Hi Everyone,
I have just started the re-commissioning work on my `99 Imola Orange 3.2 - previously owned by AR. As already mentioned, the car will go through a full mechanical overhaul including engine, brakes, wheels etc. followed by bodywork (including stripping and checking the work done back in `06 following its write-off rebuild) including full paint, then interior and front and rear bay detailing - along with a thousand other jobs that no doubt will pop up along the way.....
The objective is to take the car back to as close to original speck as possible (only exception being the 18" wheels - they can stay for the time being). Previous owners have "personalised" the car with features such as privacy glass, black rear lights, black roof, body coloured brakes etc. - its cool if thats your thing but for me, the NSX just looks right from the factory.
I`m planning to keep you all up-to-date with progress and pics - not always possible as time is, as ever, tight.
First up, following a good tip from NSXGB, a nice present of parts arrived from the States so we could get things started:

Then to kick things off, my mechanic got stuck in on the brakes - discs, pads and clean, check + fresh fluids, however, check the home paint job!!!!!

The good news was all the pistons were really good - pushed in with light thumb pressure, so just fresh pads, discs and fluids required.

You are saving the pics about the right resolution but when you upload them from your PC to the forum they will appear as thumbnails. If you host the pics on your own web space somewhere, you will be able to display them full size within your post. That's how I understand it anyway...

The fronts are 17`s, rears 18`s - they need a refurb + new tyres - though the front tyres are quite new, they are one of those generic makes, so they have to go - I`ve always liked semi-soft Avons so will probably go for them with a 35 profile - though the front/rear sizes will be a pain to match.
Imola Orange - the finest colour ever to grace a Supercar - not to mention the fastest.....
AR - I`m on the Surrey/Sussex border - any paperwork would be great - keep a hold of it for the moment and maybe we can meet up when the car is sorted at an NSX meeting?
Engine work is started today - going to try to get over there with the camera later on....

Had a look at progress today - working on cam belt, water pump and crank shaft pulley - interestingly, someones already been into the cam housing as a bolt was missing inside (grainey out of phocus pic was supposed to show which one - suggests either a proper cam belt inspection or a belt change - just they missed a bolt! Other than that, all looks good with no evidense of cooked/contaminated oils & deposits.

Ah, colour choice - I had noticed when looking up codes that Imola Orange went through a change at some point - I will be keeping the stock colour as I`m not painting the engine bay.
Can anyone let me know the correct colour code for the `99 IOP, plus what the correct code would have been for black wheels at that time?

I thought they were available in black under the Custom Order Scheme at some point - may have got that mixed up with grey though....
The wheels on mine are black - they will be refurbed in black, figured it would be good to get a Honda code - maybe the roof black code?

The OEM colour for wheels was Solaris silver NH536M. The anthracite was only available JDM Custom order plan.
Privacy glass film is removed by heating it up with a gun & peeling it off.

For the body colour code, you can find it (if it’s still on there) above the door striker when you open the driver side door.
Also, our member Sudesh posted this useful info and it is on the ‘sticky’ section of the Technical Forum.

The black coloured wheel was indeed available as part of ‘custom order plan’.
It was introduced at ‘Step.5’ of the plan around 95/96 together with other two wheel colours such as ‘Formula Red’ and ‘Indy Yellow Pearl’.
Regarding the black colour, it was only described as ‘Black Metallic’ and within Honda Colour code, there are at least two codes that includes this word.
The paint shop should be able to find it for you.
You may want to test it first to see the balance against the body colour.
‘Privacy Glass’???
If you are referring to the smoked film on the glass, you can try the heater gun first followed by the glue remover but that’s well known method so probably we are talking about something different…..

Just an update to say that the mechanical/service work is now completed - fired up first time with a new new battery - always a relief after major work!
Passed the MOT first time as well - advisors on rear tyres (expected, all 4 tyres being replaced at the same time as wheel refurb) and the MOT chap pointed out "some plonker has sprayed your rear lenses black - they`re too dark" - laquer coming off soon!
Off to confirm stuff with the paint/bodyshop later today.

Darn, The bodyshops backed up for a month - booked in but a bit of a wait.
A question - does anyone know how the outer roof trims that follow the window are attached? Bodywork chap wants to remove them as part of the strip down and thinks they may be bolted from the inside - thought I`d check before he starts pulling it apart.

You have to remove the rear pillar ( remove special nust from inside ) remove the weatherstrip and then you remove the screws.
The manual might give you a little more info but in short, no you can't just pull it off.

Not sure exactly which parts you are referring to but if it is the Windshield Upper Molding (http://www.nsxcb.co.uk/showthread.php?6286-NSX-Health-Check-Service/page4&p=59462#post59462) as in my NSX Technical and Service Information Index 02 thread, then you just need to partially remove the weatherstrip and then remove the front pillar retainer.
You can see some photos from the above link.
From my experience, you will spend more time on cleaning the residue of adhesive tape than the actual installation of the upper fastener and the molding.
If we are talking about the same parts, then following TSB in the Wiki section of NSX Prime will provide your body shop with some idea.

Theres a lot of bodywork that has to come off an NSX to do a proper job....

As I`m waiting on the bodyshop, thought I`d crack on with the wheels. As mentioned in another thread, its got aftermarket 17" front, 18" rear with the wrong (45) profile on the front - plenty of tread but naff make and advisery MOT just passed on the rear. All four tyres show good even wear, especially the almost bald rears - a good thing as its a good indicator of body alignment. Ordered up a new set of 215/40/17`s for the front, 265/35/181s for the rear, all Avon ZZ3`s - a tyre which I have always got on well with.
Booked it in with The Wheel Specialist in East Grinstead - 01342 300 687,eastgrinstead@thewheelspecialist.co.uk (eastgrinstead@thewheelspecialist.co.uk) - Said I would give them a plug as they did a superb job. One rim was our of shape so needed welding and machining so the car was left with them for 48 hrs - would have been same day if no welding!
On arrival pics - the rims looked worse in real life as the paint had worn through:

Ok, the cars now being worked on at the bodyshop - they were delayed working on a big old yank that was in for the full works.
The car itself looked OK at a distance, but up close the panelfit was not up to scratch and the Imola Orange Pearl was not a perfect match following previous repairs - anyone who`s worked on pearl paints will tell you its almost impossible to match - one pass of the gun too much and its out! Coupled with a few scratches and scuffs it was felt a full strip down, check and paint was in order.
A couple of the chip/panel fit areas showing chips and paint blemishes:

I missed the start of the work as I was away, but guys stripped the front down to check and report the work carried out after AR`s crash back in `06.
As suspected, the frontal area took a big impact - whoever repaired the NSX back in `06 did an OK job, but did use some second-hand panels - the wings look to have been new, the original front chassis legs were retained, but the front bumper, bonnet, front valence, cross panel, both pop-up lights, left hand light recess and couple of other small front inner sections have come from a red car. This was expected as any examination of the car would have shown the odd red chip etc.
The welding work was carried out pretty well - reasonably neat with no cracking showing - there is also evidence of some of the small inner wing sections having been "dressed" - again, not bad - I had not spotted it but the trained eye of the bodyshop chaps pointed it out. The bodyshop mechanics felt that, though the use of second hand panels is not best practice, they were showing no signs of problems and felt they were best left alone - also the key stuctual areas were all good. Appreciate in a perfect world I would chop out and replace any second-hand panels, but on discussion with bodywork chaps it was felt (with much releif to an already strained wallet) that it was fine to leave them in place.
They had to strip off all the panels from the doors onwards to get the panel fit correct - very, very tricky on an NSX due to them being hand-built. I showed up with the camera during some trial fitting - I was quite pleased with the results so far. Apparently, when painting pearl on a complete car the best thing to do is to almost, but not quite, fit the panels - so they are only an inch or two away - this allows the painter to spray the paint as if its assembled for the match to be perfect - this should occur over the next couple of weeks.

Thanks for showing. We rarely see a proper 'honest' rebuild thread on this site. In fact we don't. The revised panel fit looks really good and I'm sure it'll come together very well this time.
It's good news about the chassis legs also. They're pretty expensive and difficult to replace. Hopefully you'll get along to some of the meets later this year or next year when all is finished.

As James says, good to see a detailed build and refresh and that you are prepared to do it properly. Did you decide to go with the original Imola Orange or as part of the refresh, update is subtely to the slighter more vibrant New Imola Pearl? Either way I trust you will retained the black top ...

Yep - right hand pop-up had a slight foul on the bonnet - all sorted now though!
Paul - going with the original IOP shade - I prefer the slightly more subtle shade. - Black roof - that addition is great if your NSX had it when new, if not..... its gotta go - IOP all the way.

Nice to see the delicate touch of aligning each panels.
Each NSX was hand built with different number of shims used at the certain panels and on top of this, the craftsman used their own fingers to feel for the uneven gap/height before using the file and panel beater to rectify it so you are going to spend hours trying to do the same.
If it had the front end damage, you may want to check the SAI figure once on the alignment platform.
It can't be adjusted without replacing the parts and it will tell the staus of your front end frame.
These days, I use the embedded link rather than uploading the actual image file to the server.

Ok, dropped into the paint shop today to find they had painted the panels, cut, polished and started assembly - always great to see a team of guys commited to a job, even if I can`t keep up with the camera!

The square bits on the lights I think your referring to, are the rear reverse lense or fog lense depending on what side. I'm not aware of these being able to come loose, as they are part of the complete taillight, they do appear to be separate when you look at them though, as there is what loos lie a square line to mark out each lense, but I've never seen one come loose or even forced out.
Would you by any chance have a photo?

The bodyshop chaps are very good - they work on loads of classics, mostly complete body builds and paints so this sort of thing does not phaze them - though they have never encountered a car built with so many bolts and fittings before - they are most impressed with the handywork done at the Honda factory!
I`ll ask them specifically about the headlight adjustments when I see them next - I have a feeling its just a case of starting again with the whole front fit as the lights themselves don`t seem to have much adjustment, so any minor issue with the bonnet fit or door fit shows itself further away from that point.

That was pretty much confirms my suspicion; I hoped I might be missing something with the headlight, but I'm probably not.
Since the bonnet aligns perfectly with everything else on mine, I'll persevere with the touch-up paint for now.

I can see the build up of dirt in there alright Dan!
Not sure how that came loose? Maybe someone at a some point, tried to pry it out because it looks like a separate enclosure, with the line running round it. It's not actually supposed to come out lol
Hopefully you can get it cleaned out and bonded in ok.

OK, its been a month or so - the paint is done, the car is assembled and I wimped out and had a professional Detailer do the clean & polish work - yes, I know, but the thing with fresh paint is that it has no swirl wash marks, so it can be looked after really well from the start.

Loads more pics to post, but as you can see the IOP is awesome, panel fit is as good as its ever going to get (and the lights no longer touch the bonnet on the way up!), the roof is no longer black, the horrible window tints and black lacquered lights are gone....
I think this clearly shows that IOP is the best, fastest colour and that original spec is king....

Loads more pics to post, but as you can see the IOP is awesome, panel fit is as good as its ever going to get (and the lights no longer touch the bonnet on the way up!), the roof is no longer black, the horrible window tints and black lacquered lights are gone....
I think this clearly shows that IOP is the best, fastest colour and that original spec is king....
Let's not get into a color debate, I will win lol
Real credit to you, the car looks fantastic now! I think I also prefer the roof painted on IOP cars. So what's next?

If anyone can tell me how to show the pics rather than the links then that would be good...
chuck them onto photobucket and get the link copied from there, or do it the long way using the [img] url of the pic .... this forum needs the codes to let it know a picture should be shown..

so that is the url you need... however this is a 'link' and that throws a spanner into it! so when you do the paste bit you have to 'paste as plain text'

i've put curly brackets otherwise you wouldn't see the text, just a pic! do it with the square brackets instead of the curly ones, you get

you can do this for all of you pics, editting your posts and inserting the [img] codes.. just open your pics in a new window/tab, copy the address, paste as plain text and insert the [img] bits. if you do it, then hit the 'preview post' the pics should come up, proving it works ok
photobucket and the like give you the [img] bit as a straight copy paste.

I used the guys at J&M Coachworks on the road that leads from East Grinstead to Redhill, not far from the Temple. Jamie and Mark don`t have a website but I`ll find their number and put it on. As mentioned before, they do loads of bodywork and full body restorations, so you always see some interesting stuff being worked on.

To be honest, when the roof was black I thought the wheels were too dark - but at that point it also had dark privacy glass and black lacquered lights so it was all a bit dark - with the IOM roof and getting rid of the laquer and tints it does balence the look rather well, though I was temped to track down some original wheels to colpete the stock look, I`m pleased I stuck with them. No idea what make they are as they came with the car, but they have been
Is looking good, IOP is such a pain to match with different lights etc.
I never had those wheels on it, but they look like RAVS Inovite te 37 copies.
IMHO a set of OEM blades will finish it off nicely.

Jamie and Mark have done you proud with the refresh, great panel alignment and good to see a once great NSX brought back to life with TLC!
As you've gone OEM you really should treat it to some OEM rims when you can as for me (IMO) the black is not showing this one off at its best.

Wales is a bit far for a first club outing - South East mini-meet is the plan for the moment - could NSXGB please arrange a nice dry evening for us as the car has been detailed and I`m a sucker for not yet wanting to get it dirty....
