View Full Version : Type S - Colour Choice

I've bought some Type S wheels for my car.
They are as light (if not lighter) than NSX-R wheels and being 16/17 should work nicely with my manual steering and standard suspension.

The wheels are in great shape (thanks Simon) but I don't think the very dark grey suits my car, so I'm going to get them painted. I'm leaning towards a light silver with a hint of metallic how they were offered in Japan.

Alternatively I could go for a gunmetal like the US Zanardi editions. I'm not sure these work with a black roof though.

Finally a flat grey colour might work.

At the moment I'm planning to keep the black and white BBS centres but my wheel guy is happy to paint them to match and then laquer over an H decal for me, if I change my mind.

Here are some pics. Please vote and all suggestions very gratefully received.

As they are

Standard Type S silver would make my car look like this

Black rims and get yourself an NSXR rear wing painted in black to match ;)

Simon and I did put his carbon wing on my car to see how it looked and it did look dramatically better.

Problem is then I'd end up on a never ending carbon fix - where do you stop? I like the simple OEM/JDM look

I went through the black wheel phase along with changing the rear spoiler and mirrors to black

But after some thought I decided to stay as OEM as possible as I'm on the 1992 to 1995 NSX-R route which didnt come with any of those changes so I stayed OEM.

For me I would go with either the silver or light grey colour. Would also look well lowered slightly

Have you! lol well hope it helps on making a choice.

Yeah if your going to stay on track with an OEM look Type-S then I would try a the red roof wrap, and if all looks good you can always opt for proper re-spray at a later date.

You're right. I've done lots of looking and have only found 1 red Type S

http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j135/gavinprint/rsm19732006-img600x450-1160314344p1.jpg

To be honest though I do like the red/black and was hoping I'd be happy with a nice classic look with a Type S twist. I just can't get on with black wheels on a red car. Gunmetal maybe.

Washi (Zanardi colour) is the way to go...

Option 1: Zinardi with roof and mirrors wrapped

Options 2: Bright silver (go for BMW M series finish) with Simon's spoiler then leave it alone

That BMW finish is called 'Chrome Shadow' It is notorious on BMW forums.
Made by applying a black powdercoat followed by an extremely thin (1 micron!) layer of silver, then a clear laquer.

The silver layer is so thin that it has to be done by robots and is virtually impossible to do by hand or match for repairs.

More info here
http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/e39-m5-e52-z8-discussion/36945-original-manufacturer-chrome-shadow-paint.html

Including the classic line from the head of BMW North America that the cure for kerb rash was buying a new wheel as a colour match is impossible - and you thought HUK could be awkward!

This is what I had in mind

It is a lovely bright, reflective finish that your wheel man should be able to replicate. IMO, this finish will work well on the BBS

They're also shadow chrome. I'll speak to my wheel man and see what the verdict is. I agree that it would look good on these wheels if we could get it right.

When I dropped mine off they didn't seem phased at all to replicate the BMW finish. I find out when I get them back. Was hoping to have them back and on for Japfest but given that I almost didn't get them in the first place I'll remain patient.

If I get the cal today then you can see them 2mrow. If not, its just a good excuse for another Bracknell meet :)

Unfortunately I won't be attending Japfest, however if you're going to have your wheels on I might come up to the services so have a look as its on the way to my (rainy!) BBQ destination. Let me know.

2. Lighter grey

Personally I'm not keen on chromish type BMW finish on the
NSX

Black roof and black wheels look great to me.

I'd say leave it as it is as the wheels are in great condition, if something were to happen to them then maybe reconsider but the black looks great on the red car.

James, this is probably a Zinardi as LHD and knowing the US they would have spec'd a differnt color code which could explain the bronze tint?

There were 51 Zanardis produced, all went to the US.

The bronze/grey colour change is a trick of the light. The two pics below are of the same car, on the same day.

The pics, including the one on track (Laguna Seca?) are of Science of Speeds former project car, Zanardi No.8

I'm not sure about the 2 tone bonnet myself but the window tint looks nasty. Just my opinion of course :)

Washi can look slightly Bronze in some pics but if mine are the orginal finish, and I believe they are, there really isn't any bronze in there. Take a look at mine on Nick's turntable, even with the light falling at different angles they don't ever go bronze'y... http://www.turnstudio.net/nsx2.html

This is under artificial light of course, the long shadows the in the pics posted by James and Gavin suggest a low setting sun which might cause the effect.

Well the wheels are painted, and fitted with new Bridgestones, and I've finally found the battery charger for my camera so here are the pics. Thanks to everyone for their contributions.

I've spent months contemplating the change and I'm very happy with the new look. With non power assisted steering there is very slightly more friction to overcome at parking speed but nothing too serious. I've yet to explore the new limits of the car at speed, or get a real feel for how the ride has changed.
