View Full Version : Japfest 2010 Track Session
SILVER BULLET

Hello everyone,
It would appear that I am responsible for a possible spin (no pun intended):D around the wonderful Castle Combe circuit at this years 'Paulfest'.
To celebrate the NSX's 20th Birthday we are looking to break our previous record attendance at this event and have at least 50 cars and their proud owners in attendance.
The cost of a closed club track session is £600, so in an ideal world it would be really good if we could get around 20 cars on track at a very reasonable cost of £30 per car, there is an additional charge of £5 if you wish to carry a passenger.
Track sessions are a great opportunity to stretch the legs of your car in a controlled and comparitively safe environment,However, you certainly don't have to drive outside of your own confort zone to enjoy the experience , so would anyone who is interested in this exciting opportunity please place their names on the list below,
Thank you,
Ian.

Thanks for taking charge of this part of the event and lets make surere its a good fun time for all!
If the numbers stack, which I'm sure they will, then I'm in as it would be a shame not to give the RE070's a run :)

What a great response so far people,at this rate we will be able to book our session by next week .
For any of you who are hesitant or nervous about taking your pride and joy on track, don't be, your journey to and from Castle Combe is likely to be far more scary;).
Keep the names coming,

Ian.

A member has asked me for some information on various aspects of our track session at Japfest this year, so I thought that it may be helpful to those of a nervous disposition:eek: or who simply haven't done a track session before if I copied my reply.
1. The only protection insisted on previously is a good quality Helmet, however you do need to have your arms covered up.
2.Before anyone can participate in a track session they are required to attend a briefing (usually by the senior driving instructor) all of the rules and etiquette are explained to drivers before receiving a
wrist band which is checked by officials before being allowed into the pit box and prior to entering the track.
3. Previously we have only been advised to 'take it easy' on the first lap, however, at the end of the
session we are shown the chequered flag which then gives you almost a complete lap to slow down and cool the car down.
4. There are no specific requirements to tape lights at Castle Combe. No lap timing is allowed.
5. You are expected to keep an eye out for faster traffic and indicate left to show that you have seen them and allow the faster vehicle to pass on your right , Overtaking is only allowed on the straights and prior to the braking areas.
Finally, I think we all want a safe track session, so my advice for what it is worth is for people to drive within their own comfort zone and just enjoy the experience safely :).
If any of the experienced track drivers among you would like to add to the above please feel free.
Appologies for the layout, it appears correctly before previewing.

Are you sure? The overtaking rule is normally... faster drivers only overtake on the left and slower drivers indicate and move to the right to let faster drivers pass.

Yep as prevoiusly stated Combe is different to the majority of tracks in that you overtake on the right hand side.
My bit of advice is respect avon rise and quarry.

Those track days at Combe attract some right tools though, they make it look like it's some sort of impossible corner!

Because they are strange folk, do things there own way. On those action days you didn't have to even wear a helmet.
Papalazarou
02-02-2010, 07:36 PM
Because the pit lan is on the left and the track goes clockwise. I may be wrong, but it seems logical.
Cheers,
James.
P.s, Quarry's no big deal, you've just got to respect it. No-one should be put off from doing the track session. It's actually a very straight forward circuit and there'll be hundreds of other cars doing their sessions before hand, so you can get a good idea of where to be.

When I went a few years ago, the 300zx guys were pretty tame and controlled.
Want me to see if I can muster up a group from there to make numbers?? That way... only two types of cars on the track?
Just a thought, Not sure if that will put the worry in people, though
Or... maybe see if the Civics / S200's want in?
* you may be able to count me in.. but not sure If I'm around that weekend.

Not sure if this would be a good idea , may put a few off, also might get a we bit competitive, we really do need to keep this NSX's only.
Despite the good start to this list we do need more of you to sign up, so if you are reading this and haven't put your name down yet please do it now, if we can't get the numbers soon we will not be able to book the track time,

Hello Jim,
That will be a shame if you are too noisey, I think Castle Combe is 100 Db at 4500 RPM, I believe there is at least one member here with a meter so perhaps you may be able to check beforehand.
Hope the new exhaust sounds great,

Hi Ian,
I have a decibel meter app on my iphone, I know it's probably not that accurate, but at least it will give me an idea.
Watch for pics in the technical section next week, and make a short clip in the movie section (with sound before and after)

If I recall correctly, the sound check at castle coombe is taken approx 12" from the exhaust and at 4500 rpm. Seem to remember comments that this gave a lower reading for our cars than taken at other circuits :)
Hope that helps and please correct me if anyone else remembers differently

Hello everyone,
Well time is shooting by and we are rapidly running out of time to book our NSX only track session,in fact we need to get at least 15 cars/drivers at a cost of £40 each if acceptable to you, to make this a goer.
If we cannot get enough people to commit to this event by the end of this month it is very likely that all track sessions will have been taken up and our oppotunity to enjoy a few laps around the Castle Combe circuit will be lost for yet another year:no:.
So if anyone reading this fancies a go on track but have not put their names down yet, please do so without further delay.
Cheers,

There are 11 on the list at the moment so that would mean about £54 each instead of £40....That's not bad really is it? Less cars and all that...

Noel, sorry to hear you can't attend, I could always take your place if you really would prefer Castle Combe to St Tropez .

Well I am totally gutted, as I am no longer going to be able to make it this year either, with the MoT failure, and I Have started my Pre-Deployment Training to go back to the hot & sandy place!!
I just don't have the time to get the car on the road, so it will be SORN'd until I get back next year.
Cheers all

The bad news is that we now have only 16 people signed up for this and I have 20 track passes paid for so we need some more people to join us, otherwise I will be having a very expensive 20 minutes:eek:.
If any of you can persuade a friend to participate I would be most greatful.

You should've received my payment by now?
hi - does anyone know what the deal is to hire helmets at the circuit?
The Japfest site says:
* You will need a helmet - if possible bring your own.
* Helmets are mandatory for all drivers. You will need to organise your own, although Castle Combe has a limited number available for hire (credit card deposit required). Helmet straps are to be securely done up.
... I'd rather not show up and find their "limited number" means none available...

I have a couple of spare helmets albeit quite small sizes but will bring with me just in case anyone can make use of . The ones available from the circuit aren't always the best fit so would suggest getting in early if you need one.

Hi Rob,
I believe the NSX session is running at 11.42 from what Iain at Japfest told me.
IN addition to this I have the following sessions for you and the team
9.18 9.54 10.30 NSX DEMO 12.18 13.30 15.36 16.12
The demo is for Extreme track machines and will not have the in/out pit facility for demo runs like the other sessions.
I've got your passes for these sessions, paddock passes for the NSX and Truck, plus thickets for you and your Dad. I'll be on the gate and will speak to you in advance to meet you.
regards, Paul

Your car will need to pass the sound check before you are allowed on track so the earlier that you can get this done the better.

Thanks again for organising this track session - obviously, it would be a bad show for you to be out of pocket as a result...
How about opening up the "NSX Club" session to a few S2000s, perhaps? I'm sure a suitable posting on S2ki could drum up 5 S2000s who want to join their NSX brethren on track...

Thanks for your suggestion Ewan, i'm not sure that this would go down well with everyone, although I have no problem with being joined by one or two sensible drivers, however , I would need consent of the majority of participants as this was sold as a NSX only session and I really don't want to cause any upset.
So does anyone object to a maximum of 4 S2000's joining us on track ?
Cheers,
Ian
