View Full Version : HEELLPPP (please)! Clutch advice needed

Hiya fellow NSXers,

I guess it was inevitable after 130k miles...

But - all of a sudden I have that slipping clutch feeling. Nasty - now even grandmothers in rover 214s can beat me.

Seriously - my cluctch is gone - where should I turn - any advice.

Option 1: Chiswick Honda - for the genuine feeling - no doubt very costly

Option 2: A specialist - Using a genuine kit - any suggestions?

Option 3: A specialist - Using something a little cooler and aftermarket - again any suggestions.

Really - I would LOVE to save money - and get a beefier/better clutch as well - but I dont want to risk someone F(*king up my car - if they dont know what they are doing

I can only comment on the Honda original part fitted by a NSX dealer:

Nortn Way Honda fitted a new clutch (at my cost) whilst they had my gearbox out under warranty. The new clutch has transformed the car, with smooth action, and better feel. I would always go to a trusted official dealer for major work, yes you may pay more, but at least you know ther's a good chance they know about the car, and you have some comeback if all's not right.

SO far... My car has been treated to only 100% dealer servicing and genuine OEM parts.. but....

I figure there must be a specialist out there - or at least someone who knows how to replace an NSX clutch properly - and save me a few pounds (WITHOUT sacrificing on the quality of the job)

To be completely honest - I looked in on my car while it was being serviced by a NSX dealer in SW london (just to avoid any legal issues of naming the dealer) AND i could almost have sworn that my car was being worked on by a young chimpanze, who clearly didnt know much about NSXs - hell - he didnt even know how to open the engine compartment with out my help...

Then - to cap it off - the car was returned to me with a broken door handle - and they swear it came in like that.... LIKE I WOULDNT HAVE NOTICED I COULDNT GET OUT OF THE CAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I used Two Mills NSX dealer (all my service history is complete with Honda so...) and it cost £1,500 including the service, valve clearances and MOT.

Only thing was, I never asked for the old clutch back and given that my car didn't feel 'transformed' I did wonder if perhaps I changed it too early and not having the old kit meant I never got to check it.

I had only felt the very occasional slip and it has never done it since so I suppose tis good - just when parts are so steep I wonder if some bits were still servicable.

I got a price from a specialist and they were no cheaper than the Honda dealer...

I was going to say something but ultraviolet has sort of beaten me to it.

The biggest factor of a clutch replacement is the parts themselves. The Honda clutch kit consists of everything, fly, mid and outer cover, the discs and bearings. You can't even buy the parts separately.

If you go aftermarket, you may get used/reconditioned parts.

If you want the piece of mind, stay Honda and get an experienced dealer to replace. The twin disc clutch requires adjustment, that someone who hasn't done a few may not know.

Hi,

I agree with the other posters, it's important to get an OEM clutch preferably fitted by a dealer, but there is another option.

The last owner of my car bought an OEM clutch from an after market company and got the dealer to fit it, apparently saving around £400.00.

I'm not endorsing the following link because I've never bought anything from them, but it may be worth comparing this companies parts prices with the UK ones.

P.s, don't be put off by importing, in my experience the American market is very efficient at shipping stuff anywhere.
