Tyre advice for standard 16/17 combo on a 1996 NSX

Dear all

I know this topic has in all probability been covered before.

For a 1996 NSX with standard 16/17 combo, what are the tyre choices available to the NSX these days, and only where you can get the same brand/type for front as well as rear?

The most popular choices are:

GoodYears F1s GSD3s front & rear or maybe the brand new Aysmetrics, but rears only at present.

Bridgestones RE040 fronts & RE050 rears

OEMs, if you can get em!

Others that are ok are Toyo Proxy T1-Rs, but not as popular as the above two. Anymore out there guys n galls? :)

The person on here who sells tyres (can't remember his name) recommends Hankook R-S2 / K212 for the NSX, available in OEM sizes and much cheaper.

I have not tried these but if I didn't like the RE040 / 050 combination then these would have been next on my list to try.

I think you are referring to Tyreman (Robert of Redstar) who specialises in Hankooks.

hi all,
i am also looking for advice on tyre type and suppliers, my 2002 3.2 has dunlop sport 9000's on at present,rears are looking a little worse for ware !. standard 17" rims all round.

Yep... Looks like I'm going to need all 4's also... maybe we can get a group deal.. I saw a wholesale shop on Ebay that had the Goodyear GSD's for £100 each. bet if we went to a supplier with multiple orders we could save a bit.. ? then again we'd have all get the same tires.. having said that,, I'm not fussed as long as they are the best money can buy... keep me on the road...

I think with OEMs getting harder to source whether you have 94+ or 02+ alloys. As most people here have the 94+ 16/17s combo, not sure of the options for 17/17s, but Goodyears F1s GSD3 is one of the best options as very highly regarded, excellant in dry and especially in the wet, low tyre noise and long live compared to oems. Blackcircles are worth a try. HTH :)

I think this is a great idea, and I am up for 4 GSDs, 2 X 215/45/16 and 2 x 245/40/17.

You might also consider to go for the slightly bigger front tire size of 225/45/16, and combine with the slightly bigger rear of 255/40/17. In this way, you keep relative size difference between front and rear perfect.
I had these sizes on my '98 OE wheels too and as a bonus, with these sizes, your speedo (which normally is about 3-4mls too high) will be exactly giving the real speed. (checked with GPS)

Tirewise: the Goodyear GSD3 is good, Michelin Pilot Sport is also a nice choice (had these in sizes as described).
I personally would NEVER go with a B-brand like Hankook!

I've thought about upgrading rears to GY F1 GSD3s 255/40/17, but these are getting just as hard as oems to source now, not sure about 225/45/16 availability tho! :( So you can get 215/45/16 in GY F1 GSD3s? I know there available in 245/40/17s. I agree Hankook not really suitable for a super car like the X! :)

Whilst waiting for my other wheels to arrive from Japan, I had to MOT my NSX and replace the tyres. I went with cheap Avons and they are not that bad. I think it is more to do with the compounds than the tyre brand. After all don't they have certain standards for them to meet.

My car has oem Dunlop 8070 allround, fronts are quite good but rears have only about 1500miles left in them.. Cannot get oem replacements. Do I replace them with Dunlops of any type or change to another brand on the rear?

Mate I think that is what the Avons are. I had avons on the Landcruiser and they outperformed the Michelins so I figure they will do as a stopgap tyre. Now if I was keeping the OEM set up I will buy them again, specially for a winter tyre.

The new wheels are just Volks TE-37s but they are still not here so they might end up in storage if I decide to sell the car.

ATM I am thinking that it will cost so much to do the full 02 plus R conversion ( cosmetic only ) that I might as well cut my losases and start with an 02 plus.

Still not sure.

Hankook are now actually fitted to some new cars as OEM.

I have been running Hankook's on my prelude for a couple of years now and I rate them quite highly. Certainly would preffer them over Avons anyday of the week. ;)

As for Toyo's I use them on my track car and they are brilliant and I will probably try them on my X when my current set of pirelli's (Not a fan) expire.

But have to agree with the masses and say that goodyear F1's are probably the best tyre currently on the market in nearly any size.

The thing is the performance of the same tyre pattern in different sizes can vary greatly so what might be good on one car might not suit another... :)

Strange, Avons are the only thing that goes near my Prelude ??
ZV1's when it was on 15's, ZZ3's now it's on 17's.

That car really takes some battering and I can usually get around 20k miles out of the fronts, more out of the rears. Horses for courses and all that.

Have to agree about the Michelin Pilot Sports - I have had them all round on my X for more than 3 years.

Now that they don't do them in NSX front 16" size anymore, I am going to be a sheep and go with the consensus regarding the Goodyear GSD3 F1 the next time I am tyre-shopping.

I am also searching for a pair of 215/45/16 tyres.
I have search the net and the only tyres are the BS 040 and Yoko A048a!!
The BS 040's doesn't have such a good review on the tyre test so a little put off in getting those.

They don't seem to make them in GYE F1 GS D3 or Toyo T1R!!!:no::(:(

I am considering upgsize to 225/45/16 or is it better with 225/40/16 where there are plenty to choose from if further search is fruitless.

Any comments on this move?

Kare, Simon has the RE040 fronts and rates them well, even though some write ups are not that great. I've read that if you upgrade to 225 45 16 fronts, then with non PAS, they will be a struggle when moving slowly or parking, unless you want pop eye biceps! But also heard they rob the car of its nimbleness too going up a size? HTH
