Just arrived home and was washing my hands, looked out the window and seen this boyo land in the back yard after catching a small bird or some kind for lunch.

Was thinking that as we have some huge buzzard/hawk type birds that appear almost every day, but this is the first smaller one I have seen and this close too.

Looking good, nothing like nature at work. I get a few different types here as we are in the country and in between the mountains and the sea. Lately got a lovely fox too doing the rounds.

I agree with you Sudesh - looks to me like a juvenile male Eurasian (Northern) sparrow hawk accipiter nisus. Or it could be a Merlin Falcon, again Northern Eurasian Falco columbarius/aeasalon subaesalon - difficult to tell from your photos.
The eye colour (yellow) tends to support the sparrow hawk identification.

Thanks for the info nick.

We have [what I think] is a family of very large Buzzard's [I think]

One in particular is around 3ft tall with a wing span of around 6ft, its the most amazing looking thing I have seen floating on the drafts. I have field beside my house that has a boundary wall; just about every sunny/clear morning over December, it would sit on wall heating its feathers in the sunlight, it was just incredible to see, especially why the wings were out full and it was just sitting there.

We had a merlin in our back garden last year, and unless the N.Ireland ones have different plumage, then this isn't 'brown' enough to be a merlin.

That said, I'll bow to your clearly superior knowledge!
