Was just thinking today that if I changed the NSX what would I go for without going into the obvious, NSX-R or big supercar range/ Hyper car.

Drove a P reg S4 a few years ago and hated it, especially the clutch and handbrake.

I have to agree with Simon, evrey time I borrowed my sisters GT3 I would give it back with another permanent light on the dash :(

But I would buy one in a flash if I had enough room but it would be 350 sport :)

Yeah know what you guys mean! Owned an S4s myself back in 1996/97, loved it! Have to say never had any issues other than the the build quality and rattles. lol

Sadly the build quality and rattles will still be there unless a previous owner has given the car the 'Sudesh' refresh treatment .... then you might be getting a less trroublesome one.

I was looking at the GT3 (until the S2 Elise arrived) as I figured it would be less costly to own.

Before my shortlist went down to a Noble M12 GTO 3R & NSX

I first had my heart set on trying to find an Esprit Sport 350 to look at.
Awesome looking cars with great supercar performance... but that's where it seemed to end. heard nothing but really bad news with regards to ride quality/comfort/build. Seem to recall some known issues that can cost a bit to put right?
I see one on the road every couple years and give them a big thumbs-up! respect.

Then it was the Maser Ghibli Cup :drool::drool: only about 20 of the original 24 RHD made are left in the UK. 2 litre 330 bhp Cup Race version. ( I actually like the shape a lot... but wife hated it :( ) but again... predicted costs and threatening wife scared me off.. Big argument at the time and the Chance walk into Chiswick Honda was kind of a quick way to end the discussion with a lovely IOP.

**just looked at the description closer... Cam Chain will need to be done in 16,000 miles ( every 24,000 ) which is a £5,000 service. ugh. Then there are the electronically controlled shocks that go often enough and they are £1200 - £1400 each. ugh. ugh.

Damn, got to this thread too late, there was a great opportunity to slate the late esprit and you guys are straight on to Masers already.
I think that when you have a nice car, but considering another, you make a shortlist of say five or six cars and finally come to a decision. However, the cold reality is that when we engage the brain there are few possiblities out there. Say what you want Lotus, Maserati, Noble, TVR......If you're honest they're all badly made money pits constructed from cast off's from the parts bins of the volume manufacturuers of rep and city cars.
Sold to the unwitting consumer because they think they're being patriotic, or through some misplaced nostalgia.
Cool, knew I'd get a bitch in somewhere!

Seriously though, look at the interior of that Esprit!! Most notably the handbrake on the outside and the Ford escort gear nob. Oh and you've got to love the grey trim. It's a masterpiece.

And often that decision is to keep the NSX! Now do you guys get why I wrapped mine ... After nearly 4 yrs I was having thoughts of maybe a change and so I did get new car (to look at) with non of the expense of buying something else and all the upsides of the NSX.

I think next year I'll be looking for a Blue/Orange NSX .... :)

If I was to replace the NSX it would be erally hard as I don't think that I could find anything faster and that looks as good ( to me ) as mine. I did consider Nobles, TVRs and even a GTR, but I am glad that I kept it.

Next car would probably be something with a Turbo, SC or At least 5L as well as good handling.

The 996 GT2 would be the one that could scratch the itch or if money was no object an F40. :)

The other cars are not as:

reliable
better made
structurely as sound
corrosion resistant
Some cars:

A touch kit car-ish
more expensive to repair
not as rare
Got a bad reputation
I'm sure there are other disadvantages!
Having said that, I do have a soft spot for the Espirit, but when I think its got a Renault gearbox, then its a reality check!

NSX owners are spoiled in general because the car is so good in every way and I don't just mean reliability. The transfer the experiences on other good looking and fast cars is the biggest mistake an NSX owner can do.

I had a look into a TVR Griffith 5.0 because they're said to be fast. But after consulting some forums I rapidly backed out because they're basically tinkered unengineered doghouses which result in a financial and emotional nightmare. This is for Lotus, Ferrari < 360, TVR and all other exotics.

If these cars are for sale they only wait for an other victim with a big money pocket and strong nerves.

My cars have to engineered by people who went to college, so the only make that would be sufficient would be Porsche, German quality (with very little drawbacks).

But thinking about other cars doesn't cost anything.;)

Just to clear this up lol. I'm not selling the NSX or have any intentions of selling it, was just browsing and seeing what I thought would be worth the change.

I thought of the Lotus because my younger bro is looking for something, and I thought Sport 300, Ferrari 360, TVR Sagaris and so on. At the moment he's set on the 360.

The least nightmare of all of them.:) I really like them and as long as you don't drive them they don't cost a fortune to maintain.

One thing about the NSX that sometimes gets forgotten is the fact that it has near to none of the parts in common with a standard Honda. All parts have been made especially for the NSX. There are very, very few exceptions (LMA spring, A/C compressor) like parts that have been shared with the Integra or the S2000 but these car took the NSX parts over and not the other war round.

A Lotus Esprit for example is the best example of a bastardised car with Citroen (or Renault) gearbox, Opel Ascona front suspension, a lot of GM and other parts. Ok, they just had to keep the costs down.

Why not a Toyota Supra?

Sorry if I was a little bit too harsh on other makes as I didn't want to be disrespectful but sometimes I catch myself also looking for another attractive car. It's like with women. A guy can be married to the best woman for him but he still looks after other ones, not knowing what he really has and certainly not knowing their costs. :)

But here's the point: Looking after them is very ok, dreaming of them also, even riding them for a day is ok but owning them is a big NO. Younger cars of Lamborghini or Ferrari are vastly improved as they have a big factory helping them (Audi, Fiat) and of course, they've learned from Honda and the NSX. ;)

I remember the vauxhall switches in my Esprit at the time lol! But have to say never had any issues with the car at all, other than what I mentioned. Even the Diablo, 355 and 360's I had were fine, no major issues and found them fairly spot on. Diablo was the only one that was a little uncomfortable taking out due to the size and where I live in the country it just filled the whole road lol! I ordered the new SLS merc so looking forward to that coming and picked up the new E Class Coupe last week. Loving the MPG factor in it lol. I think thought if I did sell the NSX, I'd still go for the Sport 300, always liked them, still look stunning and very rare.

Back to the author of this thread's point and if that yellow Lotus runs anything like it looks then you will enjoy it. If we were all frightened of a few knocks and bangs then the whole world would drive a Merc. Some of the best women i have dated also caused me the most trouble but when i look back i think - we'll at least they made me feel "alive" rememebr that feeling anyone??

911 - For the first time in my life started to think, maybe I should start looking at a 911. must be getting old...
Ghibli Cup - Puts it into perspective and tbh, put me off it a little?? ( the 20mph+ in-gear acceleration speeds do perk me up a bit :) )
Lotus Esprit V8 - I had acquired the image of it being bit dated and "clunky?" but this review changes that a bit 0-60 4.4 secs? Grip like stink etc... and not eventalking about the GT version here...
TVR- can't ever seeing myself going here

Obviously.. 1997 reviews, which are a world apart from reviews of 2009 perfomance cars... but in the £15K - £25k bracket, gives some interesting options for "classics"

pretty much feel the urge + I've heard from owners that driving them on the edge is an exceptional experience. just have to steer clear of the 25K mi services = £5K

If it don't get one in the next few years, kind of doubt I ever will...
