well, i've gone and done it, I've bought myself a double din stereo, with the plan to install, and keep the ashtray! I also bought an din/honda adaptor lead off ebay to save cutting any wires... i'll keep you posted!

Good luck with the install. :)

didn't get another centre console, just chopping up the one I have! it's broken anyway ( cracked beside the ashtray)

I'm going to go the other route soon, after doing the whole double din thing, I fear my NSX-R quest is pushing me towards this OEM NSX-R console to match the rest. Double din does look good though!

the head unit i decided on was a cheap and cheerful ebay dvd/sat nav/dbt-v/6.4(?) inch touchscreen whizzy bit of kit!
ok, i could have gone for a named brand and then decided i didn't like it (too much glare/ bad position for sat nav/ just didn't like it/ etc!) so i went budget, i can always upgrade later!
anyway, decided on this...
http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn41/thisYup/nsx%20hu/Chinavasion-CVJY-C29-22.jpg
it does the things I want it to, is a true double din... some do come out a little higher, which is the last thing we need in an nsx, has front loading dvd/cd and no motorised front panel!
i did also look at the 1.5 din stuff, where the front hangs down out of the 1din slot..... like this.....
http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn41/thisYup/nsx%20hu/A13F6001.jpg
then i realised if it was to go pear shaped, getting something else to fill the hole would be awkward! and i'd still have to have a motorised screen to get the dvd in!
britlude
28-08-2009, 10:17 PM
anyway... how did it go? well pretty well... here's the pics!
the tape deck just annoys me! I have NO tapes! so it has to go! and in with the new!
http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn41/thisYup/nsx%20hu/Image1238640x480.jpghttp://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn41/thisYup/nsx%20hu/Image1241640x480.jpg
now the eagle eyed amongst you will notice the stereo center console is out, but the ash tray is still in.. the centre console was broken on the drivers side beside the ahstray when i got the car, so it was 'broken' the other side and removed! it actually made the whole 'cutting the new hole' alot easier as the whole console didn't have to come out each time for hole adjustments just the stereo/ccu section!
britlude
28-08-2009, 10:20 PM
once the trimming of the hole was complete, it looked like this...

a quick aside!!!! now you remember when you've been advised to clean out the little fan just under the ashtray, as it can get contaminated with dirt and fluff... well let this be a warning to you!

I was like... OMG!

I reunited the 2 parts of the console, with fibre glass resin, with micro-fibre filler material, and 2 carbon fibre rods for reinforcement! (ok, carbon is a little overboard, but it does mean I have a genuine carbon dash!!! just a low percentage one!!!) then using the magic of resin and filler it looked thus...
http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn41/thisYup/nsx%20hu/Image1245640x480.jpghttp://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn41/thisYup/nsx%20hu/Image1246640x480.jpg

with the tape removed, and a quick satin black to colour it up, it currently looks like this....

all that needs to be done now is the final prep and finish paint! i've an idea for the paint, but i'll see if it works before sharing it with you!!!!
oh, and the ashtray still works, with no modifications!

i'm sure if you work it right, you could have the nsx-r look, with a double din concealed beneath what looks suspiciously like it could be a cover!!! :)

Yeah that is a cover that clips in when the OEM system has been removed. I think I would rather have no radio at all and just leave it all plain and simple with more weight saving lol.
Your system looks really well! Great install and as mentioned, a double din system really brings the console into a modern era in my opinion.

Nice work Jon,
I'm interested to know how it works with reflections etc given the angle it needs to lay over at in the console.
Final paint ..... maybe Charlotte?
Sudesh,
Try and talk Leigh (Kowalski) about his set up. Would give you the R OEM look, save weight but still give you a music option but its a completely stealth install.

Nicely done Jon.
Looks like it was 'lucky' your console was broken where it was, as you mention.
That's quite a big double din screen and you still have kept the ashtray, even better.
You'll probably get some glare on the screen (I do) but I notice your screen is slightly recessed so hopefully not enough to worry you. There are anti-glare film coverings they sell on ebay but I have not tried them. Maybe worth a shout?
The other thing you will find, being touch screen, will be the finger prints! I have 'trained' myself to use the top of my fingernail when pressing the screen to avoid this. Sounds silly but works!
Did you reinforce the remnants of the stereo hole at the top of the old centre console when you filled it, or was it not necessary?
britlude
29-08-2009, 08:44 AM
I haven't taken the protective film off yet, it's probably high gloss underneath!!!! i've already got the 'anti-glare' film in reserve if need be, and i've already learnt the fingernail method on touchscreens elsewhere!
the top of the stereo hole didn't need reinforcement as there's already a strengthening web in the crossbar between the ccu and head unit, the hole was cut up to that, but left it in place! (i think that makes sense!)
as for the ashtray, it has a metal frame around it inside (mainly for cosmetics when it's open) but it does define the area the door 'travels' through, so the trick is to mount the stereo high enough so that the frame remains in it's correct position and nothing is lower than the top of the frame.... if the frame is correct the door will open without touching anything! :)

Thats why I give mine a slight forward raise to see the screen better.

Paul I'm going with the OEM NA-1 NSX-R console and door trims, as you probably know they are coated differently to any other NSX and will match the steering colum covers I have. I did actually think about something very small and stealth but not sure what route to go?
As I have an ipod feed in the armrest; I was thinking, ipod to mini amp, and amp out to the mini speakers I already have.

Jon I did the same thing, just went for a cheap unit that was simple to use and had all the features. For me there was no real point in spending big£££ on a head unit as I dont have many speakers in my car and not looking for loads of noise. I just wanted something to make the car look a bit more modern inside.
What system is that Jon and do you have a link?

it's a cheapy off ebay... direct from china, £230 delivered! i worked on the theory if it needed a trim ( which in this case was a slight mod to the plastic surround) then i wasn't going to do it to a £700 bit of kit! it does all the things i want it to, has bluetooth so hands free, and sat nav. I was pleasantly surprised by the delivery... ordered 10.30pm friday, on the doorstep 9.30am wednesday!

The other thing to consider for anyone else thinking of a similar install (keeping the factory amps) is to buy a unit with enough pre-outs. I bought the Pioneer AVIC unit as featured on the SOS web site, then found out that the UK version only had one pair of pre outs. Ideally you need two pairs for ease of install (copying the mod to the ebay DIN lead Jon has pictured above). I had a mare trying to explain to Prime members, till we realised the UK & US units were different...
So, with the sides of the console, you just fibreglassed the gaps, yes?

the sides where the cutout is was filled/strenghtened with fibre glass, 2 lengths of aluminuim angle were used to give an edge to fibre glass up to, making the final fettling easier!
as mines a daily i wanted some more modern creature comforts! not seen a mercedes close enough to compare!!!! :)
pioneer avic was my next choice, but justifying the expense was difficult!

If anyone else decides to go for the Pioneer AVIC, I'd suggest the 900BT instead of the 700BT just for the extra pre outs and ease of install.

:)It's painted!!!! ok, paul guessed it was going charlotte green, so off to the paintshop, and an hour later (they are sooo slow at times!!!) i've a pot of new fangled water based colour and satin laquer... OMG the waterbased stuff is a pain to work with, my sympathies to all the car painters out there forced to use this stuff! despite reassurances the laquer would go over the base ok, it didn't want to play, but after alot of experimentation it was done....
http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn41/thisYup/nsx%20hu/Image1251640x480.jpg
however... i'm not sure if it was the mix, the lack of gloss or what, but in the car it looks blue... outside it looks the same colour as the body, inside it's blue! very strange!
so, plan B (which should have been plan A all along, and would have saved me £60!) it was a trip to halfrauds rattle can department, and grab a dark met/pearl green with the ashtray door for colour reference... a far easier paint process later we have...

i made up a bracket to suit the head unit, and the lower mounting bolt positions. I worked it so the front on the head unit was flush with the front of the centre console. Just a simple bracket folded up from flat metal.

I am planning a similar instalation to replace a very untidy afetr market single din installation in my car. I have purchased a similar unit to Britludes but the car audio installer tells me I will need a addaption kit for the din plug to the amp for him to have install it, does anyone know where I can source one of these?

What outputs does your new head unit have? If it has a sufficient amount of DIN pre-outs, you won't need anything more than Britlude has pictured above.
If you have amplified outputs, you will need to alter the output from those with a PC1-601 channel converter lead from Autoleads. I believe this might be what your installer is referring to. If you have to get them, ebay was cheap - about £10 each - as opposed to £20 each on the high street.

I'm no audio guru either, so obviously check anything I suggest!
Looking at the output it states 50w x 4. That means you have amplified audio outputs and you will need to convert their output to be acceptable to the Bose amps. The PC1-601 converter lead is what you need to achieve this. They would need to be connected in-line, between the black plug and the white plug of the DIN lead shown in the picture above.

what you need is the picture of the bundle of wires that goes into socket 2...
as NSXGB says there are 4x50w outputs, but there may be 4 low level outputs to wire into amplifiers. if they are there, they will be phono plugs on the ISO harness. (watch out as there might also be phono plugs/sockets for video output/ camera and so on)
if you have low level outputs, these can be wired into the speakers. the doors are front left/ front right, the footwell sub takes both the left and right rear signals. remember that each of the NSX speakers has a built in amplifier already!
if you don't have the low level outputs, just the wires that connect directly to a speaker, then you will need to 'calm down' the levels of this signal to protect the speakers... the widget NSXGB mentioned....
as for fitting, you want to push the unit up towards the air-con control, as this will let you retain the ash-tray. i then made a bracket to suit, a normal 2-din cage with a couple of tabs to tie it to the original mountings.
hope that helps

I assume a car audio installer will understand what is required when it comes to the cabling?
Did you have to move anything other than the material from the facia to get the unit up close to the aircon?

looks like that's got the low level outputs amongst the RCA collection. the stereo guy will know what's what.
if i remember correctly there is a support across the dash under the aircon unit. it's part of the dash, and fibreglass/resin/composite. i just had to file the 'end curves' to allow the square corners of the 2din a little higher.
if you want to keep the ashtray, the ashtray unit has a metal guard above it. if you can get the 2din above this then you'll get to keep the ashtray! the metal guard basically covers the area the ashtray lid will swing into when it's opened.
however, many installs lose the ashtray completely and reposition the lighter/accessory socket. a look around NSXPrime will give you some ideas too

Thanks again,
I do want to retain the ashtray if possible so hopefully we can make the required space as you have done yourself. The audio guy I have spoken to so far sounds a little reluctant to get involved so may need to find someone who is more enthusiastic local to Poole.

From the picture of the back of the head unit, it looks to me like the black plug of the ISO lead plugs straight into the back of the head unit, suggesting that there are no phono outputs on this unit. I think you will need at least 2 of the PC1-601 converter leads, probably 4. Check what you get with the head unit first as Britlude suggests...

I think I'll see what the installer says next Wednesday and go from there. One company I spoke to said they would bypass the existing wiring and fit different speakers without amps but this dosn't seem necessary from what I have read.

Britlude when you fitted your unit did you have a bezel or did you discard that?
I one I purchased from e bay comes witha bezel and when I offer this up it overlaps the ash tray cover. The other concern with the unit I have is that the front comes off and it stands out by about 1 cm so it would not fit flush as your has. Think I may have to change the head unit I have at this stage?

my unit hasn't got the tilting 7" screen, it's a fixed 6.2" version, CD slot at the top... the extra depth of the tilting screen might mean it can't go as flush as mine.
i didn't use the bezel on mine anyway, it's more to cover gaps it the stereo is replacing another unit. what it will show is the size of hole you'll need for the stereo!

Here's some pic...the edges aren't perfect with a small gap...will deal with it later.
The space had a double din unit inserted by the previous owner which had the flip -front jobbie and was grey which I didn't like. I had to enlarge the hole a little to fit and I fashioned a Z-shaped bracket which I screwed into the lower cross bar to stop the unit sliding further into the compartment and also to provide lower shelf-like support. The sides of the console had some yellow foam-like material which was trimmed to ensure the rear of the device slid in easily.

Ok after much thought and allot of help from those that have already carried out a similar change I have the way forward clear in my mind. I have returned the sat nav I bought to the e bay vendor who assures me they will refund my purchase as the are a company and the distance selling regulations apply and I have the car booked in with Bill at audio in motion who is fitting an alpine double din unit. The one I have chosen doesn't have sat hav or DVD capability but does have blue tooth and I phone compatibility. In the end I have no intensional of using the DVD element and I have sat hav on my phone so I have opted for a better brand that I think will also look right in the car. Bill is making up the brackets and will mould he facia around the new unit as part of his fitting service, in his words he said he likes working on these types of cars so he will do it at a better price (a man of taste). Roll on next Wednesday when I will leave the car with them for the day for the install.
Thanks again to britlude and silver surfer for your advice and pics which have been very helpfully indeed

I find the Satav on the iphone unreliable as there are many occasions where phone service and poor reception and 3G drop out affects the locator capability. The hard wired SatNav on the unit is so much better. The radio function is good and really depends on the radio mast effectiveness.

Obviously not all double dins will fit correctly or allow you to keep the ash tray, so choose wisely lol

Nice work Sudesh. My first purchase was not going to fit if I wanted to retain the ashtray but the new one will so can't wait to see it installed next week.
on another note the mot tester noted a noisy steering column. I hadn't noticed this before but I took the car out yesterday and at low speed in a supermarket car park I heard it. It seams to be more noticeable when making a right hand turn and it sounds like it is coming from the bottom on the column. Are there any know faults to be aware of?
