I bought a brand new genuine FD2 Honda Civic Type-R aluminium gear knob from a chap on eBay for £28 + free P&P - bargain :)

If anyone's interested - this is the guy:

It took 5 days to arrive - quicker than some UK sellers!

So, the knob arrived today:

Obviously the standard knob has the little retainer clip that holds the gaiter in place:

To make this work with the new knob I carefully cut the clip off with a junior jacksaw and then filed and sanded the clip's rough edge until it was smooth:

I then used a solvent cleaner to clean the knob and the clip here the two surfaces are to be bonded.

I used a very strong 2 pack adhesive to bond the clip to the knob:

Clip now bonded to the knob:

And the finished product:

Nice mod Connor! Similar to the facelift NSX-R!

Cheers Sudesh - definitely similar to the NA2-R but at a fraction of the price!

The throw in the gear change is slightly shorter now too, which feels better.

Do you know when you'll be expecting the steering wheel boss to arrive?

Itching to get the Momo tuner wheel fitted now :)

Man nice shiftnob, but you could have achieved the same with a jamb nut and washer without sacrificing the OEM knob.

Looks great BTW.

Cheers Ary - never thought about the jamb nut - good thinking!

Ah well, the job's done now!

I think the throw is probably more of an illusion, as the NSX-R gear stalk is shorter and knob is threaded differently. What your experiencing is the slightly shorter height in the OEM leather knob against the Civic-R one.

Hopefully have NSX-R boss next week.

Yeah that's what I meant.

The height of the knob is shorter making the throw slightly shorter.

Give me a shout when the boss arrives - cheers! :)

Nice work and co-ordination to your NSX .. surprised more owners haven't done similar mod.

Yep, I like that!

Ary's washer / locking nut approach appeals as it doesn't involve sacrificing the OEM knob......am I right in thinking that this would simply involve putting the nut & washer inside the gator to support it?

You've GOT to fit the Type-R mesh gaiter while you are there...it's only right. :)

And just how much might I expect to pay for this weight saving performance part?!?

Your right.....I have just had a look on the Dali & SoS sites.

Quite reasonable for an 'R' part.

Trouble is, it comes with a c/f base which I don't much like (given that my interior is standard, hence there is no other c/f on display).

I quite like the meshy gator though!

It was cheap alright as the Civic type-R gearknob is £84.51 from Honda new.

Did exactly the same mod a few months ago, got the gearknob from the same place.
Same shorter shift feeling as result of the shorter knob :pleased:
Only complaint: with current temps the knob is FREEZING COLD to the touch ;)

Did you cannibalise the OEM knob like gcon45 or use another fixing method?

If you do remove the clip from the OE knob it pushes tightly on to the lip on the underside of the FD2 knob so you don't have to worry about getting the clip centred.

A nice bonus!

Ian, you could get a mesh gaiter made. I'm pretty sure the leather factory one is held in with some staples so yours could be de-installed easily and reversed when the time came...

No, didn't want to cannibalise the OEM knob as the former owner just put a new one in, would have been a shame.
Bit difficult to write down how I did it, but will try:
-take a piece of 12mm inside dia coolant hose and cut a 5mm thick ring
-slide the ring on the gearstalk where it gets conical and push it down approx 2-3cm under the threading
-take a rubber grommet as used to protect a hole in metal panel to lead something through, with inside 10, outside about 20mm dia.
-force this upon the hosering and push it through the opening in the chrome plastic piece on top of the gear gaiter so it gets stuck in there keeping the gear gaiter approx 8mm under the threading
-take another rubber grommet with inside dia equal to the ring formed extension on the new gearknob put this on top of the geargaiter and screw gearknob on
Now the geargaiter will be touching the big grommet on the underside and the gearknob will fit in the grommet from above making it wedged inbetween.
In the end it looks like the geargaiter has a rubber top end and is snugfit aganst the gearknob.
Hope all this makes a bit of sense.
Works perfect and looks OE at the cost of a few pence (2 rubber panel grommets and cut ring of rubber hose)

Just bought an FD2 6spd MT Honds Type R gear knob off ebay. Will try the above method of fitting as it sounds within my capabilities (just) rather than hack the OEM gear knob apart

This is the gear knob thats on the 07 Civic Type R and although it feels good, its bloody cold!

So you're adding more RED to slow down the gear shift as well s the car ... Must make sure to ave plenty of stops on the next drive out so you can catch up ;)

Senninha

All that extra pigment to make the red dye just adds more weight (like the paint) .... you'll then go even slower which means I can now have toast with my coffee

Geoff, ditch the spare and frame, toolkit, boot carpet, engine cover and you'll be faster than stock for free.

Get an aftermarket exhaust and save a few more lbs and some ponies.

Get more radical and there is always room for power to weight improvement.

An absolute bargain compared to the Type R version for the NSX!

Whats the going rate for an NSX one?

Im not really a fan of that style of gear knob on the NSX, think its due to how high it sits compared to OEM NSX-R setup. However if I really had to choose one, I would go with the S2000 one, looks basically the same as NA2 NSX-R for allot less, especially if you can find it on eBay.

I would even give UK dealer a call to get a price, may not be too bad.

Just fitted my new Type R Gear knob.

Secured the gaiter by way of a locking nut and a washer, supplied free from Halfords when they had the dash open to complete the fit of my Parrot Mk9200i

I think it looks good.

The gear knob, washer and locking nut weigh 23.7g more than the old gear knob but the shortened gear throw helps the acceleration thru the gears. I haven't factored in what difference the additional red paint will make.....

What about a DC2 gearknob - titanium for weight and looks a little more sculpted than the simple ball-type. Plus would probably be closer to the OE height...

While I am trying to keep my car as original as possible I felt the OEM gearknob was letting the car down a bit. So I bought myself an NSX-R meshgaiter and a knob off eBay, not sure what it's from and it's certainly a loud colour!

Anyway, a succesful upgrade I think.
