Well it's finally back with me! The refurbishment grew like Topsy but I'm glad that I got everything done!. Big thanks to Plans (Graham/ John) and CTS (Stuart/ Bernie) for sorting it out.

This is what I had done :-)

new clutch as the old one was slipping (the £300 one from ebay that several others very decently didn't bid against me on)

while the gearbox was out, sent it off to CTS to replace upper transmission housing to prevent future snap ring issues (part £500 from Dali), and also fettle some bearings and 5th gear synchros which were grinding a bit - it's now perfect.

refurbished brake calipers and wheels

fitted new tyres (OEM A022's sourced from Dali, made end of 2004 acording to the side wall code so not that old and the last batch available I reckon). Too soon to really comment on the feel as they are bedding in but so far they feel good to me.

alignment

redid the previously badly resprayed wing, door and bonnet (with blending ended up as pretty much a front end repray which took care of the stone chips as well!)

---------------------------------------------------------------

I fitted a new bass amp yesterday (from Dirk) to replace the blown old one (fiddly as hell getting the enclosure apart!), so the stereo is now as it should be (still rubbish compared to the JBL OEM one in my 406 coupe mind!)

I previously replaced the 4 gas struts (Dali again), claybar'd it and polished it with Megiaur's 3 stage.

Still have to do the Gliptone leather thing on my driver's seat (and fit the iPOD adaptor), but that apart the car now looks and feels amazing.

So a big job sure, but absolutely worth it to see the NSX restored to its original condition.

And if anyone else has synchro problems (I believe that someone else reported graunching into 5th gear which was my symptom), I would thoroughly recommend getting CTS to look at your box (especially if you're having a clutch done) as it doesn't cost that much and you will be amazed at the difference, and of course you already know about Plans.

Now time to drive it!

Having seen it, it's certainly in a top condition. I'd probably feel too guilty to use it!

Robin, could you let me known who did you paint work on the car? Mine is in need of some attention but I've heard so many horror stories that I'd rather go on recommendation.

Cheers

NathanDitto this request, as I'm trying to decide on refresh to loose 8yrs of stone chips vs leaving as original and honest

Plans Motorsport (Dunsfold Aerodrome in Surrey nr Guildford, the Top Gear track!)

I agonsied about this as well (although as 3 panels had been repsprayed already I wasn't too fussed about redoing those, but did worry about refreshing original panels what with the fancy original paint technique)

To my eye however it looks very good.

Interesting, Kowalski also used them on his black NSX and the results looked very good, so thats two recomendations.

Nathan, didnt you use them for all your mechanical upgrades?

Thanks Robin.

Yes Paul, they fitted all my mods. Reminds me I must try and get down there sometime very soon to get the rear passenger side suspension sorted. Getting a clunking sound which has been there since it was fitted but seems to have got worse. Its just getting the time to get down there and someone to follow me and bring me back!

I'll have to get a quote for the paint work from them then.

They do it through a company called 355 coachworks based on the same site, they seem to have a very good relationship with them.

As you may guess with the name, they are actually Ferrari specialists. They have a variety of very impressive cars at any time, including 250 GTOs, Lamborghinis etc.

Our NSX has ever so slightly flared wheelarches which they did a great job on considering the aluminum is very brittle.

Rob yes I think I spotted your NSX at Plans when I was there before. VERY mean looking with the flared arches and bigger wheels - nice!

Sunday afternoon, kids asleep after a romp in the forest.

either watch the F1 preview on TV

or

sort out the leather on the NSX

No contest!

the Gliptone stuff really does work! My seat bolster was cracked and scuffed due to people leaning on it to get in and out of such a low car (inevitable I think), but after some dabs of black stain, and then a good rub over with the conditioner it is like new. I think provided your seats are not actually torn then this stuff can rescue pretty much anything. The conditioner can even get rid of the wear on the steering wheel and give it back the matt look.

Sorry no before and after photos but take my word for it, it really works.

Damn, I've run out of things to do to it now (oh yes drive it!)

Can you get Gliptone from halfords?

http://www.liquidleather.com

the system comprises a cleaner (which I didn't bother with, after all the leather is black!), then you dab on the dye (the 65ml bottle is plenty for touch ups) and then the conditioner.

For the dye, just generic black will do, you don't need a specific colour match

(PS no Halfords don't do it)
