Some of you might remember me banging on about wobbly handling at Japfest. Basically, rear steer / rocking unpredictably with throttle change or camber change. SOmetimes OK - Castle Combe! - sometimes downright dangerous, with perception of impending loss of control.

So went to dealer today. Oil leak from rusted oil cooler has damaged suspension bushes and thence rear beam / brackets. Diff also worn so clutches to be replaced.

Estimated cost : £6836 parts, £2100 labour.

Have PMd Dirk....

Anybody got any other ideas? The beam + 2 brackets are £1613+vat each!! Makes the OEM rear brakes (pads & discs L+R) at £125 seem pretty fair.

I don't have £9k spare......but I do have 2 kidneys

Ouch that's gotta hurt! You could try plans motorsport at least their labour will be cheaper.

Either, parts off the car that AMO is breaking up.

Or,

Remove beam and send to the US, for SoS to replace bushes with non-compliant ones.

http://www.scienceofspeed.com/products/suspension%5Fperformance%5Fproducts/NSX/ScienceofSpeed/non%2Dcompliance/rear%5Fbeam/

This is only $500. I also can't believe this can't be done in the UK, by a competant mechanic or engineering firm. Not Honda dealer as they only like to replace parts. In which case just get the bushes.

(Mmm non-compliant bushes, I wouldn't mind having those:))

What are the brackets that have gone?

Not at £59 plus VAT its not.
Dealer rate at least if not more.

Sorry to hear of the impending wallet lightening news.
I don't understand how oil can be responsible for so much damage??

Anyway I think we all know of a certain silver car being broken for parts which may help you:rolleyes:

Good luck in your quest for an economic solution

Yes, my dealer only £47/hr, although Plans might be more experienced/quicker.

Hi Graham,

Sorry to hear about this. As Kevin has said contact Amo on the parts and consider upgrading via the SOS route. I would be willing to fit bushes to the beam and have access to most machining tools if need be. I will be at knockhill BSB in a few weeks, could take a look if you can get to the track?

I am interested as to what brackets are knackered, I take it through excess play?

Kevin,

Saw this on SoS earlier & wondered about doing this. Looks like they need the old one in exchange, & I'm not clear if mine is actually damaged. The parts listed as needed (amongst many other more sundry ones) are:

Beam assy. RR
Bracket assy R. RR beam
Bracket assy L. RR beam

and each of these 3 is listed at £1613.05

I think I need to clarify whether the components themselves are damaged, or whether it's the bushes alone. As you say, that would clear about 5.5k costs, although the labour would go up.

Not sure that using high-stress parts 2nd hand the way to go? And although my dealer quite happy to fit non-OEM bits, don't think they'd be so happy with used. (No disrespect to the quality of Simon/Amo's bits!)

I would be willing to bet that even if the bores are worn through they can be machined and inserts put in. I guess it depends on exactly where the damage is. Don't be blinded by dealers, most of them are going to replace an entire unit rather than 'fix' anything. Safety obviously comes first but wear should not affect the performance of the actual casting?

These are the parts in question.

Beam 1.

Bracket 4, and it's opposite.

I agree with reg and others, and would highly recommend a second opinion from a specialist, at £9K it will be worth spending time doing a good bit of research.
Paul.

The dealer is probably doing the 'replace everything until we fix it' approach. On the face of it I can't see how the nearside bracket needs replacing because of a problem on the other side of the car.

I'll look under my car tonight and see what bushes are in the rear beam. From memory I think the only thing would be the toe control arm. The bushes for the lower suspension arm are located in the side brackets, but they must deal with more stress from the suspension moving up and down than what would of been introduced by the toe arm being loose.

Unless all your bushes are just generally worn out or perished?

There's a guy named 'TitaniumDave' on NSXPRIME, who makes rose-joint replacments for all bushes in the suspension (No need to ask why I know that!). So if Honda don't make replacement bushes for the lower wishbone, there may be alternatives. The bushes for the upper wishbone are in the wishbone itself.

Plans have made ours 'non-compliance' by rose bushing everything. I would ask for their advice personally, i wouldn't claim to have a clue myself.

Also bear in mind it is probably cheaper to buy Honda parts in the US and ship them over than pay UK prices. SoS can give advice on this.

Yes, the feeling is that there's a fair bit of wear in all bushes, over & above the ones completely knackered.

Hmm. Will firstly call the dealer to see if SOS's non-compliance replacement would do. If not, might give Plans a ring, although it's a long way to trailer the car down...

Is rose-jointing a practical proposition for the daily "street" car?

So the dealer is going to replace the casting and bushes because the bushes are worn, I wish my Company could print money like this . Typical of the disposable society we live in.

Have just asked dealer to look at SoS website, the head tech agrees it's a hideous amount to pay!

It would seem the castings are fine....

...so have emailed SoS to see if they can re-bush the brackets as well as the beam. Or, from those who have used them, would Plans do it? Obviously, the bushes themselves are not stock-available from Honda as they come pre-fitted in the arm:dunno:

Well, she's ready at Chatham's Honda now...

...and my first task is to catch this evening's ferry to IJmuiden, for a nice long drive to Burgundy. Talk about cutting it fine - hope she's working!

Will lost the very gory details of the work done when I return

Well, she's back now.

Didn't get her to France - they couldn't free off then reattach adjuster bolts & needed a new one...2hours before I was to be in Newcastle for the ferry! So had to go in the FR-V :( which meant we could do lots of shopping

Got a £1000 discount from HUK on parts as well as a dealer 10% labour discount. Still £8500....had a good look when up on ramps and they were able to point out all the broken bits, didn't seem like much option after all. So have new subframe plus all bushes, rear discs, diff rebuild and 96K service for the money. Naturally, I could also have had a nice DC2 for that...

...but it does drive like new (well, it is new, at least at the rear) and I'm in love again :D
