims and narrowed it down to a choice of 3, the OEM 17's from the 02 model, Volks GTC or the Works. IMO, the downside with the latter 2 choices is they are both difficult to get hold of in 17's (larger are a bit easier) and costly (tho' I think James got a great deal on his GTU's). In the end I went with the OEM 17's and the F1's. These do come up from time2time, particularly on Prime.

It depends how much time you have, if your tyres are nearing the limit then you could probably pick up some 16/17 OEM rims to tide you over the winter??

Go OEM if you can, you won't regret it. Other than that go with a forged monoblock wheel.

I've retained the factory settings for my 98 even tho' I now have the later 17's. All seems fine.

I have never attacked the targas James, I believe that most of us will never outdrive a targa or coupe under normal conditions. I prefer the hard top for several reasons nothing to do with handling.

Can I just go back to the wheel /tyre size thing, (before this thread goes off on one). I'm a bit fed up with the standard 15"/16" wheels too, and I was looking at going to 16"/17". Some comments above talk about going 17" all round, does that mean that you have to change the profile on the front to keep the overall size the same??

That's exactly what I did. However, if you decide on 17 x 8" front wheels, whilst 215/40's are ok, I'd go for 225/40's as they give you a bit more rim protection.
