My abs modulator solendoid packed up about a couple of weeks ago so went to honda for a price - part is listed but you have to buy the complete unit 2k + vat. However, I am pretty sure they will be unavailable. Mark checked and told me that there is only 1 in the whole of the USA. I found a one secondhand and rebuilt mine unsing DAN's procedure.

I would endose DAN's advise and get your brake fluid changed regularly as a sticking solenoid eventually burns out. Over the next few I will examine the old one and let you know exactly why it packed up.

When I dismatled the ABS modulator I noticed corrosion around the base of the solenoids, I would suggest a good squirt of WD40 around the abs modulator avoiding rubber hoses.

Over here the monulator is around $500 and change, US. It's a part that will go off if you don't change your fluid every couple of years. I know from experience.

Guys,

My 'X' now have a rapid clicking sound which seems to be arising near the brake pedal area. I have read up on NSX Prime that this can be related to a sticking solenoid and that harsh breaking to activate the ABS can sometimes rectify it (?temporarily). The clicking sound last just a few seconds ?2-3. Any advice on here to avoid an expensive replacement.

I had the same thing last year. This was followed by pedal feedback when braking at low speed then ABS and TCS light on and no clicking. Turned out to be the front nearside abs sensor.
Sorry, that's no help is it.

Cheers,

James.

Had both front wheel sensor changed 6 months ago so can't blame that.

Thanks anyway.

My ABS has definitely gone. Just put on new brake disc and pads and I can lock the front wheel easily and skid with no ABS activation!!

Apart from going to Honda for it to be diagnosed, is there any other place that maybe able to help?

All sensible advice welcome.

how muach did these sensors cost? As my ABS is non-existent, I'll neeed to try and figure you the problem, and I think that the sensors maybe the best place to start.

Hi

The best and really only place to start on an NSX is by downloading the diagnostic codes - if you are not sure - go to Honda and get them to down load the code for you and then have a think about what your next step is. The NSX has a computer system which measures and checks the status of all its major components and sensors - and so you MUST down load the code first or else you could easily be replacing things that are OK. As a rule of thumb dont expect simple solutions to any car which is over 8 years old.

Hi Cas,

yeah you're right, it would be the best way. The way i'm looking at it though, is that my car is a 1991, and therefore all these wee bits and pieces will need replaced, if not right now, but pretty soon.

As for my TCS and ABS, i think it sould be teh sesors and it was in a front end prang befoe got it, and I'm slowly getting all teh systems back on line.

Cheers
Jim

PS how do you get/read fault codes??

Hi guys, do not go to Honda if you can avoid it as they will charge you at least an hour for diagnosing it, try a specialist Auto ABS Electrician in your Yellow or Thompsons pages. I had my changed by Honda on my old Prelude, they diagnosed it first (charged an hour & half or quarter), then the fitted the part, which was I think £180 squid or so for one! Hate to think what the X may be , maybe asked the specialist to see if the same sensor part also fitted the Legend, prelude or other Hondas or even the Rover 800? ;) :D

Jim, regarding the codes/error numbers, will Simon have these as he seems to have the infamous technician manual CD for the X ? Also think theres another thread for reading other error codes, where someone brought a code reader from China!?! If you read my other reply, maybe the Auto Electrician ABS specialist will be able to do it, but won't charge Honda prices.

If it is the cd manual from prime, I have it too, (on disk and printed out).
ooooo that's an idea, will start new thread in Japfest section, but would anyone going like a copy, I could burn some onto disks and bring them with me.

Not necessary, do a quick search for som old posts on here or even Prime. All you need is a paperclip to short the terminals out in a plug found under your glove box, then count the flashes of the CEL (?) on your dash. Not had to do it myself, but has been posted on here and Prime plenty...

Cheers, I'll have a hunt, don't want to short out the wrong plug!!, or I might get someone to show me at Japfest, as there is going to be a lot of knowledge floating about betwen all of us.

Thanks

Jim,

I got my set of front sensors from Hong Kong as my brother works here for around 150 squids. But Blue5 posted that he can get it from the USA for the same price or less. If you really need to, I can request another set from my bro. in HK but there will be a little wait for him to deliver them when he comes over.

Unfortunately can't attend Japfest but would it be possible to meet up when you are more local for me to check out your new gauge? Have you worked out how to illuminate the needles?

SS,
Thanks for the offer, I have no idea if it is the sensors or not, and as soon as I can get round to checking them I'l let you know. Time scale is not a problem as I have to do all the work in my spare time anyway, and I've done without ABS/TCS since geting the car, so another wait won't kill me.

ANYWAY going of topic and back onto the new gauges, yes I have found a way to illuminate the needles. On top of the dash pod there are 2 small white bulbs covered with an orange filter that helps to illuninate the needles (as they are not lit internaly) I tried with this in place, didn't look good, so removed orange filter, white too bright, even on most dimmed level. So by removing them completely and replaceing with 2 UV LED's the needlde glow bright orange, and the UV doesn't really affect the rest of the dials. I have only tested this and not fullt installed the UV, but it works and that's what I'll be doing with my next spare 10 mins.

No problemo, I'll add you to the list in the other thread.
Hong Kong eh? That was on my list of places I would have liked a posting, pity they shut it down.

Yep that's it! Well I did get 3yrs in Cyprus out of them, and I guess either later this year or sometime next year, I'll be going somewhere else hot and sunny!

Well I'm very envious, anywhere you prefer that still has the UK troops connection? Maybe you & Leigh should hire out your Xs since you are both international Jet setters!? But then again when your back, the feeling of firing her up & going for a precious drive would mean alot more special ! :D

Well there isn't a lot of overseas posting left, and I was one day too late to apply for one that came up in Ramstein in Germany. Probably the ultimate petrolheads posting, as it is less than an hour away from THE Ring?

Oh now how class would that be, hitting Nurburgring ever weekend??
(Although still planning to pay that place a visit in the X sometime)

Wow the RING nearby ! You might even see that sabeen or whats her name from TG who dads owns or runs a business there! She probably over take people in their supercars in a transit van ! Also you can max the X on the autobahns, with Germany's cooler conditions & straight motorways, then you can legally see what the X's true top speed is! Don't forget, no air con, fold ur mirrors in, no stereo so the ariel is down, pop up lights down in the day, minimum petrol loads, increase tyre pressures & foot to the floor!

Well as I said, I missed that opportunity, but yeah that would have quite possibly been my ideal posting!

But still hope to go and have a wee play on an Autobahn sometime, Germany doesn't take that long to drive to, maybe do a wee european tour.

A wee European could be a great idea! Did I mention I went to the only place in the world, apart Germany's autobahns and maybe parts of Australia's outback roads, wheres theres no speed limits!? Was in the IOM a year & half ago, wow that was awesome, there are no limits once you leave the towns and when you go around the TT route, its an amazing experience! I would like to do it again in summer as went late summer the last time & it rained bar the first day we were there! Bugger! All the roads have arrow signs & straw bales, so you can prepare ahead, only problems were theres no cat eyes up the mountains roads at night as these can throw a TT bike off in damp conditions and the weather changes so quickly since its location in the middle of the Irish sea! Whats scarey is that the TT lap record I think was done either in the last 2 yrs, was an average 129 or so mph !! over 37.7ish miles !! Think on some stretches, they reached 180's mph, holy poo! :o
