Is this a car with JDM short gears 5 speed box originally?

It suppose to be a UK 1996 car.

I don't think you can go with the engine number. Even with the trans no., it will be difficult. The Swiss/Europe cars delivered from 1995 on have the shorter gears for sure. I'm not sure about the UK cars. If you really want to be sure you can count the revolutions of the driveshafts while turning the input shaft in 2nd. Or you can ask the previous owner when he had to shift in 2nd at redline.

Can this be done when the gearbox is separated from the engine...as it is at the moment?

This can be done with gearbox split from the engine, just turn the input shaft and count the revs of one of the driveshafts. I'm not sure about how you would select second gear off the car looking at the linkage mechanism, I've never tried that.

Get the gearbox casing number to Kaz though, I'm sure it will get you the info required.

based on the info I kindly received from Kaz when I queried gearbox specs and numbers the box you are asking about does appear to be a 95-96 5 Speeder which would therefore suggest has the shorter gears....

SR8M-6100001~ : 5MT. 95 & 96 model

SR8M-7000001~ : 6MT. 97, 98, 99 model. -E60

SR8M-7100001~ : 6MT. 00, 01, 02, 03 model. -E61

SR8M-8000001~ : 6MT. 04, 05 model. -E61

My 5 speeder s/n was SR8M 6101145 which follows the format and as you know my car is a 96 and it had short gears before I swapped it for the 6 speeder

Hi, Silver Surfer.
Just a follow up on our email exchange.

Even with the trans #, there is no guarantee that the internal gears were not replaced in the past and this includes the final ratio as well.


For UK (and possibly for other European model as well….) model, I think Honda started introducing the JDM ratios from 93 model onwards but due to the difference in the wording of the ‘year model’, better to have the trans #.

Presuming nothing was replaced on the MT box that you were referring to, it should have the same ratio as the JDM.


For your reference, presuming it was indeed from the UK model, the engine # in your OP would be from the 95 model and not from the 96 one.


If it was from US Acura model, then I think the ratio was almost always longer than JDM apart from the 5th gear but I don’t have enough knowledge on their ratio changes over the years so could be wrong.
