Split Boot & Split boot replacement

I was giving my NSX a look over before MOT which is at the end of the month. Everything checked out ok right up to the last item I inspected which was the drivers side CV boot. There was a split on the boot more or less in the same positon as the one in Kaz's post. Anyway not having any time to remove the complete shaft, I decided to try one of those "Split Boots" I know they are not the best solution as a permanent fix, but with having no time and mot at the at the end of the month I though I would give it a go.

So first I removed was the old boot, as mentioned it was split in more or less the same position as this one

With the boot removed I was suprised to see very little grease on the inside and there was very little signs of grease anywhere else of the chassis of the car, infact the only place I saw any was on the drive shaft heat shield and that wasnt much either.

So as per the instructions of the NEW Split Boot, I started to clean up the drive shaft and remove the old grease, there wasnt really much to clean up

After cleaning the shaft and removing the old grease, I compacted the shaft with the new grease provided in the kit:

Once that was done I then measure the OEM boot with the NEW boot

I had to alter the NEW boot slightly to the correct size at both ends which was fairly simple.

Once I got the correct size, I installed the boot as per the instructions.

Starting at the small end first, I joined the seams of the boot moving at a few CM's a time. It is absolutely essential that everything is very clean and the boot seam is not contaminated where you apply the adseive. I have to say the adesive that was supplied with the boot is some of the strongest I have ever seen!!

after moving along the seam and joining it all together I seated the boot in the two resesses, and then used the circlip's supplied.

Sudesh, I assume this is a temporary fix, when will you switch to the normal boot or will you see how long they last before changing?

Yeah just temporary. As I already have the MOT booked and paid for and as I only noticed the split in the OEM boot, it didnt leave a whole load of options for me, so I thought at the end of the day, nothing ventured nothing gained. I've only replaced the one boot as the rest were fine. I could leave it on and see how long it lasts but, as I dont drive my car much I'm not sure it would get the testing it needs lol.

Another thing that I did notice right away was, the drive shaft "clunk" had disappeared!! I did have a slight rattle/clunk that I thought was the clutch, but after installing the new grease the noise disappeared.
