View Full Version : What did you own before your NSX?

I enjoyed reading Sudesh's thread about everyone's introduction to the NSX and it got me thinking as to what everyone drove before their NSX.
I had a few sub £1000 cars in my late teens but when I started to work full time I could finally afford some of the cars I wanted.
My history goes like this:
2005 EP3 Honda Civic Type-R (Premier edition)
My first Honda and one that I had admired since it's release in 2001.
Decent wee car let down by it's numb electric power steering.
http://img818.imageshack.us/img818/7250/74862518.jpg
2005 DC5 Honda Integra Type-R
My second Honda and one that I loved very much. When I had this there weren't many DC5s around and I enjoyed the relative exclusivity!
The hydraulic power steering really set this car apart from the Civic but I soon became disinterested with front-engined FWD cars.
http://img841.imageshack.us/img841/3476/24832738.jpg
2005 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX GT
My first foray into the dark-side of 4WD turbo saloons came with this car.
It was superb straight out of the box and even better after throwing a lot of cash at it. It had everything from Rays CE28N wheels to a full AP brake conversion and Bride Gias kevlar seats. It was running 421BHP and 390LB/FT in the end.

2007 Porsche Cayman S
After selling the Evo (on a whim) I caught the Porsche bug and bought this.
In all fairness this was a very capable car. It handled well and had plenty of power for all it's size and weight. I got bored pretty quickly with the car however as I just felt something was missing. An LSD perhaps?
http://img708.imageshack.us/img708/9480/80569181.jpg
2000 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VI (Tommi makinen edition)
After selling the Cayman S I was looking for some of the old thrills of my previous *** cars and had always admired this version of the Evo 6.
This had been pretty much garaged from new and has less than 15,000 miles on the clock. I enjoyed the car for a while but after the Porsche I couldn't help feel that the Evo felt a bit like a flimsy Japanese tin box.
That ended my love affair with 4WD turbo saloons.
http://img248.imageshack.us/img248/184/76606203.jpg
1999 Porsche 911 (996 C2)
I found myself back in a Porsche straight after selling the Evo 6 as I wanted to see what all the 911 fuss was about. A lot of people dismissed the Cayman as a poor man's 911 and I found out for myself that the Cayman was actually a far superior car. Being rear-engined I hated the balance of the car and never found it that exciting to drive.

My selection of cars prior to the NSX is not to the same extent as what some people will have on here, but here goes
2005 Mitsubishi Evolution 8 GSR 260 UK Spec (see pic)
As with Connor, this was my first introduction to all things 4 wheel drive. The Evo was an 'itch i had to scratch'. dont get me wrong i really enjoyed my time with the Evo, over 4 years of ownership and she NEVER put a foot wrong in that time. Car was put through to Stage 1 (ecu, full exhaust, induction, boost controller) and she was braking around 370+ bhp prior to selling. Great point to point car, superb handling, awesome grip levels. But now the NSX is on an entirely different playing field and have no regrets moving it on now
1999 Honda Accord Type R (with optional Recaro leather with red inserts) (see pic)
My first proper introduction to the Honda marque, and what a car! WOW, I just loved this car, the VTEC, the handling, the performance, the all round user friendliness. I must admit when i sold this car to get the Evo I always wondered if i had done the right thing. The car is a superb all rounder and I loved every minute of ownership. Again NEVER had any issues with this car over course of ownserhip, no synchro gear issues or anything like that. just a real focused drivers car.
1997 Nissan Primera GT
A fabulous driving front wheel drive car, the chassis was excellent albeit the power of the engine did not do it justice, car deserved more power. I was very impressed with the capabilities of this car, and on a few track days she was very capable. I remember an instructor being extremely shocked about how composed she was on the track. I think these cars were under-rated in every way. Again as with all Japanese cars ... no issues throughout term of ownership (flat battery perhaps). Lost all my pics of this car, but she was coloured in 'Dragon Green' (aka BRG)
1995 Nissan Primera 1.6LX
The start of my full time employment back in 1997 after i graduated. bought this car cause i liked the thought of a big car, it had loads of equipment ABS etc and was a good driving car. very capable but engine was strained somewhat due to size and weight of the body. This was the start of all things Japanese in my car purchases! LOL!
Prior to the above cars was an assortment of Austin Rover/Rover Metro's and embarrassed to say an old Austin Montego in Metallic Blue
Aside from owning the NSX, I enjoy motorcyling as well. At the moment my good bike is an 08 Triumph Tiger 1050 and my winter 'hack'/all purpose bike is a 00 Yamaha TRX 850 parallel twin. Ohh and i have a 'shed' as my run around 98 Honda Civic 1.4i in 'ole fellas' red ;)

Wow, another fan. I had a Primera eGT and it was the best budget car I had. Took it on track and had people asking what was under the hood, lapped behind an Impreza quite well. Used one whole new offside tyre on the day, nothing like understeer to scrub speed when you don't have enough grunt to risk using the brakes.
I had a caterham 7 then a caterham 21 VHPD and then the NSX 8 years ago.

In order from 1984 when I passed my test.
Renault 16
The most comfortable car I have ever had.
Vauxhall Viva
Rubbish but it was all I could afford at the time.
Austin Allegro
Without doubt the worst car I have ever had, dreadful in every way.Makes me laugh when I see them at classic car shows:laugh:
Ford Capri 2L
Great fun, spent a fortune on it.
BMW 320
The most uncomfortable car I have ever had, headgasket went. Will never buy another BMW.
Volvo 340
Boring but very cheap to run
Austin Maestro
Constantly breaking down, the AA cancelled my membership LOL.
Golf GTI mk2
Loved it,gutted when it got written off in a crash.
Austin Montego
Didn't learn from the Maestro experience, this one caught fire:eek:
Fiat Cinquecento
Hated it,only bought it because the wife wanted one.
Vauxhall Carlton
Very good car,underated by most.
Vauxhall Carlton GSI
Brilliant car untill it rusted away.
Another Vauxhall Carlton GSI

VW Scirrocco
A great drivers car,big fun for sod all money.
Nissan 200SX S13
Adored it and still miss it greatly. Will buy another very soon.Never got bored of it even after 5 years.

hi mate
GLAD to know I am not the ONLY one (on this forum) who enjoyed these fine motors ... one of the best cars Nissan ever produced. Yes remember the comments i got at track days too, could not believe a Primera has a sports variant ... mine was the saloon version and it interested a lot of people. LOL she did eat the tyres on t.d's i admit but it was worth it.
Nice one mate!

Having spent many years in the motor trade I got to drive most things from a £50 p/x upto a White with Red leather Bentley. When I left the trade, the desire to change cars regular became an expensive b ut enjoyable hobby .....
LHD Sunbeam Ti with full road/track suspension fitted by Jimmy & Colin MaCrae's mechanic - no car I've owned has handled as flat!
Escort RS1600 (FWD) - my first Recaro's. Car ate tyres
DC2 - wow, the hype is all true - I want another one for sure!
Lotus Elise S2 - one of the first to have 135 upgrade - Chapman would have loved this car. I really miss this one
S2k - a warm and comfy Elise that looked after me when we left the road upside down
Prelude 2.0i-16v - in white as most were, cost £150. Advertised as Type R - the R stood for rust:laugh: I bought this to keep miles of the S2k. I put 6k miles on this one in 4 months then gave it to a mate - so much fun!
Mini Cooper - dont get it???
NSX - fulfilled a 15yr dream. Now owned for 4 1/2 yrs, been to Europe several times and added 20k great miles.
regards, Paul

DC2 - wow, the hype is all true - I want another one for sure!
I suppose it's appropriate that I should follow Paul:-
Mk1 VW Polo, pea-green (1978) - inherited from my Mum as an A-level and then Uni student. Unbelievably basic and pretty crap, but it was wheels which was all that mattered then.
Orion 1.6i Ghia, gun-metal (1987 - aka XR3i with a boot) - my first decent car, bought when I stated work, and it was better than the rep - enough to keep me entertained for 3 years, despite needing some repair-work
5-dr Civic VTi, red (1997) - bought as a present to myself for passing my ACA qualification. First car to make me realise how much fun driving could be...and utterly bombproof!
UKDM DC2 ITR, black (2000) - Oh wow. Wow, wow and wow. This was a whole other level, despite me putting 50+k and 7 trackdays on the car in 3 years. Then I got a job 40 miles from home...so she went...
Mk1 Focus TDCi Sport, blue (2004) - actually good fun for a diesel, if not massively economical (42mpg on m-ways - my right foot?!?). Did the job, and I got a weekend car to go with it...
S2000 (2003), MC-blue - "my first rwd", and I treated it like such - seriously. Merely OK as standard, came alive after geometry mods and then felt more tied-down after fitting cross-braces. Might still get another one.
Meanwhile, the long-distance job had gone, so:-
UKDM DC2 ITR, black (1999) - and this one's a keeper! On a typical british road it's more accessible than the NSX, and ALWAYS feels on your side...utter hooligan of a car (or is that me?!?) :D
...and finally, I made it:-
NSX, yellow (1996) - no introduction needed!

What a task.....I am an old git and used to change my cars when the ash-trays were full!
Austin Mini 850. My first car, so it will always be remembered fondly. Engine mounts were dodgy, so it used to jump out of gear going up hills! Span it one evening on the Somerset Levels, coming home from the pub, 7 people in the car. Happy (irresponsible) days!
Vauxhall Viva. Horrible thing, no end of trouble - mechanical & tin worm, but seemed so grown up after the Mini.
Mk. 1 Escort 1300. Good fun to drive, but big end went with a horrid clatter! Probably would be worth a few bob now!
Fiat 127. Got me through my Uni days with little fuss. Not a bad little car, and remarkably for a 1970's Fiat, not a trace of rust.
Volvo 340GLX. Big, comfy, hateful.
Citroen 2CV. Great, great car - taught me so much about preserving momentum & planning overtaking moves well in advance!!!!
Escort XR3. Black. My pride & joy, but that engine was so unrefined!
Fiesta XR2. White (after my bad experiences with black!) My first ever new car. Went on Honeymoon in it, so remembered fondly. Never did anything wrong to me.
Ford Orion Ghia. OKish car. Agree with Havoc - better than its image. Came to me Red, but paint faded to a fetching shade of pink over the 2 years I owned it!
MkII Golf GTi 16v Also White! Also bought new. A good car, liked it a lot.
Mk. II Scirroco GTi. Black (I didnt learn...my last black car!). Remembered fondly.
Mk. II Scirroco GTi. Red. Proved to myself you should never buy the same car again.
3 dr. Civic 1600 VTEC. The obsession began here. Bonkers car. Early days of VTEC, transition was unsubtle and the car sounded absolutely fantastic from 5000rpm to the red line. One of my favourite cars.
4. dr. Civic 1600 VTi. OK, but a little more grown up than the previous incarnation. A bad thing in my book!
Gen. 3 (the pretty one!) Prelude 2.0 VTEC. Probably my favourite car. Did everything so well, 4WS was a revelation. That dash - like something out of a sci-fi movie. I loved it. There was a tear in my eye as its new owners drove it away.
2001 (and as Honda intended, before all those namby-pamby suspension mods!) S2000 - owned from new (took advantage of the weak € and EU free-trade rules, paid less than £21k from a Honda dealership in France) for 5 years, 55k miles. Fantastic car, and may well own another in the future. Closest I have come to spinning a car on the public highway since my mini - exited roundabout, slight uphill gradient, wet road & I fishtailed alarmingly down the A23!!!! Thankfully no harm done to anything but my nerves & ego! Sold for $14k in 2006.....bargain performance motoring.
2001 NSX. Y1. A dream realised.
Edit:Just realised, I took ownership of Y1 4 years ago today!
(Various other cars not listed here - including 3 more Honda's, which were 'family' cars)
NSX 2000

I'm the complete oposite of a impulsive buyer so my car ownership history is rather dull and short.
This I think this has helped me to afford an NSX quicker (although not originally a goal).
Age 19 - 1992 Peugeot 106 1.1 Graduate 90k on the clock.
Only 'impulsive' buy due to wanting to drive to Southampton the next week. Completely gutless and 4 speed but quite fun to drive.
20 - MY03 MK4 Vauxhall Astra 1.8 sxi.
A great and huge upgrade. Car was only 18 months old and 13k miles on the clock for a bargain price. Had all SRi extras. Twitchy rear end, needed rear anti roll bar and or stiffer rear springs.
21 - MY03 MK4 Vauxhall Astra Coupe 1.8.
Slowly modified over ownership. My 'Daily' car. Don't think I'll be getting rid of it (or at least any time soon).
26 - 1992 NSX
My first Honda and oldest car yet. Drives alright :)

threads such as this are very interesting
Starting in 1968 my first was a moggy 1000
then a Riley Elf
Mini Cooper
MG Mk 1 Midget
would you believe a 1975 Marina 1.8
then what I thought was not only my first real car but one I loved and enjoyed a 72 Alfa Junior GT more card than engine 103 bhp from 1300 cc
reved to 8000+ and a joy to drive in the mid 70's
then
Mini Van
Alegro
Maxi
Mini
Citroen GSA x2
then a series of Cavalier SRI's as company cars
followed by Zantia, Lagona and Rover 75 diesel company cars
Focus 2.0 Ghia didn't get on well with this
RX8 231psi loved it
now have
"The One"~ 97 NSX T 3.0 Auto best car I have ever driven/owned
plus 1.6 Civic and a 1.8 mk 2 MX5
cannot see changing the current 3 for a long time
still have a yearning for a 40's or 50's MG, Riley or Singer
and of course the one I will never achieve a 30's Bugatti !!!!!!
you never know!

It IS quite a list, with a couple of rarities hidden in there, too!
Mine is much easier;

Couple of X1/9s
Couple of MX-5s.
Currently the three Hondas.

Honda DC5 - Woah more power, more style, needed messing with tho to get the right feel
Honda NSX - Uber car. so much quality, everything just feels right and well built.

To be honest there wasnt many I would say I missed that much. If I did choose it would probably be
X5 4.6is, just for comfort, performance and handling for a jeep.
Diablo, for performance yes, but for me its the most stunning thing on wheels
Amazon for being a proper 4x4
300ZX, cant really say I miss them with the amount I've had and actually looking at buying another lol
The 22B and Grale for me are 2 very different cars, the Grale felt a proper rally car for the road, where the 22b was the other way round, subaru was better build quality and faster and less lag, but grale was more fun and I thought better handling or a better feel from the car. Mine was Integrale Evoluzione II which was the last of them.

'Twas sad that Lancia could have become a sort of Italian Audi; only with character and fun-to-driveness. But the 'Grale was replaced by the Deadrat (I'd forgotten that one, but for the foregoing post!) and FIAT ruined the once-great marque.
I do hope Honda's new-found boring period doesn't last as long...

The Dedra was a model in it's own right, perceived as a BMW 3-series rival. It ran at the same time as the Integrale and the Evoution models. The Delta HPE came after the Evo and was based to some extent on the Dedra floorpan and used some of the Integrale and Dedra components....It wasn't that bad as a run-around but certainly no match in any way to the Integrale/Evo.

Ary, how was the F150? I've always wanted one in red, but don't think i can pull off the macho image... Would also love an original Mustang.
I haven't been around long enough to have many nice cars, i did the hot hatch thing up until i was about 21, since i've had a VX220 and M3 CSL. I made the VX too hardcore for the road, but really regret selling the CSL. It was spot on and prices have now gone up subsequently.

Exactly; it wasn't as if the Tipo (Tre) architecture was actually bad, it just missed the mark somehow. The 4WD Prisma was far prettier and more interesting than an Audi. It wasn't until it evolved into the Alfa 156 that the platform got improved, by which time Lancia had given up. They're now coming back with badge-engineered Chryslers, of course...

Mk2 Escort 1600 sport, red with stripes and janspeed
Mk1 Escort Mexico, yellow
1975 Carmen Beetle convertible, arrived in bits. My Dad and I rebuilt it during the winter.
1991 Peugeot 205 1.9 GTI, white with red stripe. Was like owning a spaceship when you're 18.
Fiat Strada 130 Abart, grey with red stripe. Was only 8 years old but had been restored already. Sounded great with the airbox off.
Mk4 escort Turbo, red. Great seats. Was hit by a guy in a metro overtaking on a blind bend.
Another Mk4 Escort turbo.
Renault 19 16v cab. Scuttle city, but quite nice to look at back then.
Fiesta Turbo, White with green stripe. Chipped and really Torquey, about 180 hp.
Lancia turbo, gold. Understeer city.
VW passat estate. First work car, gutless hell.
Volvo V70 estate x 2
Various bikes.
Porsche Boxster 3.2. Despite the critique, very good.
Honda NSX, 96 Targa, red, first intro into a car Which had never been on my radar.
2002 Honda NSX, LBB. felt like a very serious purchase at the time. Drove it back from the wirrell in the big storms a few year back.
Porsche 997 C2s. Wanted a change after nearly 5 years of NSX. Unfortunately this car didn't work on my favourite roads and didn't give me that buzz like the Honda.
2002 NSX, LBB, luckily found another car locally, same colour, age as the previous car.

Funny - mine came loose once, too. I overheated the brakes on a hot June day and the powdercoat melted. Takes over 200°C for that to happen, according to a PCer.

well I turn 40 in a couple of weeks so there's been quite a selection over the last 23 years. Highlights were my first Porsche, a 944 S2 cabriolet in 1995, such an easy car to drive, such linear power delivery but a little expensive to run. Then I had 5 E30 M3's inc 2 Sport Evo's. Amazing cars!! Then caught the 911 bug. First a 964 Jubilee model, then upgraded to a 996 GT3 MK1, so so fast, I got caught speeding at 101mph.... decided to get something slower, so bought a 2003 LBB NSX with 7500 miles on the clock! So easy to drive, such a great engine noise. Unfortunately LBB is a nightmare if you need bodywork. Sold it but always missed it. In the meantime I bought a 930 Speedster and sold it as had no power steering (had a bad neck). Replaced it with a 964 Speedster (very rare) as it had power steering. Six months later I found a low mileage 993 Turbo on Pistonheads, had always wanted a Turbo and this one was perfect. I love the wide rear arches (on women too). Had my perfect garage, two 911's but then Paul (who owns a black NSX) spotted the black NSX at Chiswick Honda. I had been badgering him for ages to sell his, so I had to buy it. Now I have 3 cars!! Ridiculous, but I can't bring myself to sell any of them!! Photos attached.

Ok - I am a secret NSX fan. I drove one from 1992 to 1996. It was an amazing car then. I covered over 50k miles in it and travelled from Boston to California twice in it and down to Florida for Spring Break also twice in it. Driving up interstate 95 from New Hampshire to Vermont where there are VERY few police cars, I could hold it at 150 mph all day long. Rock solid. Yes, Mark is right I have gotten myself a 458 recently and had a 430 Scuderia in the past and ran a F355 Spider for 5 years. If anything, my years with my NSX taught me that I could live with Supercars.
Marky, Marko, Mark, it is important that you understand my beloved Hondari NSX was ahead of its time in the early 1990s. The supercar game is moved on.... Much like how you moved on from all the women in your life. It is 2010 now and the only supercar to aspire to is; the Ferrari 458 which unlike the new car from Woking is indeed a normal aspirated sensation. The Ferrari 458 was developed by Michael Schumacher a 7 time F1 Champion.
I have seen you driving around Mayfair in a white Gallardo Spyder and a Ferrari 599. So..... Do us all a favor and STOP pretending to be a NSX fan when your heart is Italian. Also, stop putting those My Little Pony stickers on your Hondari.
Is this a Joke?
Marky
25-07-2010, 07:05 AM
yes, its my friend Kevin Y in HK who actually ran an NSX back in the 90's when he was studying in the US. He has placed an order for a F458 spider (delivery in 2012) and is driving me up the wall to get an Italian supercar. But I'm an NSX fan through and through. It is THE useable Supercar.
Gordon Murray
25-07-2010, 09:18 AM
Mark, it is true that I am hassling you to get an Italian Supercar. You now own and have owned pretty much everything else. Even you admitted that you were impressed and in awe of the Gallardo Spyder that you drove for a week. For me, I am open minded towards Supercars. I am impressed by all of them for their technical brilliance - this certainly includes the NSX which I still have a soft spot for. But, since the NSX's arrival it is impossible to ignore that the Supercar game has move on and up and now most Supercars can indeed by driven as daily commuters. The playing field has become so competitive that Honda wisely stopped their second NSX from being launched. It is also the reason why the Toyota LFA is such a flop in terms of performance. It is slower and less competent in every performance matrix compared to a box standard Ferrari 599. Guys, the NSX is a and will always be regarded as an exceptional achievement and an Icon of its time but if you are open minded - do drive some of the cars around today that were inspired by the NSX. The Audi R8 is the best example and even my 458 Italia has the NSX to thank.
However, in conclusion Mark you still owe it to yourself to step in the Dark Side and get the Italian Supercar that you always end up talking about.... Your beloved Holy Grail: 2008 Gallardo Spyder E-gear.

Capri 2.8i Tuned beast. Single exit Mike The Pipe exhaust, sounded great. Fast Ford featured.
Chevette x 3 - GLS, GL & L. Needs must due to unemployment! Value motoring! Managed to spin one!
Peugeot 205 GTi. Not my most favourite car.
Fiesta RS Turbo. Great car, handled well, fun motor.
Escort RS Turbo MK4. Became donor car for my next car....
Escort MK4 Genesis RWD conversion. 2.0 Cosworth turbo. Built from scratch. Loved it.
BMW E30 320i Tourer. Looked good with the 17" Kozei Sniper rims.
NSX. Waited years and considered all sorts before settling on the NSX. Made the right choice. Nearly 7 years on.

458 is a nice car, fo me one of the nicest Ferraris to come along in a while. I havent driven one yet but a friend of mine gets his RHD one in January/Feb, I have driven the California which for me, the only good part was the gearbox, rest was boring, the Maserati Granturismo S is a nicer car. I believe the gearbox is the same in the 458 which will make it an interesting drive.
Still, ferrari must have took there styling q's from Honda :)

The design languages look as different to me as italian is from japanese.
The F458 appears to have beautifully elegant A-pillars though. Just like an NSX. Why are modern Hondacuras so clumsy in that area?

With my job, i have had the luck to try most cars, i drove a MK5 R32, Merc ML320CDI and many others around for a week or so each before deciding to go for other things!.. the one car i really wanted was a gallardo, which i was thinking of trading the RS4 in against.. unfortunately I decided to get a huge mortgage instead :( and had to sell everything i had for the deposit!! and start again...
I have included the vans as they were used as daily runners half the time when between cars!
Have a couple of pics here... and sure there more in between there somewhere...

Certainly an interesting list from Richy. Dunno about best 5 but I'd trade all the rest, and probably my NSX, for the Carrera GT :)
Cheers

Wow. Tricky one, but assuming primarily road-use (yes, I know that's not a given, but you've got to start somewhere), and going on sheer driver involvement / fun / fitness for purpose*:-
- 'grale Evo3
- 22B
- NSX NA2
- 360CS
- 959 or Carrera GT
I'd want a few 'reserves' as well, in case I changed my mind ;)
- R33 (one of - JUN probably)
- Miura SV (so nearly put that in place of the CS above)
- RS200 Evo
- 997 GT3RS
Richy - which of that list do you genuinely regret selling (usually as good an indicator as any of how much a car got under the owner's skin)?
* As opposed to just "what's the most exotic".

It's a real tough one !
Off the top of my head.........
1. NSX-R
2. Porsche Carrera GT
3. Ferrari 360 CS
4. Audi R8
5. Lancia Integrale Evo 3
I know it reads like a list of the most exotic, but there is a reason why cars like this are 'exotic' and it is usually reflected in the way the drive.
My list for 'most fun' or 'biggest disappointments' etc would make more interesting reading

Yeah I'd go exotic, my top 5 would be...
1. Carrera GT
2. Muira SV
3. GT3 RS (997)
4. R8 V8
3. Ford GT
Sadly it's never gonna happen... but I can live with my humble NSX :)
Cheers
