Nsx-r style carpet

I'm planning on dying my NSX carpet to black to mimic the NSX-R one. I found what seems to be a great product on ebay and will most likely start the process this weekend. Has anyone else ever gone down this route? or any thoughts? There really isnt much to the NSX carpet, from memory its only 2 bits either side.

Easier to spray paint it! Sounds strange but works really well and doesn't cost a lot either. Many of the cars i sell have either black or grey mats (many no longer available to buy either) and after cleaning them with the steam cleaner i'll thouroughly dry them out and give them several light coats of spray paint. Mask up the logos on the mats and you've got a refurbed set for around 2 quid.........marvellous!!
Also works well on parcel shelves, boot carpets and car carpets :)

Black spray paint sounds ok but I prefer to use proper stuff.

Problem with spray paint is, it will make the carpet hardend and down the line if you brush against it you get white marks trough it and it becomes harder to clean etc.

The product I'm using is proper automotive carpet dye.

I'll let you know how my process goes, the Dye arrived today so I'm going to start removing the seats and carpet later tonite and hopefully start on the carpet at the weekend.

Good luck Sudesh, this is something I wish I'd done to my old carpet as the previous owner had spilt bleach in the passenger footwell. I just bought another set of carpets. . .

The dye comes in a 5L jar, you just pour the dye in a spray bottle and start the job! You can also use a sponge or paint brush to dab the carpet. It dries suprisingly quickly too! I'm well pleased with the result and the black carpet looks very well with my balck over mats.

Looks really well mate, and it's certainly something that I have considered, but was unsure what route to go down, the black carpet does look far better that the grey one.

Looks stunning Sudesh! Really impressive! In fact I'm going to order the same stuff . . . it might take me a few years to get round to actually dyeing the carpets but I will do it one day ;)

Thanks guys! It looks so much better in the flesh, those pics I took with my crap 2.0meg phone lol.

Minch it really is quite simple to do, a few hours and then an over nite to dry and job will be done.

The seats are really simple to take out, about 5mins either side. 4 bolts hold the seat in, under the seat there is a wire for the electrics which just unplugs and the seat belt is held in with one bolt to the side of frame. Just lift it out carefully and you have the whole floor in front of you!

I recommend gloves, work clothes and some white spirits to remove any bits that accidently get a wee touch of dye, its easy removed with white spirits. Oh! and good hover before you start!

I was just being extra careful but also I done that so there would be no possibility of a line of grey carpet showing once the job was finished.

I wouldnt say essential, but it does make the job easier as there is the fuse box door to spray which is best removed and also the corner bit that meets up to the fuse box door is attached to the side trim and the same applys to the drivers side but obviously no fuse box door there, its just one solid piece that comes out with the side trim.

Firt you remove the entry pads [the black leather/PVC bit] these just lift off, on the drivers side entry pad, first slide off the fuel release tab, it also slide off with a good tug. When removing the pads, dont grab the plastic bits at the front as its quite flimsy there, grab the leather/PVC bit and pull up.

Once you remove those on either side you will see 1 screw that holds the long black PVC runner in place, remove the srew.

On the passanger side, remove the fuse box door, behind the fuse box door you will find 2 screws that hold the the carpeted bit that is attached to the long black runner. Remove the screws. This bit is now free to remove.

On the drivers side: There are no screws in the same place as above, so first pull the carpet bit out to your left towards the accelerator to free it as its held in with plastic retainers, then you pull the carpet bit forward and it slides over the bonnet release catch. It can feel quite tight but with some cautious force it comes free no problem.

And thats those pieces removed!

If you do decide to go the same route, I'll send you my numebr and if you run into any problems I'll guide you through!

Looks good Sudesh! I can't believe how simple this job looks. Black does look good, but I prefer the grey OEM as it was intended as black with black seats are maybe too dark?

I must admit I do have a bit of a thing for OEM but I honestly don't think anyone would notice that it had been changed unless you had two NSX's side by side . . . all that would be noticed is that it looked "fresh" . . . imho

Yeah I would agree with both of you with OEM, but a black carpet was available on the NSX-R and NSX-S and possibly as and extra in Japan on standard models, so thats good enough for me!

Plus with all the amount of grey carpet that is visible I dont think it makes any difference to the darkness of the cabin.

If you think about it, if you have over mats; all thats visible is the side as you get in and the sides down by the centre console and a small bit behind the seat and on my NSX the passanger seat is always at the furthest back position and never moves so you dont even see tha carpet there lol!

I used about 2L of the container and that was me being really fussy lol! I dont think 2L is even needed on the NSX carpet.

It has dried perfect and I've since done the overmats on my girlfriend Hyundai Coupe and its turned out great on them also.

I'm not sure if it would take well to the boot carpet as it works best on porous surfaces. The boot mat is quite thin and there is no "real" carpet to it if you know what I mean.
On doing the interior you can either remove the mats which isn’t too big a job, hardest part is probably removing the centre console panel to get at the carpet supports/mounts which are screwed up inside the centre console.
What I did was mask off the parts of the interior and went from there. If doing it that way, keep a bottle of white spirits handy as it good for removing any bits you may get accidentally. If you take your time there should be no problems and also do it where its not windy.

Don't think I'll bother doin the boot....I had a spare carpet, so I was able to do it out of the car. Not done the tunnel sides yet, if they are difficult to remove as Sudesh points out, I'll mask it and paint on the car.

The boot carpet is slightly different and I'm not sure it will take as well as the interior carpet. I have a spare boot carpet too if you mess it up.:)
