Honda Prelude

Anyone have one of these preludes with the OEM lip spoiler kit like this? Have taken a notion for one to buy as a keeper. Been doing a bit of searching but cant seem to find anything decent. Dont really know allot about them so any tips on best model to go for? I recall there is a 2.0 2.2 and 2.3. My mum had the prelude model before this she also had a CRX and Accord lol

That looks very similar to my old one. I used to have a 2.2 vtec (*** import), and to be honest, i didnt like it, to many things kept going wrong with it, maybe i had a lemon?

I ended up droping the engine and using it in my civic.

Brilliant car and the active 4WS is the best idea Honda ever wasted, because no-one CBA to learn its advantages of maneouvrability & stability. I cannot find a modern car with such a brilliant ride/handling compromise.

It's another one of my 'keepers'.

I had a prelude (same model) for 9 years and loved it. Nothing ever went wrong and was the best all round car I have had even despite my now wife crashing it ! It was a good long journey car with the seats being fantastic for my frame and was a good handling car when pushing on a bit, the chassis being fantasticly balanced.

If it was my choice then I would go for a UK 2.2 Vtec Manual(185bhp) with leather. In the uk the auto was available only on the 2.0 (135bhp) and the 2.3 (160bhp) and oddly the 2.0 was not available to the Japanese market and in the uk it was the only one not to have rear wheel steering.

With the import models you get more choice and a few more whistles and bells but a lot of models are auto which for me defeats the point. The JDM lightweight model is the most popular with the benefit of having an LSD.

I bought my car with 72,000 miles and sold it 9 years later with 180,000 the only reason I got rid of it was the rusting rear arches. Annoyingly they rust from the inside out and not due to mud build up on the lip. Mine was religiously kept clean and it still rusted. Had I Known that when I first bought the car I would of taken the interior trim off and wax oiled the inner arches.

If I found another one with the right spec and colour then I would snap it up just haven't got the space at the moment so I am not looking!

My Dad had a 2.3 version around 1993 or so. I had a Renault 19 16v at the time and considered chopping in the Renault for his next car and adding difference to keep the Honda.

Up side was the build quality and Handling was good (rear steer IIRC) but TBH it did not feel as fast as the Renault. In the end I didn't bother and kept the Renault.

The Honda was a nice car but not special enough for a long term keeper for me.

Thanks for the replys! Some great info Pete, didnt realise there was a light weight version, was told the import cars have more bhp too.

John I also had a renualt 19 16v, was the 3 door version but always preferred the 4 door one. However I dont agree the car has to be special to be a keeper, a real nice example would be good enough for me to make it a keeper.

Think though the notion for one, stems back to the first time they came out. At the time I had a new rover coupe and when I was thinking of changing I had a look at the then new prelude, it had the factory options of lip kit, soft line 5 spoke alloys, lowered suspension and leather. I remember having the car for a couple of days and absolutely loved it; didnt buy one though lol....:(

Mine was a 4 door one in Red. Chamade I think it was badged as in 1991. I swapped a Citroen AX GT for it. The Renault really gripped in its day and was pretty quick. 137BHP now is a shopping trolley in hot hatch terms!

Each to their own Sudesh. For sure the Prelude was a very comfortable good looking car. Nothing wrong with it at all, I guess you must have more garage space than me lol. I always wondered what the Japenese 2.2Vtec was like. I raced a guy back through Northants with an Accord Type R last year from Silverstone and that was pretty rapid.

5th generation preludes also have automatic gearbox issues.... as i found out after i got one!

I owned a 1994 2.3 manual in white with full Honda body kit and loved it. I had no problems with reliability apart from a leaking front rad. The problem was rear wheel arches, better go for metallic paint as these were more rust proof. The 2.3 had clever 4WS system like the VTI and was brilliant in that it steers slightly in the same direction as the fronts at high motorway speeds to aid lane changes, but in reverse the rears go the opposite way to aid parking! Also check that if the model comes with the Honda body kit, the front lower splitter is very low and can crack! HTH
