Spare wheel bracket [Archive]

Can someone tell me what the rubber end caps are for on the cross member of the bracket for the spare wheel.

(Dumb question number 2)

to stop the spare rubbing against the metal and scratching/wearing the paint ... if you want, take them off and send them to me, i have one missing!

I am sure it can't be that much from HUK. Other than that try a section from a bike's inner tube, pipe insulation or glue some rubber strip.

Better yet, leave it out!

Ary, when you say leave it out, you mean you don't bother leaving the spare in the car for weight saving or you put it in the boot? If you remove it from the front, does it affect the front balance? I know the NA2 02+ front is lighter as fixed headlights are lighter than the pop ups since no motors.

I take it out completely and have not found any ill effects. I have removed a lot of weight from the back, but in the R it was fine as well.

In all honestly most of these tyres are very old and will probably be false security.

I have RAC and fingers crossed I won't need them. :)

So how much weight you save removing the spare wheel and bracket? Maybe as you don't carry the spare, the big electric pump in the tool kit in the boot too? 10 kgs? Ary, what else can you remove from the back? Theres only the tool kits and CD changer?

Spare Tire/Wheel 29.4 # from the front but I added the chassis bars whilst removing one front tow hook cover ( quite heavy ) so I probably lost 30 # from the front.

Entire Tool Kit =15 #

Exhaust manifolds, and pipes to cats 32.5 # replace with headers around 25 # = -10 #

Cats 22 # replace with test pipes around 6 # = - 16

OEM Exhaust 44 # replace with Ti GT Rom 13.5 # = - 30.5 #

Engine cover = 15 #

So that is 86.5 # from the back.

So far 115.5 # lighter without much effort.

I will also add the NSX-R cover and TE-37s ( 17" ) so that is bound to cause some weight changes.

I take it your weights are in lbs?

2.2lbs to a kg so 115lbs is about 50kgs. Good job!

IMO spare wheel and tool kit has to go - you couldn;t ask for a much easier way to save weight!

Regards running without the spare, make sure you check the small print of your recovery company. I wondered what would happen if the Atom suffered a puncture so I had a look. The booklet says that with regards to punctures cars not designed to carry a spare or appropriate repair kit will be treated individually "on merit". That gives me a warm fuzzy feeling that I'm covered at 1am in winter....not! Now I carry 2 cans of the gungy stuff to prove I can deal with all but a serious puncture/blowout.
From this, my interpretation would be they expect cars designed for spares to be carrying them and will assist changing them, but flat-bedding you home??

If you are running without a spare then make sure that you do have the puncture repair gunge. £600 for a tow off a motorway is a little expensive to save you 25kgs of weight on the car.

Most breakdown policies state that you need a spare or means of repairing a puncture, alternatively policy is void.

So that is 86.5 # from the back. So far 115.5 # lighter without much effort.

I guess I should do a similar exercise someday soon ...
