It looks dated already to me ... I get the Dino and the F40, and I think the FF is the best Ferrari for years but everything in this segment since the 355 just hasn't done anything for me, especially with each one becoming more reliant on electronic brains (rather than human) just to keep the on the road ... IMHO of course ...

Dated how? don't think so. The FF looks a dogs dinner. 355 is a massively over rated bland fest that falls apart at the seems. Electronic control is overstated. Apart from that, I agree. :D ;)

Dont agree that it looks dated either. I'm not a massive modern day Ferrari fan, but the 458 is very nice, and it sounds beautiful when the exhaust opens up!

I wish they could make that switchover sound less artificial

This sounds much more organic

I imagine they do have after market systems for the 458 too ;), but then you don't get the advantage of being able to cruise quietly with those.

They are massive, aren't they? I think if they were smaller & cuter like the Dino/246/308, they'd be so much nicer.

I'm worried unduly by a V8 with three exhaust pipes - that's just unnatural!

But I hope he has good luck with the car & enjoys it immensely - I'm sure I could suffer its foibles!

PS; today's moment of stupidity was momentarily thinking that the 'private plate' looked a bit cheapskate on such a car. But then I realised it's only over here that cheapskates install Irish plates instead of personalised ones!

They do - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NVIw7q-6k6c :) I've always loved the sound of a Tubi and a flat-plane V8 (never really thought they sounded all that amazing on the NSX, though...)

I do love the sound of the Enzo with Tubi - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-y9GTf2dsU4 or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zItaYEGiErw

Saw 3 of them in the flesh at Goodwood last weekend...and I'm no longer convinced. The 458 is a car that photos really well, but in the flesh looks a little 'unresolved' - like it was designed by committee, none of whom talked to each other - some beautiful details, but no cohesive 'flow'...

The MP4 that was there...well, exactly the opposite - photos look bland, but in the flesh it looks very cohesive with a 'timeless' feel to the looks. Some great ergonomic details too, like the sills coming away with the doors...

Finally someone else understands and can see the quality that is designed into the MP4. Maybe others will also start to see this and understand (whether you agree or not) wny I think this is the natural succesor to the NSX and how maybe an NA3 might have looked ... but I'd still rather it had Aston style doors instead of the scissors.

Totally agree on the 458 vs MP4 - I'd have the Macca every day of the week. I do think the Ferrari looks great, but I think the McLaren has more to it - the design, the technology, etc - I happen to think it looks better, but even if it didn't, I'd still reckon it to be a better proposition.

And Paul: you're so wrong. Scissor doors are cool if they're there (at the outset, ie not some aftermarket "improvement").
End of discussion :)

Agree re the McLaren - I'd have one all day, every day over the 458. Landmark car, in my opinion

They had a few 458s at Cliveden today, I couldn't help but notice how unresolved they looked....
haha, yeah right!, they're gorgeous.

I'm sure McLaren and 458 are great cars, all the McLaren fans will like Ron's car and the Tifosi in turn will like the nice.. oops, I mean Luca's one.

They sound a bit digital to me, compared to the analogue 355. I wonder if some of the sound has been lost thanks to DI - remember them saying something similar when the 997.2 came out.
