New Clutch Required?

I'm looking at a '96 manual with 42k on the clock. It's never had a new clutch. Other than if it's slipping, is there a way to tell how much life there is left in the clutch?

New clutch and bearings etc will be pushing £1k (source from USA or VTEC Direct), fitting c.£400.
