I noticed on a few NSX's I had in and even my own [before changing to light weight battery] that the coating over the battery mount over time perishes reveling the metal underneat.

I think this is quite dangerous as the mount is very close to the battery terminals and although its tight, if anthing did move or worst case you had front end accident, you could end up with the positive terminal touching the metal mount, and with the battery mount running to bare metal via the rods it doesnt need to be touching the positive terminal for..........well lets say it wouldnt be good. :(

So I would advise checking your mount and replacing it if perished, I have a new mount for the 2002 car I'm currently working on and for the sake of £36.00 worth every penny.

Some pics:

As you can see, coating has perished and in this pics look how close the terminal is.

I try to remember always to wear safety goggles if changing a battery. There used to be a " handle maker" for sale in the past that was a pot of paint that one would dip the tools in and they took on a plastic coating. Perhaps that would be a solution???

Hi, Sudesh.
Nice advice.

Also, the orientation of the bracket looks wrong to me. The position of battery to be shifted towards the right side of the car as well. Depending on the size of the battery, it may be difficult due to the GND anchor point at the back of the battery case.

Hi Kaz,

Yeah I noticed this also, and think its due to the battery. I have also seen that the OEM black case on the cars I worked on, vary on which side they choose; Some choose to put the high side forward, some the lower side. From what I can gather, OEM SPEC is low side forward.

Good shout Ary. When I changed my battery the other week I noticed that my battery clamp was not looking its best and was going to paint it. Now you've given me an idea, I have some plastic coating powder that I think would be much easier and quicker to apply. It's stuff usually used to coat fishing leads. All I'm going to need to do is wire brush the rust and paint off, heat over the stove for a min and sprinkle the powder on. It will be dry and able to bolt on as soon as it's cooled.
Something to do on a cold wet weekend....

After further inspection it appears that the battery is seathed just fine in the tray.

I noticed the undertray is different to mine so maybe this is an update on facelift cars.

The battery sits further to the right but is supported.

I checked the parts system and it seems that HONDA made a change along the way to the "plate assy" and battery mount.

Parts pic below, shows the newer type mount does sit out to the right, also noticed spare wheel bracket is different.

Perhaps the change is when the 15" spare went to a 16"??

I though about that but I worked on later cars that have "plate assy 3"

I'm not 100% yet but I think "plate assy 23" came around 2000

May be 1999 since I have the type 23 one?

Nice one! Would be interesting to see who has it and work out when it came in and what the real reason for it is? My first thoughts was for the spare wheel change but as mentioned I've seen later cars with type 3. Maybe it came in with the change to 3.2 engine?

More checking with Honda reveals that

Type 23: 60500-SL0-030 "PLATE ASSY, SST HO" was introduced from 1997-2005

Type 3: 60500-SL0-020 "PIPE ASSY, SST HO" is 1991 - 1996

So I guess that change was when the 3.2 came in. So I'm wondering has something in there been changed for Honda to update to the Plate Assy? I know the ABS unit is different but that's well out of the way.

If anyone is interested, the powder coating method AR suggested works very well and cost <£5. Bit cheaper than a new bracket.
