Hi Everyone,
I am the new owner of R11 NSX (as of 2 months ago), and following some great advice from this forum, thought I'd give everyone an update on progress so far.
I saw the car, early in the summer, on sale on autotrader for £25k. It's a Charlotte Green, 1996 NSX-T manual 3.0. I went down to see it and it was by no means perfect, but seemed pretty genuine, with no signs of uneducated 'tinkering'! Over the course of several months, the asking price fell quite heavily until I felt it was at a level that was worth a punt.
Despite the following points that I knew about, I bought it, at what I hope was a good price! - time will tell!

1) Blowing back box causing drone in the cabin between 2-3k RPM
2) Smoke coming from engine bay after a run
3) Taking an age to get up to operating temperature
4) Climate control fan giving all or nothing
5) Stereo not sounding as good as a BOSE system should

To solve 1) following research and advice from here, I bought one of Ary's 'zero drone' back boxes. Big thanks to Ary for going the extra mile to get it to the garage on time! Unfortunately I didn't have time to take any pics of it before mounting. Whilst at it, decided to replace the headers with DC Sports versions from Dali (Pictured). 1033710338
Luckily I didn't have the same problem that I subsequently discovered some others have had in their dealings with Mark Johnson (MD of Dali). I also bought new OEM gaskets, rubber hangers and O2 sensors for the exhaust system, Transistor for the blower, Thermostat - all from the USA. 10339
For reference, anyone choosing to change headers, my mechanic (very capable, but no previous dealings with an NSX), said it took 1.5hrs to change the rear bank headers, and 5.5hrs for the front bank, which I didn't think was too bad. He did say that it would have been much more difficult/impossible without a high lift though.
The change is like night and day, Ary's exhaust is spot on - it looks better than OEM, is as refined at low rpm as OEM, but sounds better at higher revs. Really pleased. And the headers dramatically improve response, and probably power (without rolling road, difficult to judge really!)10336
2) Was caused by a slight oil leak on the rear bank cylinders. The car had been layed up for a good few months whilst for sale - we suspect that oil had acculmulated and was burning off during the test drives. Mechanic advised to avoid disturbing any seals and leave alone, Since the oil burnt off, I've had no further problem and oil level and pressure remains normal.
3) Thermostat change fixed this - now warms up nice and quickly
4) Unfortunately, changing the transistor didn't work, so the CCU board is with Kaz now - hopefully that will do the trick.
5) Centre speaker not working, so sent the underfloor Bose unit off to Kaz, for some of his magic. Will tackle door speakers at another date as they are working OK for now.

Since buying it another couple of issues have come to light, which someone may be able to help with:
When unlocking with the remote, the car sometimes keeps trying to unlock itself; clicking for 7-10 seconds after the button is pressed. Suspect a sticky relay somewhere - any idea where this might be found?
When starting (intermittently, and always when cold) the engine sometimes turns over approx. twice as long as would be normal, before catching. It always does catch, idles smoothly, and has never stalled, so sounds unlike the main relay issue that others have suffered?

All of the above are pretty minor faults really, and am really enjoying this car - especially the noise! Coming from an S2000, the pace and refinement of the NSX are much better. Overall am very chuffed with my purchase!
Once I get everything fixed, will give it a good polish up, and post some more photos. Thanks everyone, for the warm welcome, and useful advice thus far.

Congratulations!

I thought it deserved a good home & wondered why it took so long to sell.

I think your haggling will pay for those bits that need doing - hopefully.

The clicking relay is a known fault - Kaz is yer man.

Mine always takes an extended crank when it's been sitting for a long while. No idea why. The S2000 starts before you've pressed the button, so the difference is perhaps exaggerated somewhat.

Enjoy your new car.

Sounds like a typical example with the usual faults.....best check the crank pulley next!

Congratulations on your purchase :) I'm looking forward to some proper photos.

Thanks for the kind words and enjoy your NSX ownership you are on roll.

As said by others check the Crank Pulley, but don't fret over it.

A lot of NSX owners get all paranoid about every little thing, just enjoy it, is not a brand new car so expect some niggles, is part of the fun. :)

One of the advantages of a clean engine bay is you can poke your finger in the back of the pulley to check the rubbery bit is still inside the steely bit when you check the oil.

Quick update - received ccu and Bose amp back from Kaz. What a star that guy is! Have fitted both, and climate control and audio now working as they were designed to. Big thank you to Kaz for sorting these issues.
Next on the list is service & mot, including new crank pulley, then a full detail when I'll be able to post some photos up.
Still having problems with the central locking- any ideas anyone?
Thanks all.

That would depend on what value Mark put on the customs note ;). It's basically 20% of that value.

Well, i've only had them a few weeks and didn't really get to know the car without them. Also changed them at the same time as the exhaust so difficult to tell on the noise front. From a mechanics point of view, he said they fit a treat, and as I said in my post were relatively quick to install, even for a non nsx mechanic. A specialist would probably knock at least a couple of hours off the install time I would think. Quality seems pretty good visually, time will tell on that one!
I would recommend them as they are not too expensive, but probably best to get an opinion from someone who's had the nsx for a while, then made the change...
Best of luck whatever you decide, let me know if you need further info...

Not so decent though when it comes to taking your money and then not bothering to send you the items you have paid for.

Touch wood, I have NOT had any issues like this with MJ. So far he has been brilliant so long may that continue.

I understand that some folk like yourself on here have had issues, but I hope my current levels of service continue with Dali. I can only comment on my service to date with Dali and on that basis i have no hesitation in recommending him to other owners out there.

I'm with Nobby on this one, albeit quite wary. Have seen the negative threads, and the problems people have do seem to concern special orders and stuff not held in stock. I am hopeful that as long as ordering 'in stock' stuff, it should be ok...

Hi Hazman.....Not sure where you are in the country but considering you have used service in Shrewsbury I guess you live fairly close... we live in Cheshire not far from Shropshire boarder . Must meet up. Kingsley

Hazman Thanks for the recommendation, I will try them. Are their charges OK? Bob

Pretty reasonable I thought...see their website...

I see what you mean, very reasonable charges. If they can remove "95% of my cars blemishes" I will be amazed, even 50% and I would be impressed! Bob

Hi I just came across this thread when looking for pictures of Ary's ZD exhaust but I read this about the unlocking problem and I have this too. Did you find a solution to this Hazman?

Would love to be able to give you an answer...as per previous thread, had an incident with a deer and in order to fix, the door card was removed. When it was put back, problem had disappeared...no idea why. Sorry.

If your door card was removed, then that means your interior door handle had to come off too. You're door handle has the manual button to lock/unlock on it, and in order to fully remove the door card, you disconnect the button just behind the interior door handle.

Maybe in some way, by disconnecting the button and then reconnecting, it has helped with the issue. Can't reall say I sure?

BUT! A very simple cost affective test to try, would be to do the above. Disconnect the button on driver and passenger side too, then lock/unlock the car via your remote and see if what happens!

I would also leave the windows down just for the added safety the car doesn't lock itself out etc, don't think that's possible anyway, but better to keep yourself covered, or you could just sit in the car and press the remote and see if the issue continues or has disappeared.

If it has disappeared then start by connecting the buttons back up, one at a time while testing and see how you get on. While your there, may be worth looking at the condition of the connectors themselves, making sure the pins etc are all nice and clean. Wouldn't be uncommon for the weather sheet behind the card to perish and rip and let moisture in.

Always worth a try, will cost nothing other than your time to have a check.
