Hello all,

Just having a read around the topic of NSX ownership. I don't own one yet, but am quite (very) interested in changing from my tank (aka Saab 9-5 Aero) to get back into something with some sole and charactor.

Its not going to be a quick purchase, looking towards Oct 2006 time when the insurance on the Saab is due for renewal etc., but at least that will give me some time to research the NSX fully.

Coming from an Audi quattro Turbo (ur), and an Impreza modified for competition the Saab was a bit of a "sensible" purchase. With 250bhp as standard it's no slouch, but it doesn't handle at ALL, and requires written warning before making any corners !

Does anyone commute daily in their NSX ? Potentially it would be a daily use car unless I get a daily "hack" as well.

Cheers

Mark

You may know that the intention of Honda was to make an every day supercar, you could literally let your granny drive it and not worry about her. Well, in the dry anyway :)

If you're used to running a Scoob then you won't have any trouble maintaining and servicing an NSX either. The only problem is the tyres really, because of the somewhat extreme geometry sometimes 6,000 miles is as good as you'll get!

From a driving point of view, it's hard to say what a modified Scoob is like in comparison as it depends what state it's in. The NSX certainly is forgiving for a mid-engined car but you still cannot take liberties with it. The boxer engine makes a fantastic burble but that is definetly rivalled by the Honda's shriek, it really does sound amazing!

The 3.0 NSX doesn't have power steering, which gives fantastic feedback but then you also get tiny wheels, less performance and are missing a gear. The automatic is dog slow and i personally think the targa wanders from Honda's pure sportscar ethos.

If i were you, i'd go for a test drive. I'm sure you'll be impressed...

I know approximately what I want.
3.2, 6sp ~ None targa

Early days, but bizzarely it was my father who suggested the NSX. I was saying that the Saab was dull and I was bored of it already and I wanted something with more charactor again. Obviously it would have to have parental approval (I'm 34 !).

Parents kinda have cool facilities to make working on own cars easier. The 2 post lift is ace.

Downloaded the 1991 service guide from nsxprime and Dad read the cambelt changing guide ~ was very impressed with the thoroughness of the engine in that all the timing markings are on the cam etc making a belt change much easier.

Impreza was a Group A engined thing running around 28psi boost with rudimentary anti-lag. Running costs were insance, it wrecked a turbo every 6 months (hybrid unit) and needed a new AP Paddle clutch as often.

Now compete in Yellow Pug, with brother in MK1 Escort.

Love the Escort.

Yes, that Escort is MINT! Is that a factory Pug colour?

Pug is Volvo T5R yellow.

Escort is quite tidy and bloody quick in its class, however this wasn't always the case, during competition in 2003 it was rolled heavily at 3 Sisters circuit in Wigan during a sprint. Severely damaged about every panel, but it was rebuilt with blister arches to look even better than it did previously.

Hi welcome to the board!

I have used mine as a daily driver for the last 6 months, it is a 3.2 Coupe which had 13,000 on the clock when I got it and now has 25,000. It has been an absolute pleasure to do the daily stuff in, clutch is nice and easy, visibility is fantastic, perhaps even better than my Civic Type-R and miles better than the S2000 it replaced. I think the truly fantastic thing about these cars is that they are Honda's (for a daily driver). Costs since I got mine have been swapping to a full set of Eagle F1's for the wet weather, which have been amazing (previous Pilot Sports had 6mm tread left on the back after 6,000 miles too) and a minor service which set me back around the £150 mark (36,000 mile service).

My advice would be make the most of the fact that there are more than usual for sale at the moment and go and try each variation. As you'll see in posts form James (Papalazarou) the compromise of the Targa isn't half what it can be portrayed as, so I think the best way is to drive them...once you hear that sound behind your left ear you'll be hooked...I promise!

Sounds naff but I still look back with a smile when I walk away after parking it up - and I haven't had one nasty / jealous remark, just lots of oohs and ahhs from old men to little kids! Also with this website you do actually feel liek you're part of a little community, and the collective knowledge is far far greater than you'll find in 99% of Honda dealers (to be expected though) but really helps too!

If you've ever in Derby or Bromsgrove PM me and you can have a closer look! Sorry to go on...

Cheers,

Matt.

Yes I can only echo the above, I use mine daily on a 150 mile round trip Motorway, twisties, and town driving. Since I had the clutch replaced it's been so easy to live with. I've only had "her" 5 months but have put about 10,000 miles on :D Highlight was a trip to Southern Germay in the summer, what a drive 8)

Oh, mine is an early 3.0 man and now approaching 85,000 miles. Still sweet tho

Good luck in your deliberations, hope you are persuaded, and check back here soon.

Mark,

Where abouts in the country are you?

Honda Revolutions have lots of meets all over the country and have quite a few NSX owners amongst the ranks - may be worth coming along to get a closer look-see.

I usually take my NSX to the meets at Gaydon (where there will be other NSXs too), the Sherburn meet (near Leeds - was a new shape there too last time) and then I usually decide closer to the time for the other meets whether I take the NSX or the CRX.

If you are over Wigan way, then perhaps worth checking the regular NW social meet (2nd Monday every month) at Mascrat Manor Pub, Warrington, just off J21 on M6. Meet starts 19.30
Not sure if any NSXs attend that one as it isn't one I get to myself.

If you say where you are though I could let you know the nearest meet.

I'm in Cheshire (Northwich), not that far from M6 J19 so J21 is literally up the road for me.

Daily commute is around 50 miles per day, on the A556 / M56 , buts a bit of a pain but around 40 mins in traffic. If I can do it in an Impreza running a paddle clutch it should be possible in anything to be honest !

The more and more I think about it.... NSX sounds perfectally usable. Two Mills isn't that far either should it need to get it serviced :)

Just need to scrimp and save a tad more to get what I want !

oh and Greybloke, VFR Vtec sits in my garage too. It's only right to have a Honda V4 and a V6 :)

Cheers folks

Two Mills is a good dealership - I am sure they would let you have a test drive too to make sure the car is for you (and give you the incentive to start saving  )

Would be worth coming to a meet before you get ready to buy - plenty of time so perhaps wait for the warmer months (or Gaydon since there will be lots there)

You know it makes sense  but you need a V twin as well (ok so mines a duke but that makes a nice trio of machines)

The cars I looked at aside, I saw two NSX's on the road last year and one of them was Jim's when we met up at Cribbs.
They really are exclusive in that sense.
I agree with Matt; the noise it makes, the feeling of community and the positive feedback from people who see it is great. (the latter points probably a bit shallow, but who cares!)
I think though, that if you buy an NSX you will become very attached to it and spend way too much time driving it cleaning it and looking through this forum!
you must drive it though, don't put it away in an oxygen tent for half the year.

Good luck,

James.

Hello Mark!

I have driven mine 14,000 miles in 18 months of ownership,
and it has never let me down.

I have 2 cars, the other is a toyota rav-4, which although reliable,
has proved not to be as reliable as the NSX
( and just a little bit more fun to drive!!).

I also agree with all the points made above about rarity/exclusivity,
and the smile it puts on your face when you look back at it after
parking it up :D

18 months into ownership, and I am enjoying it even more now than I did when I bought it.

If you do go for a pre-3.2 car, please note that unlike what
was stated by Rob above, the later 3.0L model did actually
have power steering and bigger wheels
(16 front and 17 back, replacing 15/16 on the original 3.0L).

Start saving you wont regret it
