I'm working on an NSX at the moment for another member. After receiving the car last week I have been working on quite a few issues.
The car in question, 1996 Charlotte Green, Manual Targa

One of the first jobs was the antenna, its did not retract all the way and also was slightly bent.

I removed the antenna and dismantled it.
The internals were in bad condition and some of the teeth were rounded off.

There was slight damp in the boot and after inspecting the problem I found that small amounts of water were coming from the antenna outlet pipe as it was blocked up.

To spruce it up slightly I re-sprayed it, then added new grease and now the catch is working correctly.

This car had an aftermarket pioneer CD changer in the boot that was in my opinion poorly fitted.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j77/icongroup/EDsNSX/DSC00036.jpg
The wiring was tracked inside the rear wing of the car, and was moving freely and I could hear it rattling round, even when I closed the door, I could hear the wiring rattle; the wiring the appeared out in the engine bay.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j77/icongroup/EDsNSX/DSC00055.jpg

I followed the wiring through the firewall of the car, into the cabin and it ran up along the drivers side carpet.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j77/icongroup/EDsNSX/DSC00129.jpg
It then ran up under the dash and was bundled up behind the carpet.

I then traced the wires to where it was taking power and discovered that first; the CD system was wired in using an FM transmitter so the CD signal only passed through via the antenna. I then discovered where the system was wired into and was shocked to see how bad and more important dangerous this was.

From what you can see, the OEM wiring loom was sripped back in places and the CD wiring was just wound round the loom and left like that!! No masking tape in places, no solder, nothing. So after speaking to the owner we decided the best method was to remove everything and repair the damaged cable and secure it correctly.

At the same time as doing the repairs to the loom, I noticed more wiring issues. This time it was coming from the aftermarket alarm immobiliser system that was installed. First of all the system was not working correctly and the actual siren was not working.
Under the bonnet the siren was fixed badly and attached to the crusie control
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j77/icongroup/EDsNSX/DSC00130.jpg
The wiring was tracked poorly

The wiring went into the fuse box and bundled up in there.

http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j77/icongroup/EDsNSX/DSC00134.jpg
The wires continued into the cabin to the control box which was just laying freely in the cage.
I covered the control box in sound proofing, and then, bedded it in securely to the correct location and added extra sound proofing to stop it moving or ratteling round.

Like the CD changer the alarm was wired in a similar way, OEM loom cut and wires just twisted round, the track for the OEM wiring was also damaged and seated correctly.

I repaired all the cables, removed items that were not working and re-set the control unit so it now works correctly. The wiring was all tracked accordingly and the big block of fuses under the bonnet was removed and relocated to the correct place. For security reasons I'm not going to post the pics of that work.
Also while working on the alarm system, I found another old alarm system that was laying under the carpet and wasnt removed, with cut wires and bare ends.
But now under the hood looks the way it should:

After speaking to the owner about some more issues with the interior, he decided to go with a change of color. The tan carpets were quite bad with dirt and grime and I tried to clean it up first but it was a no go. So here is what I decided to do.
This car had the tan interior with tan carpets etc.
First step was to remove the seats and take out the carpet: I found quite a bit of dirt, sweets, pine needles, pet hair, stones, coins, pen and even a stanley knife under the carpet lol

Very impressed with the high standard of work there Sudesh. I am a little like this myself and will spend ages getting things just how they should be. Especially like the job on the carpets, look so much better in black.
That coolant hose is allegedly on its way to you but not had a tracking number yet so cant say exactly when it will land.

Thanks! Got some more things to add but its coming along nicely now.
After removing the calipers and stripping the paint etc; I started the process with a few coats of high temp primer, then I used a gold hammeite paint and finally a high temp lacquer.
The carpet turned out well, it took more dye than I thought due to the color, but the final look is fantastic. I also done the door speakers as they were scuffed and marked heavely. I removed the speaker covers and tried to clean them up but, they were too embedded with marks and grime. So I changed the door speaker covers to black which revived the whole look and in my opinion still looks great with the black and tan interior. I also had to change the foot well heater vents, to black, the interior fuse box cover, bonnet pull and other small item that would usually be tan on this combination.
Black and Tan - aye, a classic combo

Kaz a write up on the coolant system would be good as its such a long job and those hose clips if placed in a awkard position are hard to work with. I took some photos of the coolant job but photos dont show just how awkard a job this is.

So I sealed up the holes and took out the lights:

Its a DC Sports exhaust with 4" tail pipes.

Yeah Ary
The current owner and myself both agress that the previous owner did not look after this car correctly. The general history is good with the car but all the other things have been missed out. There are many other things I have inspected that need to be corrected also but its a huge improvement now from when it arrived. Going to fully detail the car too.

Sudesh, what degreasing product did you use and did you use a cloth or soft brush? Did you leave the degreaser overnight to let it soak & how did you soak down next day? I assume you didn't hose down especially with wiring & connections nearby?

I use Zymol Strike engine cleaner http://www.autoanything.com/car-care/69A3056A0A0.aspx
But any citric based cleaner is generally good. Some people dont leave it on overnite; but I prefer to do that as it gets better results. After that I use both, cloth and small brush and a hard brissle tooth brush.
To soak down I just use warm water and fairy liquid as it aids in de-greasing and cleaning at the same time.
the next steps will be a steam clean, then another clean down using WD40, and buffing it out, as if you leave it thick, it will only catch dirt and dust.

This car didnt have the factory CD player installed, the owner wanted a changer installed that would work with the OEM head unit so I chose an Alpine changer.
So I installed the OEM CD cable as this car didnt have one.

I installed the CD changer in a similar location as per the OEM changer and used to original mounting position with a few mods in behind to secure it. This changer is smaller than OEM so fitted quite nicely in position.

Everything displays correctly on the head unit and works as per OEM spec.

Its coming along nicely. Loved the interior makeover, not so keen on the gold calipers, personally think satin black would be more in keeping with the color of that NSX.
You could the owner one other little job if you have time .... rectify the Euro-Smile of the rear plate surround.
Having completed a number of the jobs you've done I know how satisfying the end results can be. Nice work and thanx for recording the process'

Thanks guys! Paul I didn’t have time to do the Euro smile, after doing all the coolant hoses and engine bay detail and under the bonnet detail, then had to do the body work, I didn’t have as much time I would have liked to do the body work as I wanted to do some paint correction at the same time.
But anyway, I started the process by washing down the car, I used slightly more concentrated detergent to get rid of allot of contaminants,

After that I chamois down the car and used a clay bar which is great at removing ground in dirt and other every day contaminants. When I finished the clay bar process I used MEGUIARS “ Paint Cleaner” followed by AutoGlym polish and then MEGUIARS NXT Tech Wax for the finished result. Took me about 8hrs.

With the sensor cleaned and installed I ran the diagnostics again and all was ok. So I then tested the A/C for leaks, and pressure.
Although the system had no leaks and A/C compressor engaed ok, there was not enough pressure in the system which lead me back to the compressor. After talking the owner, a NEW compressor was ordered along with receiver/dryer. After replacing those item the A/C is now up and running and blowing nice and cold.

However I done a full coolant hose replacement including header tank and new oil cooler seal. Brake line upgraded to goodridge stainless hoses and EBC pads along with caliper rebuild and paint. Full brake fluid flush and ABS along with a clutch fluid flush and change.

So after talking to the owner, we decided to go with a different approach to the sound system. Instead on replacing all the amps which at some point will go again; I put together a system that retains the OEM speaker, but by-passes the amps yet retains all the OEM equipment. So before posting my progress, I would like the owner to do more testing of the system and let me know his thoughts as the setup I installed lets me revert back to the seperate bose amps if he requires.

I would also like to say a big thanks to Kaz for all his help as we keep very close contact with NSX issues.
Also thanks to Andy at VTEC DIRECT for his help with parts and speedy delivery.
Plus thanks to Dali for all his help over the past 3 months or so. Great communication and speedy delivery.
On thing I will point out for the UK guys is, the complete coolant hose system is a great price from Dali but; This system is setup for LHD NSX's so a few hoses are not the correct length/fitment, so you will need to order the additional hoses from a UK/JDM source. I still found it cheaper than ordering all from a UK source though.
Andy/Kaz, maybe you guys can come up with a complete system that rivals Dali?

I decided to tidy up the top window seal, these seal can fade due to the elements and can be replaced ok, but I didnt want to start removing the seal now and cleaning out the runner and applying new bond etc.

I have the OEM NSX-R coolant cap, which most of us know is black to match the coolant tank cover.
So this week I was playing around with some spares and decided to try a DIY NSX-R coolant cap.
Strated off with old cap which was pretty old and tired looking. I removed the cap sticker and ended up with this:
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j77/icongroup/NSXPARTS/DSC07343.jpg
After a bit of cleaning by hand to remove some surface dirt and grime, I then used a special rubber drill bit that aids in removing sticker glue.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j77/icongroup/NSXPARTS/DSC07344.jpg
After using the special tool the cap looked liked this, nice and clean!
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j77/icongroup/NSXPARTS/DSC07345.jpg
I then used some high temp paint and applied 3 coats, after that I applied high temp lacquer and the results as follows:

Nice simple mod if you have the Paint/Lacquer laying around, as cost is really only time and £1.39 for the sticker.
Otherwise worth buying the OEM cap from Andy at VTEC Direct:)

Sudesh,
I have been researching Xenon/HID upgrades and have been emailing a very helpful guy at DTA. Did you change both beams or just the dip? Apparently, it is necessary to slightly enlarge the "sockets" by a mm or so to take the larger HID beams? Whom did you deal with in Germany and why there? Any of your usual expert advice would be very welcome.
BTW I see you have an Antrim plate - where are you based since I am from north Down and go back a couple of times a year?
Cheers,

Hi,
I live in Co Derry, I have owned that number for 15 years and have corresponding numbers on other cars.
I just went with the dipped beam as I dont think HID/Xenon is needed on full beam. I didnt have to enlarge anything to install the bulbs, they were a nice fit.
The only thing that you do alter is the black plastic caps that screw on over the bulbs, you need to cut out a hole to take the HID wires that come from the bulbs to the ballast, the kit comes though with a water proof seal/plug that fits nice and snug in the cut out. This is easily reverted back to standard also as the plastic caps are cheap to replace.
I bought them from a contact I have in Germany because from doing some research, they make the best kits, and I was buying them in bulk so got good discount too lol
I bought two Apexcones from the US, they work out a little ove 200 US plus tax etc, ecxellent quality and no need to enlarge anything.

Thanks Sudesh, they look like a massive improvement over the OEM set up. Its something I am seriously thinking of upgrading to, the only thing stopping me is whether you have to declare this to the insurers and I'm trying to keep my car OEM as possible.

I havent drove my NSX in 4 months, so with the good spell of weather I decided to take it out. I noticed that on start up and before driving it would take 15mins or more for the temp to rise and then upon driving the temp needle would fall to almost cool.
So started first by draining the coolant system, once the coolant was drained I removed the induction system, pretty starignt forward for me, anyone with the OEM box has a little more work to do but straight forward also.

Quite a bit of build up on the boot whuch is quite normal depending on the road conditions the car is used in.

After speaking to the owner we have decided to go with all the fluids flushed and fill.
So I started with the gearbox, drain plug removed. I like to let the transmission drain till it just dripping lightly, then I will flush the transmission with the Honda MTF3

Hi, Sudesh.
Another beautiful service!
While in there, have a look at the MTF strainer to check the level of metal dust inside the MT case.
I wish I could have that beautiful latest spec ABS module under the bonnet that can be seen in the earlier post ...
Something to be done for the future...
I still haven't managed to install my Type-R clutch pedal, damper less joint, etc...
Keep us updated on the progress as I still learn new things even now by watching these photos.

Flusing of the transmission
I have a little system I put together for flushing the transmission
Pipe and seal installed in fill plug

Also alot cheaper than pre-facelift

But after doing some looking on the parts system, I dont think the heat shield can be purchased seperately from the exhaust.

It looks like the absence of that particular heat-shield wouldn't make much difference anyway.
The rubber exhaust hanger isn't close enough to get melted surely?
What you reckon?

I dont think it will make much difference, the upper shield is on and closer to the rubber hanger. Most if not all, aftermarket exhausts for the NSX dont have any heat shield and mounted the same.
I dont think you would want to replace the entire exhaust just for the heat shield....... not priced at £2,131.83!!! and that doesnt include new tips which are £298.63 each!!
Total of £2,729.08 for complete new exhaust!!

Hi,
It was from NO:1 bank which is the first one towards the rear of the car not the bulk head, the bulk head coils are all like new. The NO:1 and NO:2 coils had corrosion. Although it looks bad in the pic, its actually more surface rust, and a couple of blasts with contact cleaner and scotch pad cleaned it right up. I tested them all for OHM level and all are perfect.
From inspection, the seals have perished slightly, so I have new one s on order, I also wonder why they didnt put seals on both ends of the covers as the covers are indented the same, so I might experiment and put 2 seals on both covers.

Hi,
It was from NO:1 bank which is the first one towards the rear of the car not the bulk head, the bulk head coils are all like new. The NO:1 and NO:2 coils had corrosion. Although it looks bad in the pic, its actually more surface rust, and a couple of blasts with contact cleaner and scotch pad cleaned it right up. I tested them all for OHM level and all are perfect.

Stop...Hammer time. :)
Sudesh the seal is only on the top to let the water exit.
Some people have said that dielectric grease will keep all moisture out and help avoid any future corrosion.
YMMV.

Hi, Sudesh.
As in my email, I would like to share the same information with the people on this site.
Addition to the Crank Pulley, the rubber seals on the Front and Rear IGN Coil covers are 'Must' items for me to be replaced at the time of timing belt service. In fact, there are lots and lots of rubber seals to be replaced that are not done by Honda standard timing belt service.
You need to be very careful with the rust on the IGN coil plate.
It will create tiny crack at the moulding and eventually, cause misfire.
Very common cause of issue on many NSX with intermittent misfire.
Some of the NSX used as every day car showed the misfire due to poor IGN coil only once in 2-3weeks period so you need to be careful if you see any rust on the IGN coil.
Depending on the timing, you won't see any issues on the ohm figure using the multimeter and yet still get misfire later on.
On the diagram that you posted, please make sure that you have collar #8 in place under the IGN coil cover.
You should have two for each cover, total of four per engine.
I noticed on many NSXs missing just one or even both collors and when the nut #17 is tightened on the coil cover, it deformed the cover allowing the moisture to get inside the plug hole resulting in rust on the IGN coil and around the spark plug.
Hope this will help.
Regards,
Kaz

After bleeding the clutch I didnt get a chance to drive the car, however from sitting in the car and engaging the clutch, it feels lighter! Not sure if this one of those things where you install something and its just in your head it feels different, but it does feel lighter. I'll know better tomorrow after a drive.
Also some people have asked me what my car looks like underneath [how clean]
So here are a few pics, I havent got round to detailing under neat this year yet; but its still looks pretty clean.

I can do under body detail no problem for you, but it's a very long process, can take a week and more for me to get it correct and also depending on the conditions the car has been used, which reflects the difficulty of removing the defects.

Thanks! It hasnt seen a dirty road's here or drive in any wet/bad weather, and I doubt it seen any bad conditions in Japan either.
I do underneath the car every year and a detail every 2 years due to the conditions my car is driven in.
This year I noticed the bolts around the exhaust have started to rust, [very common thing] and some discolouration from the bolts has moved onto the heat shields, it fairly easy to remove but I'm going to re-coat the bolts in silver or maybe I'll replace them. I can see a few small brackets which are holding cables in place, have some surface rust, so I'll either clean that up or replace. I'll also check the rest of underneath [front and back] for similar and replace where necessary.

Thanks Mark,
I use a combination of things, Engine degreasers, Auto Glym caravan/motorhome cleaner, aluminium cleaner, WD40, Along with hot water and kitchen sponges with the green scotch type abrasive side, small hard bristle brushes and rubber conditioner when finishing up in places.
A lift is definitely much easier but I can work with just axle stands at there highest point and use 6 for safety along with the trolley jacks.
I would use a lift on a car that has never been detailed underneath before so I could use a steam cleaner and power wash to get at the suspension and in ground dirt.

This is how I do mine and there's plenty of room. To date its been done in the garage. I'm hoping to extend a new hard standing area outside the garage this year so will be able to get some of the more stubborn areas with the power washer.
Looks good Sudesh.
What do you use once you cleaned to seal the underside, particularly the suspension components that look so good when cleaned up?

Hi Paul,
Depending on the persons size, using stands and jacks is fine, it is certainly more strenuous though. I have access to a big lift also, but really thinking of buying a small one for my garage.
Depending on where you live and the conditions someone drives there car in, there really isnt any need to do much after that; however if mine was a daily driver or I lived near the seaside, I would use a clear hammerite waxoil.
For me its just a good clean after every drive and detail every year, usually finishing with WD40 and rubber conditioner.
I guess suspension is similar, I like to get the wheels off and give the suspension a good wash/steam clean, its tricky doing anything on suspension due to the movement and the fact the wheel are kicking so much up around that area all the time, so really a good wash is all I do, I keep the outer casing clean with the same products above. There are rustproof products out there that can be brushed/sprayed on but from most people I have talked to in the bodyshop business and detailers its not worth using.
I'll be doing a big detail on mine shortly, under the bonnet/engine bay, then underneath front and rear and will do a write up on it.

I just use a foam cleaner of the fins and wash it down with warm water spray then apply a disinfectant

Yeah I have though about putting the OEM box back in, but I quite like the induction sound! I though it was quite a neat install and I also have a direct cold air feed from the side vent going into the filter. I'm going to take the car to a rolling road some day soon to see what its putting out, and will swap between both filter system for comparison figures. I know CAI systems don't really do anything unless your running allot more upgrades.

Hi, Sudesh.
Another great work with lovely taste.
Also, I always enjoy the size and quality of your photos.
I believe your NSX is JDM spec like mine so I would like to share some of the experience from the dyno and rolling road regarding this topic.
Please note that these are based on JDM spec so some of the facts here could be different story on your NSX depending on the country model.
JDM NSX has different mapping compared to other country models.
Due to the stability of fuel spec within Japan, the ECU data will allow us to generate 280PS power and 30.0Kgm torque using high octane fuel for NA1 (3.0L) MT model. Although the official released figure for NA2 is the same as 280PS power (because of gentlemen's agreement within Japan at that time) and slightly increased torque figure of 31.0Kgm, it’s a different story for NA2 on the dyno…. Quite big difference compared to NA1...
All of the NA1 NSX that I measured as well as at my friend’s dyno showed similar power figure depending on several conditions such as weather and so on (as you know). It’s built by Honda.
For JDM NA1, unless you have modified the engine and the mapping, you will find very little gain by changing the parts around the intake box area such as air filter, box, duct. For some of them, you actually loose some torque at lower rpm band.
You can gain noticeable power by changing the header and/or exhaust but even after this modification, the effect of replacing parts around intake box area won’t have big changes on JDM NA1. A few gains were noticed on repeated measurement on the same day but not consistent.
While the car is moving above normal driving speed, the air temperature around the airbox area inside the engine bay is not that high at all. So, you won’t loose power due to the concern over the high intake air temperature above normal driving speed.
I also have experience and some data for using OEM CATS/Exhaust as well but I’ll touch on these on another occasion.
Again, above info is only for JDM NA1 MT standard model and it’s a different story for NA2 owners and it could be different for non-JDM owners as well.
Interesting...
Regards,
Kaz

After doing some initial testing of the car as it stood I noticed the radio volume knob was not seated correctly and had quite a bit of movement, so I removed the knob for inspection

With it removed I could visually see the free play, so I removed the the front plate of the radio and found the volume knob retaining nut, had shifted up the thread and was causing the problem.
