View Full Version : Looking for an NSX and saying hello

Hello,
I am on the lookout for a Honda NSX. It may take a little time as I'n not sure how much to spend on which type of model. For example should I spend around 16k for an early model or late 20's early 30's for a newer model. I think I missed out on Bazza's Type R which looks amazing IMO. I saw it on the DC5 forum and drooled a bit.
I originally come from an s2000 background, A few years ago I bought one and had a great time with the Honda F20 engine, I even ended up buying a Hardtop from a member here by that goes by the the name of simonprelude :).
After a year and a half of the S2000 I decided to go for a Integra Type R DC5. I never thought I would go back to a FWD car but the DC5 certainly is an eye opener. Coupled with a Gruppe M intake, The noise from the bonnet was phenominal.
Last month I got the itch and decided to sell the DC5, I'm still holding back the tears :rolleyes: but I'm on the hunt for a new car. I decided on a NSX as I've always wanted one so what better place to come and do some research before I plunge in.
Any way just saying Hi before I hit the FAQ's

How's it going, I've still got my NSX, and even more so the S2000 now with Mugen Hardtop if you hadn't seen it on S2ki.
What do you want the car for. (NA1 better for serious mods, any for basic changes)
Any need for a Targa (Tintops since the S2000 so I guess not)
Budget
Condition (pay less for an abused car)
Most importantly, colour :)
If I were looking again I would be seriously tempted to try and get a Type S / R from Japan. It will cost, but be worth it in the long run.
You have just missed a car that has been rebuilt, and if the standard was as good as the owner said it was a bit of a bargain.

Did you end up with Shipleys HT? I saw his car was sold the other day so I presumed an S2ki member had snapped his arm off for it. How is the supercharger going?
With regards to an NSX. I have around 20k to spend but really not sure what I want yet. I probably wouldnt go for a Targa, The car must be a manual and any colour other then silver. The S2000 and DC5 were both silver so its definitely time for a change. Lastly the condition should be reasonably clean with corrosion, worn seat bolsters etc.
I've decided to be patient on this one and may well look into importing. The only issue here would be CO2 figures as Alistair Darling will likely to want to shaft me for taxing it as it falls into Band G.

The fresh imprt route could be an issue if it's given a CO2 figure, however a pre 1998 car would just have an MOT and not an SVA so I'm not sure where the DVLA would get a CO2 figure from.
£20k should get you a good early UK car, there's a couple for sale on here that I would be looking at first before going anywhere else. (Hint Hint Steveycaz)
But that all depends on whether you want a good clean early car, or take a punt on a later car that might not be as clean as the one above.
Bargains do come up for sale now and again, there was a Silver 3.2 sold last year within about an hour, then it was re-listed for around £7k more the next day.
The Red one on autotrader for sale near me is an Import at a UK price, so that would be a no go, just in case you were looking at that one.

I've been looking on PistonHeads and Autotrader but I am being patient. I came across a website a couple of days ago listing some Type S and R's for sale in Japan. They looked very tempting but I'm prepared to be patient.

Hmmm... unless you want the more consistantly spaced (better?) JDM gearing that didn't appear on UK 5spd cars until the 1996 MY. Quite a few people hanker after this and indeed have changed the internal ratios to the JDM ones.

Indeed, looks nice but I'm still in the knowledge-gathering-stage. Their are some fantastic examples on this forum.

Hi pal good luck with it, i did the same as you. Went from DC5 to NSX (NA1)
I got a 96 NA1 in yellow, manual with black roof. Such a great car, effortless in what it did. The power delivery fantastic, brakes so spot on. To own is to own one of the greats, so well engineered. I sold mine cos of cash issues but had it a year and loved it, will gladly go back in the future but would like suspension mods and zorst etc..
Type R would be perfect but so expensive dammit!

Thanks guys. There is a 2004 stolen recovered track car on ebay at the moment. 5300 miles apparently on the clock. Looks like the car has been restored but who knows to what level of quality.

The last pic shows the condition that the car was picked up at auction in - it was blue and white then.
If mint it is probably worth 40k... with the history and now back together maybe a bargain at 25k? The interior is from a 3.0 car so not quite a replacement but looks to sit inn there well enough.
Someone's spent a lot of time and money putting that back together and will likely be heavily rewarded when it sells.

I disagree, history, originality and condition all kind of depend on each other. I don't think that car's worth any more than 18K.

I agree.It was more of a bargain when it was a striped out track car for 11K.
