Auto Gearbox Problem

I've had 3 problem-free years since owning my Auto on a 94 plate. I've just returned to my house, closely followed by an AA van. I had to call him out after all power was lost to the drive. Previously to that, I was experiencing a wheezing/whistling sound from the engine. After 30 minutes of engine cool-down the car was able to move but I limped home with Mr AA.

Can anyone advise. Mr AA said there are specialist companies that deal with gearboxes. Does anyone know of any in the south Wales area? Is this going to be a complete gearbox change.

It sounds to me like it could be a torque converter problem? Old fluid?

Overheating from old fluid and stop and go driving?

Any of it sounds familiar?

If I was running an auto NSX my first port of call would be to Britlude. His is a daily driver and he is very helpful. He may be able to start you off in the right direction.

i was thinking if it was a mechanical or a ECU problem... if the auto control box goes into a sulk for whatever reason the software can go into limp mode and you only get drive in 2nd and 3rd... (1st and D don't light up on the dash even it the shifter is in those positions) and the first you notice it is that it's a bit sluggish pulling away in 3rd!!!!

mine did this and basically needed the connecter to the auto ECU unplugging and cleaning, and plugging in again! a dirty connector plug to the ECU causes all manner of weirdness!!!! definately worth a try!

having said that... i take it the wheezing and whistling was connected with the trans, or was it just coincidental that possibly the coolant tank was singing to you?

Thank you for you direction and advice. Your messages give me an excellent starting point to delve further. I'm relieved to learn (Fingers crossed) it's not a gearbox change.

Britlude - Although I had no drive after placing it in any gear, it would still indicate on the dash. When it first occurred, I placed it in 3rd but that failed after 200 yards. The same hapened in second for half a mile. And it did'nt want to know in 1st gear. Typically, when mr AA man came, it worked fine but I had to limp home.

AR - Yes, I have an NSX Plate but original wheels.

the usual fault with all auto tansmissions in all types of car is blocked filters. unfortunately in the nsx it's internal and not easily accessable...

has it had a trans fluid change recently? might be an idea to 'rinse' it a couple of times see if that helps. (drain and fill with fresh fluid, run around for a while, then change it again)

Hmmm - it may well be quite simple...but I had similar prob a few years back with a BMW 530d - involved a rebuild 'cos clutch plate had "disintegrated" - about £2.5k :angry:

I received a call today from my local friendly mechanic (who loves to pamper my car - great stuff). He informs me that he's changed the gear oil twice. And after road testing (twice), the car loses it's drive after 10 miles. But once cooled down, is ready to go again.
Because the filter is internal, he has put me in touch with another local company that specialise in transmissions. Just pre-empting at the moment, if it's not the filter, what else could it be? could it be something to do with the bands?
