View Full Version : Which O2 sensor to order?

Chiswick Honda have quoted £400 to replace an O2 sensor including best part of £200 for the part. They were very sniffy about fitting a part obtained from elsewhere.
I have found various US suppliers at much reduced prices, both generic 4 wire and with specific cable lengths and socket. Generic $46 and specific <$60 obviously + delivery and import duties.
My problem is terminology. The Honda (Croydon) diagnosis was 42.1 Bank 1 O2 sensor failure. I think this means front left when it comes to ordering the part but the non-NSX trained technician didn't seem 100% sure.
Should I order front left?
Is front left going to be a nightmare to fit?

the ntk 24172 has leads long enough to fit both positions (on a '92)
i replaced both on mine, just need the right 'crows foot' O2 sensor socket to make the job really simple. if not, a local garage will have the right tool!

The socket is about £5 from halfrauds, and fitting either sensor is straighforward.
I bought mine from the states it cost about 25% of the Uk price including delivery which too 5 days from placing the order. papalazaru has the details of the dealer i used, they are in florida.

you could hedge your bets and buy a pair of factory(ish) sensors for $143.70 (http://www.scienceofspeed.com/products/engine%5Fperformance%5Fproducts/NSX/NGK/NTK%5FO2%5FSensors/) or you could get a pair of extension wires for $25 (http://daliracing.com/v666-5/catalog/index_browse_part.cfm?focus=2219) so that even if you get the wrong one (or decide to get aftermarket headers later) you can be sure it will still reach.
hope that helps

I have bought one described as front left from a supplier who lists on eBay. $60 + postage. Let's hope I got the right one. It was $5 more than front right so it should have the longer cable. The manufacturer is PCK.
I'm going to take it to a garage up the road as I cannot believe the £200 quoted by Chiswick Honda to fit is justified, but we shall see. I hope that any half decent mechanic will be able to do it with difficulty.

fitting is seriously a piece of cake provided you have the car on a lift, as you'll need plenty of purchase on the spanner to get the old one out. a pre-soaking with duck oil or similar (coca cola is good for this) to loosen it off firts is recommended!
aside from the above it's as simple as removing the old one with a spanner and putting in the new one and unclipping/reclipping the loom plug into the socket.

Thanks for the advice. I'll pass on the tips as best I can without sounding like the TV character that keeps saying "You don't wanna do it like that".
I really cannot understand how that could be 2hrs labour at £89 + VAT per hour!
