Just got some info from my insurers that by law your vehicle has to be on the MID system and if its not you could face a fine. You can check if your vehicle is on the MID system here:

If its not you should put in a call to your insurer and ask for details of how to do this.

Not entirely sure what it means as I have a company fleet policy and didnt read all the info and one of my managers dealt with it, but he told me its a must that your vehicle is on the mid database and there can be fines by the police or other for it not being on it.
Found this and possible a few google searches might give more info Simon.

From what our insurer told us, It doesnt mater if you have private insurance/company or traders insurace! If your car is not on the MID system then you must inform your insurer and ask how to get it on there. You can check if your car is on or not by clicking the link in the first post.

hmm, for private car insurance the insurance co. is supposed to put it on, (MID front page says this) as far as i can tell it's what the ANPR checks against. if it's not on MID it'll flag up at the roadside, but if you have a cover note/ insurance cert then there's not a problem.
the MID front page 'warning' says all doom and gloom, IF you can't provide proof of insurance. MID isn't proof of insurance, your insurance certificate is! but of course, computer systems are infallible!!!
