Gran Turismo 5 has finally been released, it's been a long time coming, hope it's as good as all the hype.
Don't get much time to play games but I have a copy winging its way to me.
Anyone else getting a copy?
I believe it's got the full Nordschleife circuit in this version.

I am seriously considering a PS3 just for this game. Do I need to get the higher memory or is it academic???

By higher memory I think you are referring to the size of the hard drive size?
I wouldn't worry too much as you can always upgrade your disk at a later date if you need to.

Cool - dunno much about these consoles, but I'm comfortable swapping out memory on 'pooters so I guess it's easy enough :)

I have it on pre-order with Amazon. I read that the release date was 24th so I'm hoping to get it late this week?
My PlayStation Network identity is markc555 if anyone fancies a race or two :)

NSX's are available both new and secondhand but you won't be able to afford one for a while.
I'm working my way through the "Beginners" and "Amateur" series in GT mode. Bought a Civic Type R (EK) as my first car :)
I've watched the opening titles/credits several times now... epic

made a real boo-boo for the classic races ... bought an ole honda with 44bhp ... cost we nearly 100k of credits to get it up to 90bhp! still cant win a race with it so had to buy a 79 civic and mod it to deth instead
so low in funds ... at this stage will go to dealer and buy an NSX-R in Indy Yellow for the 116k ask price when i get the funds! :)

Slow (snow) day on Sunday so I had me some quality GT5 time.
Started with a bit of GT Mode and earned enough money to buy a secondhand 1997 NSX Type S (IOP), identical to my own car, and a 2004 NSX (LBB). Saved them as Favourites and then went to Arcade mode.
Raced both the NSX's with no modifications multiple times at Le Mans on the 2009 circuit with no chicanes. In my hands on a good clean lap the Type S is on average 7 seconds a lap quicker (4min 27sec) than the 2004 car (4min 34secs). Also the Type S pulls 170mph on the main straight while the 2004 will only pull 167mph. The Type S is more tail happy though, especially on braking/lift off and I've ended up in the barriers more than a few times.
I'm going to earn some more money and buy a early car and a NSX-R and see how they compare.
Also raced some of the standard Arcade cars...
Audi R8 V8 - 4min 14sec, 185mph
BMW M3 Coupe (e92) - 4min 18sec, 183mph
Lexus ISF - 4min 15sec, 186mph
Aston DB9 - 4min 16sec, 184mph
Yes, I know I've got too much time on my hands :) Anyone fancy corroborating those times?
Cheers

I haven't got that far into the game yet. I'm yet to complete the A Spec "Professional level and am at level 12.
Bought a 1991 Acura NSX (Berlina Black), a 1999 S Zero (Quantum(?) Gray) and a 2002 NSX-R (New Formula Red) last night. Managed one race in the '91. Seems to lap in about 4min 39sec and tops out at 164mph.
I'll be out in the S Zero and NSX-R this evening but my guess is that they'll lap in just over and just under 4mins 20sec respectively :)

...earned enough money to buy a secondhand 1997 NSX Type S (IOP), identical to my own car
I bought a 97 NSX (unlike the S2000, they don't do a euro version so I picked USDM over JDM to retain the black canopy) and then bought the same type-S so as to acquire IOP to paint my car...
BUT when I sold the Type-S (sorry Mark!), I can no longer use my IOP-painted NSX. It's still in the garage, I can bring its details up and even see a demo with it, but I can't select it.
So beware, if you repaint any car make sure you hang on to the donor that the colour came from... or else you're stuffed

you should be OK mate, a lot of copies available as pre-owned already. I guess a lot of punters think it has not been worth the wait after all.
As for me I am enjoying it, but I olny play it when I can. Not on it constantly so when i do play i kill a few hours
did everybody get the 600MB download done yet?
took close to an hour for it to install and update my PS3. I let it run during last night's new series of Top Gear
It adds a 'seasonal event' and cars on, plus there is loadsa credits to be earned. It only runs till early january so get plenty of game time in to earn some serious cash!!! :)
the new events are tricky enough. I have done a couple on my stint last nite. Got 2nd in the 1st race as i bought a fiat 500, but the 1st place guy is way out front.
the 2nd race involves buying a CR-Z and racing in Japan, again my best result for this so far is 4th but i am really close to getting 3rd spot ... these are tuff challenges and even for such low rankings you get a good amount of credits ... so will help buying, modifying an NSX-R down the line!!
Be careful when modding your cars for these new events, read the entry requirements, you cant mess too much with power output or weight reduction, so makes it that more difficult.
you are able to pick up a pick up truck in the seasonal car dealership so make sure you buy that to help finish off the events in Ametuer level folks.
Enjoy, should kill a few hrs over the Crimbo period. not as if i am able to enjoy the NSX much in real life if this weather continues over the course. might as well try to race my virtual NSX!
regards

Update on times...
1991 Acura NSX (Berlina Black) - 4min 39secs, 164mph
1997 Type S (IOP) - 4min 27sec, 170mph
1999 S Zero (Quantum(?) Gray) - 4 min 28sec, 169mph
2004 NSX (LBB) - 4min 34sec, 167mph
2002 NSX-R (New Formula Red) - 4min 24sec, 172mph
2007 GTR - 4min 8secs, 195mph
Seems the NSX pecking order is fastidiously observed by Polyphony  The correct gearing is also observed. I just need a early JDM car and NA1 NSX-R to complete this virtual test.
I overestimated the speed of the S Zero and NSX-R. In fact according to the spec sheet the S Zero I have makes a few less horsepowers than the S. Maybe mileage related as both were secondhand??
All cars bog standard, no mods. Lap times are for average, clean laps with no slip streaming. Same for top speeds. (Le Mans 2009, no chicanes)
Nobby, Yes I have done the big 1.05 update. Not tried the seasonal events but will be trying them soon.
Cheers

Had my first crack at the game at Mercedes Benz World today! It was pretty limited, i could only drive an SLC at the 'Ring alongside similar cars. Have to say though, with the GT5 steering wheel and race seat, it was harder than the real thing!
It was brilliant that you actually get oversteer in the game, previously impossible! Once i started looking at the actual speed, i realised i was going into corners way to fast. Slowing it down a bit, i got into and was very impressed with the realism.

Well, the good news I was talking out of my top hat... It turns out I couldn't use the car because I'd set it up to be shared with friends... This precludes using it yourself, but the car is available again when you stop sharing. Phew!

I would query the accuracy of those numbers.
Oi, are you saying I'm a crappy driver Noel ;)
Actually there have been some developments. Some of "my" cars were making odd power figures e.g. my S Zero was rated at 268hp and my 1995 JDM car 259hp.
Both of these had some 30K plus miles on them so I took them to the Workshop and had the engines rebuilt. With refreshed engines they came out at 295hp and 283hp respectively.
My NSX-R, Type S and 2004 car were brought/won new with 0 miles on the clock, they make 282hp, 274hp and 265hp respectively! Which would explain why the 2004 car is a bit slower on the straight. As these are new cars you can't rebuild/refresh their engines.
I'm keeping all my NSX's standard i.e. no upgrades, to make comparisons fair. I'll try and buy a secondhand facelift car at some point and refresh the engine.
Also still need the NA1 NSX-R and a facelift Type S.
The refreshed S Zero now pulls 173mph in clean air on the main straight making it the fastest so far :)
Of course it's only virtual racing not the real world!

Started with the Miata(MX5) and just bought an '02 NSX type R...

you can't help yourself not to tinker with the cars in this game; if you dont its tuff to win stuff

One could argue that pitching the NSX into a corner, lifting off sharply, reapplying the power, winding off enough lock to keep the car in a steady drift with one hand while waving to the ladies with another could have different outcomes on the console compared to real life!!
