View Full Version : Ouch, pricey tyres

Hi everyone, After 7 months of joyous NSX motoring I'd noticed my tyres were getting pretty close to illegal, so yesterday I got a full set of replacement Dunlops fitted on my 03 plus the wheel alignment sorted and it came to a smidge over £700 (150 each for the rears, 120 each for the fronts, plus lots of alignment settings). Ouch! I don't want that twice a year. I didn't think to ask how new the tyres were when I got the car, but I was wondering how many miles do people usually expect to get out of a set of tyres from new? I'd done about 7000 on the old set, is that good/bad/average? Cheers, Rich.

It all depends on driving style, but most people get at least 4K out of the rears.

Ok then, so 7K sounds quite good. I guess I'll have to reduce the number of miles I'm driving then instead :-)

I think Matt (TQO) got around 20k out of a set of Goodyear Eagle F1's with his driving Miss Daisy style.

Yup - but we all know mine will be the Y2K with the mechanics of a 2006 in 2010!

I got 23,000 from my front set and 20,000 from my rears to be precise! Mine are the 16 / 17 combo but paid £100 for the rears (expect to pay £200 next time though) and £70 each for the fronts. I would recommend the F1's, but I know they are not everyone's cup of tea, however Seninha has them on his OEM 17's and loves them too!

I love eagle F1's, hard wearing and good grip, had them on my BM. I'm just a bit pi***d off that I can't get them in 15" for my fronts..........I really need new wheels!!!

I have the F1s. 6k from the rear and 12k from the front. Just about to get my third set of rears and second set of fronts:eek:

Still only paid £320 + VAT for the whole set first time round 16/17 combo.

My dad's in the trade which helped a lot!

All depends on driving style. I agree rears 3 to 4 K only! & fronts bewteen double to triple that. I've got oem Dunlop SP8050 fronts, but are a very hard tyre, good for mileage, but would prefer softer. On oem Bridgestone RE010 rears, only got 2500 so far, may struggle to get to 4k! :( I think I will try the RE040 & RE050 combo next.

Guys what are the F1s like for sidewall stiffness? Bit squidgy? or does it make the car more predictable?

That's what I found so changed to the RE040/050 combination.

Bit squidgy?

That I do and largely thanx to Matts updates while I was looking for the rims. IIRC I paid around £560 inc alignment back to factory settings which is the more aggresive for tyre wear. That said, I've now covered over 5k miles on these tyres with only the fronts starting to show slight wear to the inner edge.

I cant say that I've noticed any 'squidgyness' compared to either the Bridgestones or Yoko I had previously. The F1 is also a quiet tyre due to its design and construction.

Found F1s to be a very good tyre on most cars.

Thing is, the NSX has it's 'specially developed' tyres but ultimately technology moves on. There are probably numerous tyres out there that are better, it's just finding ones that fit!

thanks simon. All the teg boys said the sidewalls were softer than Potz.

Feels awfull on astiff teg but on an X might be slightly diff. Ill prob stick to bridgies as always been good for dry attack work.
