My beloved NSX has let me down for the first time in 3 years...

I have stopped using the car everyday to reduce the miles I was clocking up. Up till now I was using it around once a month.

I have kept her underwraps on my drive with a solar panel connected to the battery......that was crap as when I went to start her the battery was as dead as a very dead thing...

Anyway ended up with a new battery, bolted it on and.....she won't turn over. All the lights work and I can hear the solonoid and a relay clicking but not even a slow turnover..

She's a manual and in neutral, clutch in....

Any ideas? Things to try?

As always any help greatly appreciated.

If the starter solenoid is clicking when you turn the key then it still sounds like there's not enough oomf getting to the starter. If you're positive (no pun intended) that the new battery is a goodun and is fully charged, check the battery connections again and also the connection at the starter end.

Yes the battery is a brand new one direct from Halfords and identical to the one it replaced. I'll check the connections again in the morning, fingers crossed!

I am not very technically minded but someone told me that batteries from shops are not always fully charged. It was something about health and safety....before they used to fill the batteries with acid before you buy...but now they are delivered to the shop with acid already in....if the battery has been sitting on the shelf for quite along time then it may not be fully charged.

This happened to my BMW when i got a new battery and it died on my car. I charged it since and has been working properly....(touchwood) :)

I hope it just the battery you need to charge :)

Hi

My NSX is used occasionally. Recently after a 3 week stay in the garage it would not turn over despite the battery being filly charged. There was a slight click and the dashboard lights dimmed when I tried. I put it into gear and rocked it back and forth in case the starter motor was stuck and then it started up immediately.

Hope your problem is similarly simple.

Hi, starchaser.

There are several things that can be tesetd for the starter system but I think I would start from the easiest one.

As Mark stated, I presume that your new battery is fully charged.

Do you have OEM security system or aftermarket one?
After you connected the new battery, did you arm and disable the security system with your key hob at least once?

When the battery went flat, it would trigger the starter disable circuit.
Once the security system was triggered, there is a certain time-out period which will stop the hone/light flashing. Eventually, it'll even drain out the internal battery of security system.

If this was not the case, then we can look into the voltage at the starter relay and check for the sticky starter.
Main relay and ECU are on the other side of the system so even if you have a problem on these, you can still crank the engine.

Again, even your lights, radio, hone, etc worked, it doesn't mean that it has enough current to turn the starter. You will be amased how much current is required to crank the engine....

One more (probably outside) possibility - I had this many years ago on an Escort (clicking solenoid, no action from the starter motor) & it turrend out to be a poor earth connection.

easy way to see the condition of the battery... turn on your head lights and try to start the car. if the battery is flat then the solenoid will click/ buzz/ do nothing and the headlights will dim to almost nothing... at least you'll know if it's the battery, or something in the starter circuit...

For the record, I've just had exactly the same issue: Lights and everything else seem to work fine, but when you try and start the car you just hear clicking from behind your ear and the engine doesn't even try to turn over. The car had been left for 10 days without being started.

Turns out it was a lack of charge in the battery. One swift jump start later and all is fine for now. It's been left for longer than that before though without any problems, I'm wondering if it's a sign that the battery needs replacing?

Or get a trickle charger if you have a garage! :) Mines a Draper think about 15 quid, no problems in 3 years & plenty of top upped juice in the bat as volt meter always at 14+ when firing up!

You hit the nail on the head. I had the battery connections tested and there was apparently "noise" on the connections. It turned out that the earth clamp was making poor contact with the battery post (even though it was tight) . I replaced the clamp and she started first time Hurrah!!!
