Ah? Cold ampere?

My Odyssey 680 works perfectly since more than two years. Needs battery jogger in the NSX.

Hi, Sudesh.

Nice new battery....
When you are done, please take some photos on your solution for the battery terminals and the bracket/holder for the battery case.

Regards,
Kaz

I think someone posted similar before ( was it Mr Forumadmin himself?) that also had a racing battery and made up a bracket for it, and posted pics on here.

Thats a great weight saving, but i'm just wondering about holding charge? This freezing weather can kill off batteries fairly quickly, so how would it cope?

I could be tempted though, even if just for summer use.

Cheers
Jim

Hi Kaz,

Yeah will do, I have a number of options of the case, Varley do there OEM case and there are other race type cases availabe to suit the Varley battery, I'm also looking at doing something with the OEM NSX case; the battery terminals are straight forward and I'm just changing them to ring terminals with M6 ends to fit the battery.

I know a few guys running the Varley in Lotus Elise and Exige and they use them regulary and track in most conditions and have no bad reports.

Kaz this what the new terminal ends look like.

They can be crimped or soldered using the small hole at the top.

As the owner of what was Kev's car I've found that the battery (odyssey 545) works fine for leaving for a couple of weeks without driving but I tried once after maybe about 3 weeks and it was dead. This happened to be when it was very cold.

I'm happy enough with it's performance.

Is one of those things, that if people are running a battery conditioner it should be fine, I for one am curious, so might give this a go soon.

You must be able to get a metric equivalent of these:
http://www.solarseller.com/battery_post_connectors_conversions_adapters_repai r.htm#stud_terminal_to_top_post_conversion
(Items 5513 & 5514)
Then you wouldn't have to alter your harness.

This place has some good stuff: http://www.rallydesign.co.uk/index.php?cPath=692

Great Find! Didnt think of that. I only altered the negative cable on one end, can be easily put back to OEM plus the negative cable is reasonably cheap from honda if a new one is needed.

I've kept the OEM positive terminals and just added an extension, because the new battery is alot smaller the OEM cable would not reach the battery and I didnt want to add more weight in the way of building the battery up in height to reach.

I'll add some more pics when I get a chance.

A few pics of the terminals installed.

As mentioned I changed the negative terminal end to the ring type. Used some solder to seal it and then masking tape to tidy up the end.

On the positive cable I just purchased an already made cable with ring terminals at either end. I just put one end into the OEM battery cable terminal and the other end will obviously go to the battery.

I removed the positive cable from the dash drain pipe tucked it in behind and secured it to another mount. Then plugged the wee hole

I havent installed the battery yet but here is rough idea of what it will look like.

Once I get it all installed, I'll tidy the wires up some more and insulate the connection where the new positive cable attaches to the OEM termial.

Looks good Sudesh I quite like using heat shrink sleeves for dressing up and protecting cable.

Good idea Ary! Think I'll redo that negative terminal with the heat shrink. Not sure if I could heat shrink the positive terminal due to keeping the OEM end.

Looks good Sudesh & I can't believe how much smaller the battery is than oem. Must be saving a few kgs?, just to need finish it off with some form of casing & bracket to keep it from the elements & make it secure.

Thanks!

I listed the weight saving in the first few posts, A saving of 10.1kg!

I have the Varley battery case coming and hopefully I can work with that and install it in the NSX, if not I have a few other ideas.

Finally got the battery installed

Heres the new case

http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j77/icongroup/NSXPARTS/SAM_0370.jpg

So with the old battery out of the way, I noticed a few holes already in the beam, this was great as it matched up with the battery case, so I added 2 bolts and then used thread lock nuts to keep the bolts secure. I then added a rubber stopper at the top so that when the battery is in place, it can rest tightly against the stopper and when securing the case, its stops it from tilting back.

With the case and bolts etc weight came to 6.1kg

The old battery with case and battery mount came to 16.6kg

So the saving went up slightly to 10.5kg saving.
