Locking wheel nuts - recommendations?

Can anyone recommend a decent quality / good looking (black or gunmetal) locking wheel nut for the NSX running on standard wheels?

I am thoroughly disilusioned with the OEM Honda version because they a/ look awful (IMHO) and b/ are a poor design if some air gun wielding muppet over torques them (I have just had one surgically removed via drilling, necessitating the replacement of a stud).

The spline drive 'lugs' (as our septic cousins are wont to call them) which Science of Speed sell ($45 plus shipping) look like they would do the job efficiently, but I am unsure of the cosmetic appearance of these. I am also concerned that they claim to be for '...your aftermarket wheels.....' - does this mean they are not suitable for OEM wheels?????

Most aftermarket ones have a conical base whereas ours need an acorn base.

Hence the difficulty!

I am (rapidly) learning this.

I understand Mugen do some locking 'lugs' for the NSX / S2000. I tremble to think what they cost (though sourcing in the US with the weak $ may ease the pain) - does anyone know if these are 'acorn' shaped?

I bought mine from Dali - see their website.

These are fine in all respects. I can't remember what I paid but it was much less than quoted by Chiswick Honda. Mind you, postage and import duty does add noticeably to the price.

If you are after OEM check ebay as normally you can get them for a about £ 10.00.

Nope, I am specifically looking for an alternative to the OEM locking nuts - partly for cosmetic reasons, but primarily because I do not like the design - it is very prone to damage by tyre wrench monkeys.

I have emailed King Motorsports to ensure that they will ship to me in a US hotel (some businesses are wary about this, despite assurances that I am happy for them to await fully cleared funds prior to shipping.

Anyway, once I hear back, i'll let you know.

I still haven't heard back from King, but based on todays exchange rate and rapid transit shipping, total cost for a set of these wheel nuts would be £58.93. That is to get them back to the UK - there will also be a (smallish) cost to post them on to you in the New Year.

Please confirm whether of not you are happy to go ahead (subject to King MOtorsport agreeing to ship to my hotel) on this basis (the actual cost will almost certainly change due to exchange rate fluctuations, and I will adjust personal totals accordingly).

OK chaps, I have heard from Scott at King Motorsports and he is happy to sell stuff to me so I have placed an order for 4 sets of black Mugen lugs.

Fingers crossed now that the order doesn't fail due to credit card issues (common ones are US vendor / UK card and shipping to (foreign) address, not cards registered address). Anyway, I have tried to anticipate these potential problems and have followed up my order with an email to Scott letting him know whats-what.

So, if we all cross our fingers and the god's are feeling kind we may have some funky new Mugen wheel nuts (which look an awful lot litke the OEM wheel nuts!!) early in the New Year.

My car came with OEM Honda locking nuts which dont look very pretty, but the big issue I had was one of them being over torqued and removal only being possible by way of a large drill (and a new wheel stud). Whilst it is not the fault of the design that the locking nut was over-torqued, I do believe the relatively shallow holes that the 'key spanner' slots into makes the design prone to removal problems.

Tyre monkeys will not be going near my Mugen nuts without very careful supervision from yours truely!

Mugen wheel nuts are now 'in hand', albeit still in the US. I should have them back in the UK by 3rd Jan. at which point I'll post them out if each of you would drop me a PM with the address you would like me to ship too.

After watching a set of these sit at £20 for a while on ebay, they have just sold for £92 plus £10 p&p, so glad I joined the group buy.

Simon, this made me smile especially given the amount of stick you seem to get for not cleaning the NSX.

Mine went on when I finished the brake refresh. Much neater. Re-torqued after 100 and 400 miles and to be sure, will check again at 1000 miles.

....been looking for one of these sockets. Am I right in thinking that they are available with a nylon insert that protects the chrome plated nuts as well as the outer nylon shield to protect the wheel nut recess?

A local shop to me had them in stock but it has no inner (nut protection) lining....

All a bit Heath Robinson, but I am taking wheels on and off at the moment & I have just wrapped some insulating tape around the outside of the OEM wheel brace to avoid damaging the nut recess on the wheels.

Nuts remain uprotected, but so far so good.

Think the insert only protects the end of the nut, however mine have been on and off a few times and no scratches.

Thanks Simon, I noticed the rubber protector at the bottom of the socket, like a plug socket, which as you say to protects the end of the nut.
Not sure that one exists that protects the sides of the nut then.

Would be very difficult to find a material to line the socket which is soft enough to protect the nuts but hard enough to handle the torque of undoing them. I have been a mechanic for over 20 years and i have never seen one, doesnt mean they dont exist of course.

95+ wheels are indeed 19mm.....glad you pointed out that the later ones are 17mm.

Well I'm a modest guy,I have smaller nuts!! Mine were the ones that came with the wheels....Can anyone else with 02+ wheels confirm the size of their wheel nuts? Preferably someone with an 02+ car.
