Well I finally took the NSX out over the past few days, as the weather has been nice, dry and crisp for a change.

But I noticed today, [being a particularly cold day of just 1° c] that while driving the engine temp display would drop down almost to the bottom line. The when stopped it would clime again. I'm thinking this must be a thermostat problem as everything else is working fine, got heat from the vents, coolant tank has plenty of water no leaks and so on.

Should I order a new replacement anyway? and if so is there any better options other that OEM?

This is a common problem on NSXs and I think costs about £70 ioncluding parts and labourt to get Honda to fix it.

Happened to me last year and she heats up just fine now:) I did some researcvh into spoon ones etc and went OEM. I think there're OEM ones on ebay if you want to save a few extra quid.

Cheers,

Luke

Thanks Luke!

Just had a quick look on Prime and yeah noticed its one of those common faults. Mine was going fine but this cold day seems to have affected it more.

I can do the job myself no problem and noticed the spoon/arc and mugen thermostates. But seen this one on ebay

Not sure if thats OEM though as it states Mitsubishi.

That seems expensive for a thermstat?

I think the OEM PN is 19301-P8E-A10....

Does it!! I actually thought that was quite cheap as the Mugen/Spoon etc are £50++

Seems to be 2 listed on the parts system

THERMOSTAT (NIPPON THERMOSTAT) 19300-PR7-A01
THERMOSTAT (FUJI SEIKO) 19300-PR7-A02

Possibly one has super ceded the other

Hi, Sudesh.

Yes, it's a quite common fault and unless you are using a special radiator, it's best to stay with OEM thermostat.

19301-P8E-A10 Thermostat Assy (inc. rubber mounting) £34.85+VAT

Much cheaper in US or Japan (about $25 or JPY2,678 + postage & tax) but with the weak £ against $ or Japanese Yen, not sure about the balance between the potential saving and your urgency.

Happy working on the cooling system during the cold winter (from my experience).

Kaz

Hi Kaz,

Looks like the part number you and NSXCB have posted is newer again than the ones I found.

Does it mention a desciption/make of that thermostat in your parts book?

The price you quoted would make the ebay one seem like a bargin, but just not sure if its OEM.

I emailed the seller for more info.

Hi, Sudesh.

The part no. used to be as 19301-PR7-305 (Fuji) or 19301-PR7-306 (Nippon Thermostat) but now it is superseded to 19301-P8E-A10.

Top one is the P8E model and bottom one is the original design.

Hi, Sudesh.

More photos for you. May be you can ask the ebay shop to compare their product with these photos?47994800

There is a marking on the flange as [NTCL] and [78C] so it is manufactured by Nippon Thermostat Company Ltd. and the opening temperature is 78degC.

Please note that the OEM one will come with the rubber mounting Oring which you will need during the installation process.4801

sudesh uve got me thinking. my car seems to take quite a wile to come up to normal working temperature, i wondering if the stat isnt closing.it may have to heat up all of the cooling system..
my prelude would be at temperature in a couple of miles if that.

guys how long would it take (roughly) driving at 60mph

thanks

Shane the NSX takes a quite a while to heat up anyway, from what I read usually 10 or so mins.

My car has been fine, its just the very cold weather at the moment thats affecting the temperatue and only while driving at 50mph and above. Once my car is at stand still or below 50 the temp rise again.

Shane - At 70mph my car takes about 40 seconds to warm up in second and 5 minutes in third... for a quick warm up try to keep the car at 8400 RPM just on the limiter;) I'd say between 5 and 10 minutes to warm depending on how cold it is out.

Sudesh - When my thermostat went the car would cool itself down and I'd see the needle drop when cruising at 50 or below, it would also take forever to heat up. I guess this meant the gate was stuck open so the engine was constantly being cooled.

You're seeing the opposite to this! Cooling at higher speeds so I've no idea what's going on!

Whilst on the note of warming up - you should wait for a few minutes after the water temperature is correct before the oil temperature is heated up enough. The NSX should have a separate guage really, me dunno why Honda left taht out!?
